Close encounter
By DARRYL HOLYK ocal resident, Warren Pearson, had a bit of a surprise when he went to investigate what his two dogs were barking at Friday evening. Th sitting up in ere, a tree about 20 feet north of his house was a large brown bear. The bear appeared calm, just relaxing in a comfortable sitting and sometimes laying position in the v of the tree. Local RCMP attended to try to encourage the bear to move along but even the wailing siren of a police car didnt move teddy along. Th bear was left to e climb down on its own and as the RCMP were leaving, it slowly made its way down the tree and headed off through the trees in an eastward direction. Each bear encounter can be different, but in many cases, in this area, bears are not out to attack and if the situation is handled correctly, the bear will often move along without causing any harm. Here are some tips and suggestions of how to handle a bear encounter from Manitoba Conservation. The most important thing, although you may be startled or frightened, is to remain calm in the presence of a bear. Do not approach or crowd the bear and slowly back away from the animal.
