Summary Learning to Read Malcolm X (I Struggled with the MLA citation because I was unable to find details of the book from which the excerpt was taken.) - Malcolm X introduces his struggle and frustration with his literacy level and emphasizes his lack of ability to articulate his thoughts without the employment of slang terms in which he speaks. -He discusses his apparent acquisition of education to those who have listened to him or seen him on television. -Malcolm describes his lack of understanding of the majority of textual devices and explains his methods for the correction of his issue. (copying the dictionary) -Malcolm emphasizes the painstaking slow process which he endured. -Malcolm outlines his excitement and pride following the completion of the first few pages of the dictionary making note of the word aardvark as a fond memory and stepping stone in his education career. -He further applauds prisoners who have also become literate. Calling them miniature encyclopedias.

-Malcolm X most likely feels undereducated and embarrassed/oppressed to attempt to share his ideas with proper piers such as Muhammad. This makes his self education a motive. -This displays Malcolm's pride in his work to self educate through personal acknowledgment of his seamless oration skills. -Malcolm holds pity on himself for the ways of his past as he was unable to understand the main ideas of many novels and educated papers which he attempted to read. -This emphasis makes his struggle appear even more revolutionary and impossible for any man to overcome. -These techniques reveal Malcolm's sensitivity towards his entry into proper literacy and also clarifies his childlike motives into a condensed list of tasks.
