Tree north coast comedy in-
dustry women have come to-
gether to create Funny In the
Head, an all-day comedy event
of awareness raising, de-stig-
matising and laughter focused
on mental health issues and
suicide prevention.
The event was the brain-
child of Krista Fuller, longtime
partner/manager of comedian
Greg Sullivan.
Krista approached comedian
and promoter Mandy Nolan
and comedian Ellen Briggs
about working together on a
project that brought comedi-
ans together from all around
the country to talk about men-
tal health, perform great com-
edy, and, in the process, raise
money for suicide prevention
in regional communities.
Funny in the Head is about
reframing our perception
of suicide and mental health
problems in a way that enables
us to recognise them as social
issues, not individual ones, and
as issues that we can individu-
ally become empowered to do
something about, says Krista.
Funny in the Head boasts a
full-day program on Tursday
November 15, hosted by the
Ballina RSL, kicking of with a
FITH Breakfast with a keynote
by bestselling author, blogger,
lecturer and winner of Austral-
ian of the Year Award, Cyn-
thia Morton. From 10.30am
to 4pm there is a FITH Expo
providing conversation and
information from support ser-
vices, educators and innova-
tors in the region including On
Track Community Programs,
Lifeline Northern Rivers, SCU,
BDSCSA, New Horizons, Path-
ways and more.
All proceeds from Funny
in the Head will be donated
to Lifeline Northern Rivers to
fund the delivery of their ASIST
program (Applied Suicide In-
tervention Skills Training
Program) to Indigenous com-
munities in northern NSW by
Lifeline in conjunction with Re-
kindling the Spirit and Casino
Aboriginal Medical Service.

Byron Youth Service (BYS)
says it has taken the lead to
change the binge drinking cul-
ture of the Byron Shire and
Australia with its Cringe the
Binge campaign.
Director of BYS Di Mahoney
says, Te community has had
enough of the negative impacts
of binge drinking.
We have been battling with
binge drinking here in Byron
Bay for many years and we
want our young people, our
community, parents, politi-
cians, business and community
leaders, and tourists to join us
in a national weekend of action
to Reverse Youth Binge Drink-
ing November 911.
November 911
Byron Bay is a microcosm of
all the negative impacts of binge
drinking drink driving, mul-
tiple fatalities, sexual assault,
street violence, brawls, domes-
tic violence and trauma, anxi-
eties and depression, and the
early initiation of young people
into alcohol consumption.
On the national weekend of
action we are asking all Austral-
ians to stop and think about
their use of alcohol and do-
nate via our website www.
cringethebinge.com.au what
they would normally spend
on alcohol. Te donations will
fund programs that aim to re-
verse youth binge drinking.
Byron Shire mayor Simon
Richardson said, I admire By-
ron Youth Service for taking the
lead on this important commu-
nity issue and I hope everyone
that cares about young people
being afected by binge drink-
ing and alcohol-related issues
will come and support the
launch of Cringe the Binge.
In the lead-up to the Nation-
al Weekend of Action, BYS is
releasing a series of provocative
posters that aim to get young
people thinking about the dan-
gers of binge drinking.
Te posters will be part of
the of cial launch of Cringe the
Binge on October 19 and they
focus on the issues of alcohol
and violence, sexual assault,
sexually transmitted diseases,
mental health issues and brain
development. Everyone is in-
vited to the launch on Friday
October 19 at 10am in Apex
Park, Byron Bay. Organisers
are asking everyone to wear
a black t-shirt. For more visit
www.cringethebinge.com.au.
