August 17, 2012 Dear Very Clearly Unique Professor Campbell (I mean this as a compliment), My name is Hannah Luke and to state the obvious, I am an incoming freshman at UNCC. Before you ask, yes I have heard about a thousand Luke, I am your father jokes in the past eighteen years. Im used to it by now. I am from Indian Trail, NC, a whopping thirty minutes from campus. However, despite the close proximity to school, I am living on campus this year. My dad is a UNC Charlotte alumnus and did the whole commuter thing for four years. In his words, you NEED to live on campus to get the college experience. So as of tomorrow morning I will be a new Charlotte resident, leaving my parents to either miss me, or party that Im finally out of the house (at least for most of the year). Im kidding of course about my parents being relieved that I am leaving. I think. My family is everything to me so this is a completely new experience for us. I am their oldest kid and their only daughter, so of course my dad is panicking. He would probably be envious of you for having three sons. I have a younger brother named John, and at the age of 15 he has surpassed me in height (and no I am not short. I stand at a respectable 5 foot 8) and makes sure I am aware of that fact every chance he gets. Dont tell him I wrote this, but I am going to miss the not so little dork. My mom works as a nurse at CMC-Waxhaw and my dad is the Operations Captain for the Union County Sheriffs Office. My parents are my best friends and Im not afraid to admit it, but I cant wait to start college and have that time away from home. You mentioned you have two dogs, Butt-Ugly 1 and 2. I have three miniature pinschers: Ollie, Bella, and Tulip. Do not be fooled by their small, seemingly cute appearance. They are vicious creatures that have attacked the cable man, several friends, and an armed police officer. Now they are perfect angels in the presence of my family, but bring a stranger in the house and the horns come out from behind those adorable floppy ears. Personally, I am a cat lover. Neville and Ginny, named after the Harry Potter characters of course, are the two members of my family I will probably miss the most. I question whether one day when Im old if I will end up being that crazy cat lady with like ten felines. Thats decades away though so I think I am safe for now. As for my major, I am a criminal justice student. The phrase, the apple doesnt fall far from the tree is definitely applicable to my dad and I. He is my role model. If I can ever be half the police officer he is I will consider myself a success. I spent this past summer volunteering with the Sheriffs Office in the detective bureau and with the crime scene investigators. They taught me a lot about law enforcement. How many eighteen year olds can honestly say they have ridden in a police car minus the handcuffs? I also was able to go visit the SBI Crime Lab which was, well, AWESOME! I even learned to classify fingerprint patterns to the point that I am sure I will be

haunted by images of whorls, loops, and arches for the rest of my life. I am passionate about my major and my future career to say the least. In my free time I enjoy being active. I love running, bike riding, going to the gym, or anything else that gets me moving. I always have to have something to keep me occupied. Being sedentary is not a part of my personality. I am also kind of a nerd. I honestly love school. English is actually my favorite subject and I promise I am not saying that to suck up. I have always loved reading and learned that I like to write when I took my first AP English class my junior year of high school. Im also opinionated and not afraid to put up a good debate if needed. Add in a dash of competitiveness and lets just say I have a pretty good record when it comes to arguments. Im excited to be a student in your class this semester. Im sure it will be an adventure for sure based on the emails you have sent out. See you in a few days! Sincerely, Hannah Luke
