Investigators believe a 64-year-old Ypsilanti Township man found dead Thanksgiving morning near train tracks north of Forest Avenue was killed accidentally while he was walking alongside a train. He has been identified as Tom McGuire, according to the Ypsilanti Police Department. Detective Sgt. Thomas Eberts said McGuire was last seen leaving his home at about 10 p.m. Nov. 21. He was known to like walking along the tracks, he said. Railroad employees found McGuires body at about 9:25 a.m. Nov. 22 about 100 yards north of Forest Avenue near North Huron Street, according to Ypsilanti police. The body was reported to police and officers responded to the scene to investigate. Eberts said there were initial difficulties identifying the body. McGuires family has since been notified after positive identification, he said. Investigators determined the man had been struck by a passing train and he succumbed to his injuries, according to police. Two different trains went on the tracks in the area that night, Eberts said, but police are not sure which train hit McGuire. He said police are still investigating. Ypsilanti, were here to funk you. Politically-charged hiphip collective The Coup indeed funked Woodruff s in a benefit show for at-risk and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth Sunday night. The benefit, which raised approximately $1,000, was organized by the Washtenaw Eviction and Foreclosure Defense as a celebration for the com-

munity and a way to raise money for the Ozone House. The Washtenaw Eviction and Foreclosure Defense is a volunteer organization that advocates for families on the brink of losing their homes due to bank foreclosure. Ozone House provides support for at-risk and disenfranchised youth with housing and resources. The event came about after WEFD and other community members came together at recent teach-ins and discussed what sort of things the group could do to

celebrate their work. Johnny Lupinacci, a local activist involved with the organization of the event, said being able to celebrate what was being done in the community was as important as the work itself. What can we do to just celebrate, celebrate the beautiful struggle, he said. When co-organizer Jeff Clark noticed a hole in The Coups tour a day off between playing Grand Rapids and Cleveland, Ohio he pitched the

idea of a benefit show to the band, and they were up for it. It was a total fluke. Im a long-time fan of The Coup and from the same town as them, Clark said in a previous interview with the Courier. I wrote to their booking agent and explained what we wanted to do and they showed some interest. WEFD started a Kickstarter to pay for The Coup and their supportPLEASE SEE THE COUP/3-A

The Ypsilanti-Willow Run Board of Education is searching for a superintendent of the new district. Its critical to get the right fit, the right person, said Richard Dunham, director of superintendent search services for the Michigan Association of School Boards, who gave a presentation to the board at its meeting on Dec. 3. We try and find the closest

match to what our board and community are looking for in the next superintendent, he said. Dunham said MASB would conduct a rigorous search for $10,000, plus expenses. The search would span 11 to 13 weeks and would include candidates from other states. Some board members have expressed a sense of urgency around this issue, David Bates, board president, said. We may not be able to allow a window of 11 to

13 weeks. Dunham said MASB can adjust the timeline but cautioned the board not to sacrifice quality for expediency. Ypsilanti Superintendent Dedrick Martin said MASB is one of two groups bidding for the job to conduct a superintendent search for the new district. The other group is Michigan Leadership Institute, but they were unable to make the meeting on Dec. 3. One point that came up several

times during the board meeting was that the superintendents from both school districts, Martin and Laura Lisiscki of Willow Run School District, are viable candidates for superintendent of the new district. Dunham advised the board to weigh that option seriously. If you have a strong internal candidate supported by the board, the community and the staff, dont waste your time with a search, he
