discussions, the Saline City Council needs one more work session to find a consensus on next years budget and beyond. The council and city staff have been crunching numbers and finding ways to reduce expenses and increase revenue. While a shell of a plan is in place, council has yet to find a number it can go forward on together. The city budget is still shaken with the states economic downturn and its effect on property values. The city has lost $1 million from its operations budget in the past six years and the future is not too bright, even as it appears the states economy is growing again. One of the drains on the operating funds is fire protection, which has been taken out of the general fund and will again in 201213. The city has the option to make fire protection a special assessment and council is seriously considering that option for 2013-14. That would free up $322,000 for operations. The city will be taking out a $950,000 loan to pay for a new roof on the Department of Public Works building and storm

Five semifinalists, including the current interim police chief, will interview for the vacant post next week. The announcement of the semifinalists came Friday from Saline City Manager Todd Campbell. The interviews will be with the hir-

ing committee and will not be open to the public. The five, with Interim Police Chief Mike Lindman in the mix, represent a wide range of high-level experience. The candidates are Retired Deputy and Interim Police Chief Gregg A. Brighton, Dearborn; Retired Police Chief Larry R. Hrinik, Davison Township; Deputy Police Chief Robert J. Raymond Edward Jewell, a 50-year-old Saline man, will be sentenced Thursday for stalking his ex-girlfriend. He appeared for a preliminary examination 8:30 a.m. May 8 in 14A District Court on a felony charge of aggravated stalking a misdemeanor charge of stalking, according to the court. He pleaded down the felony charge and will be sen-
