Name of Lesson: Modeling Multiplication

Grade Level: 3 Subject: 2nd-3rd Grade Math Workshop Prepared by: Christine Simms Overview and Purpose: This lesson will continue our exploration of the concept of multiplication. Students will be offered a variety of hands-on activities to progress through during the hour. Regardless of which activities they complete, each student will create artifacts that represent his or her developing understanding of what it means to multiply numbers. The purpose of this lesson is to develop background knowledge and create meaning for students before just memorizing facts, but leading toward that end goal for the year. California Common Core Educational Standards

Operations and Algebraic Thinking 3.1 Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each, or 7 groups of 5 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 7. Operations and Algebraic Thinking 3.7 Multiply and divide within 100. Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 5 = 40, one knows 40 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.

Objectives: Specify skills/information that will be learned

Students will compare the meanings of groups and rows as they relate to multiplication. Students will identify multiplication/repeated addition facts represented by arrays. Students will construct arrays to represent multiplication/repeated addition facts.

Materials Needed: Whiteboard, dry erase markers In-progress multiplication grids for students who did not finish them last week Paper - half inch grid paper, white construction paper Scissors Crayons Glue sticks Unifix cubes iPhone timer

Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.) iPad with Splash Math 3 installed, student profiles created, settings adjusted to lock student access to practice Multiplication Facts: Multiplication as Repeated Addition Educreation whiteboard app lesson to be shown on iPad Additional Prep related to including Jake remotely Computer with Skype installed and webcam Email grid paper .pdf for Jake to print Email blank multiplication (0-9) table for Jake to print Email link to educreations lesson Share materials list with Jakes mom Confirm that Splash Math is installed on Jakes iPad and that his mom knows how to set it up to provide practice only for the targeted chapter

Process:

Connect to Jake via Skype. Review where we left off last week working with modeling multiplication to begin filling in the times table chart. Play educreations lesson (pre-recorded using iPad app and uploaded to the educreations website http://www.educreations.com/lesson/view/modelingmultiplication/2255240/) Modeling Multiplication for the group. Complete the direct instruction piece with sample problems on the classroom whiteboard and check for understanding before moving to independent work. Review activity options for work time with samples of the new arrays project. Set up first student on Splash Math on the iPad, set timer. Monitor other students working. When timer ends, switch Splash Math to the next students profile. Continue to support students individually during independent work time, providing guided instruction as necessary to reinforce the lesson outcomes. Use oral questioning as students work to assess understanding.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

During direct teaching, use thumbs-up/thumbs-down to gather input regarding readiness to move to independent work. Oral questioning during work-time (How do you know? What would happen if... How would we solve this using addition? Explain what you did here.) Analyze visual representation presented in student-created arrays. Evaluate individual student reports generated by Splash Math

Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson There will be three activities going on during work time as described below.

iPad Splash Math: Each student will rotate through ten (timed) minutes of Splash Math 3: Multiplication Facts - Multiplication as Repeated Addition which will present them with a variety of problems beginning with the easiest level and getting harder as success is experienced. Multiplication Table: Each student will continue filling in a multiplication table (0-9) grid supported by manipulative materials and/or circles and stars (which they learned to play two weeks ago). Constructing Arrays: Each student will model ten or more multiplication facts using arrays colored on grid paper, colored with crayons, cut out, glued to construction paper, and labeled with the fact it represents. Notes This lesson plan was created for use in a once-weekly, small group, workshop format for homeschooled students. The content is presented in units of study, but does not cover the entirety of the curriculum. Workshops at Davis School for Independent Study are intended to give students an opportunity to learn in a collaborative setting, expose them to different teaching styles and materials, and engage them in the content in a way that encourages further exploration at home. This particular group of learners includes four 3rd grade boys (one who is currently in Germany and joining us via Skype) and a 1st grade girl who is working above grade-level. Because the group is so small, the ability to provide additional support as needed during work time is a tremendous advantage in terms of differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs.
