Do you have access to your most vital network information? For a lot of network managers, the answer is no. Many network managers responsible for small networks, or regional segments of large networks, dont have access to the basic alarm information they need to manage their remote sites. If thats your situation, you definitely need to read the rest of this white paper, to see how you can cost-effectively get control over the information you need to see. Whats standing between you and effective network management? Most network monitoring applications are built around the concept of a large centralized NOC for a major network. This sets huge barriers between the people who actually keep the network running and the information they need to get their jobs done. For small companies, the barrier is cost. A centralized NOC thats manned 24/7 is simply out of the question for an independent telco with a small staff. A small company that cant afford a network alarm monitoring system often will simply do without alarm monitoring entirely. Obviously, not buying an alarm monitoring system saves an initial investment but thats just choosing to be nicked-and-dimed to death instead. Large companies can afford a central NOC but that doesnt mean that the people responsible for maintaining the network actually see all the information they need to see. With centralized alarm monitoring, you dont control your alarm information, the NOC does even when the alarms are from equipment in your office. A central NOC cant give you real-time information about changing conditions. You probably dont have an accurate, up-to-date picture of whats going on at the sites youre directly responsible for. Whats so wrong about a centralized NOC? Nothing, except that a centralized NOC is not a tool for corporate-level tracking of network conditions. Its not a tool for quickly delivering real-time information to maintenance personnel. If youre completely dependent on a centralized NOC, you have to wait to be notified of new events. You cant access the alarm system for a quick glance to make sure there are no problems happening at that moment. You cant see a history log of past alarms to identify weak spots and anticipate future problems.

Learn Monitoring the Easy Way: Attend DPS Telecom Factory Training
DPS Factory Training is a big help in not feeling intimidated by your network monitoring system. Its excellent presented in the right way and tailored to the needs of the class.

Real-time notification of alarm conditions is an essential capability for effective network alarm monitoring. If your remote site is threatened by a condition that can cause a network outage AC power failure, high temperature, equipment breakdown, etc. every second counts. Knowing about problems as they occur can dramatically reduce service restoration time and maintenance costs. If you had your own network alarm monitoring system, controlled by your department, you can have real-time monitoring and alarm analysis capabilities. These capabilities are essential if you want to be proactive, instead of reactive, with your network alarms. OK, maybe I dont have all the alarms I would want to have. Whats the worst that can happen? Poor network monitoring costs both time and money. A lot of remote site problems, if theyre allowed to go uncorrected for even a short time, can cause permanent equipment damage. Letting a site go dark because of a power outage, for example, can destroy switch cards and batteries, and the replacement costs can run into thousands of dollars. Whats worse, slow response to remote site alarms can escalate simple problems into network outages. If a situation is boiling away that can affect customer service, wouldnt you rather know about it quickly than have to wait on the NOC? How do I know if I really need better visibility of my local/regional alarms? Heres some typical warning signs that you dont have sufficient local visibility of your alarms: Have you had a preventable network outage in the past 18 months? Have you not received an alarm notification until after the problem had caused a network outage and/or equipment damage? Have the alarm notifications youve received from the NOC been sketchy and incomplete, forcing you to travel to the remote site to check the problem out? Do you have to call the NOC to find out if there are any problems in your area? Have there been equipment and/or environmental problems in your own office or a nearby site that you did not know about until you were notified by the NOC? If youve ever had any of these problems, its time you took control of your alarms through a local/regional alarm monitoring solution.

T/Mon SLIM features dual power inputs, LAN based alarm collection and alarm forwarding, plus serial polling of legacy remotes.

to five users can simultaneously connect to T/Mon SLIM using its built-in Web Browser Interface or T/Windows. T/Mon SLIM is primarily built for modern, LAN-based network environments. The units 10/100 BaseT Ethernet port provides a LAN connection for receiving alarm reports from devices; forwarding alarms to T/Mon NOC or an SNMP manager; and download T/MonXM software updates. Four RS-232 ports provide legacy polling of serial devices. All the capabilities you need to proactively monitor your local/regional network Despite its compact form, T/Mon SLIM has everything you need to effectively monitor your sites: Consolidation of all alarms in your local/regional network to one screen You dont want to have to watch several different screens to get a full picture of whats going on in your part of the network. T/Mon SLIM presents everything on one screen, so you can tell at one glance if you have a problem. To produce this integrated display, T/Mon SLIM accepts alarm inputs from many different devices in many different protocols. Support for T/Mon software modules You can order your T/Mon SLIM with exactly the capabilities that are right for you, custom fitted to your networks exact needs. SNMP trap processing This optional T/Mon software module enables your T/Mon SLIM to receive traps from SNMP devices, so you dont have to maintain a separate SNMP manager to view SNMP alarms. The added advantage is that SNMP traps are processed with the full power of T/Mon, instead of the bare-bones alarm presentation of the typical SNMP manager. ASCII alarm processing You dont ever have to settle for meaningless major-minor summary alarms if your T/Mon SLIM is equipped with this optional software module. Nearly all telecom equipment outputs highly detailed status reports in the form of raw ASCII text. The ASCII alarm processor parses the ASCII stream and extracts alarm messages, which it converts to real-time T/Mon notifications.

Support for legacy remotes T/Mon SLIM supports several different software modules for polling legacy RTUs from many different manufacturers, including Badger, Dantel, Larse, Pulsecom and NEC. You can have a new, fully capable advanced monitoring system and still keep your legacy remotes. Automated 24/7 pager and email alarm notification Who needs a 24-hour manned NOC when simple, cost-effective machinery can do the job for you? T/Mon SLIMs round-the-clock paging takes alarms directly to techs in the field. Email notification sends alarms to any email-capable cell phone, and creates an automatic record of alarms. T/Mon SLIMs automatic alarm escalation ensures alarms arent left unnoticed; if the on-call tech doesnt acknowledge an alarm, T/Mon SLIM will first page the tech again if theres still no response, T/Mon SLIM will page a supervisor. Web browser interface You should always be able to access your alarm information from any location. T/Mon SLIMs Web Browser Interface lets you securely connect to your alarm system from any computer. Remote web access lets on-call technicians connect to the system to acknowledge alarms and drill down on alarms for more information. A web interface also lets you connect to your alarm system without extra software or another interface to learn. Custom alarms based on multiple inputs Lots of network events are not critical in themselves, but they can represent big problems when they happen together. For example, a low battery isnt a big deal; neither is a generator failure. But when the two events happen together, its a little bit more serious. And when an AC power failure happens at a critical site, and the battery is low and the generator cant recharge, you have a serious problem. T/Mon SLIMs customizable Derived Alarms can track all that for you and send you an escalating series of pages as the problem gets worse. Automatic alarm correction based on alarm inputs Since T/Mon SLIM can track multiple alarm inputs, it can also use those inputs to trigger automatic corrective actions turning on lights and locking doors in response to intrusion alarms, turning off equipment before it goes into damaging thermal or low power shutdown or paging you and the fire department in response to a high temperature alarms. This gives you a tireless first line of defense thats more reliable than any human. Alarm forwarding and filtering T/Mon SLIM provides regional alarm monitoring thats compatible with your companys overall network management. T/Mon SLIM can forward alarms to a central T/Mon NOC or a central SNMP manager. Alarm forwarding enables your T/Mon SLIM to act as a network node that collects alarms from your sites and for8

T/Mon SLIM Automatically Troubleshoots and Corrects Alarms

The same alarm can instantly go from minor to critical if something else goes wrong. For example, a low battery might not be a big deal until AC power and the backup generator both fail, and then its an emergency. T/Mon SLIMs Derived Alarms feature gives you the power to instantly track these kinds of changing alarm conditions. Derived Alarms combine inputs from multiple alarm points into a single, software-configured alarm, using simple Boolean logic. Lets say your low battery is a minor alarm. Low battery AND an AC power failure OR generator failure is a major. Low battery AND AC power failure AND generator failure is a critical alarm. Derived Alarms can also include date/time factors, so theyre great for filtering nuisance alarms. You dont have to be pestered by an alarm every time a door is opened in a busy facility during business hours but you will be notified if the door is opened by an intruder at night. Correct Alarms Instantly With No Human Intervention T/Mon SLIMs Derived Controls are even more useful, correcting problems before any human operator even knows something is wrong. If critical network equipment fails, T/Mon SLIM can automatically start backup equipment and notify a service tech. If a security door is breached after-hours, T/Mon SLIM can automatically lock security gates, turn on lights, and page security staff.

DPS Telecoms Sales Department: Monitoring Consultants Who Put You First
Were not your typical sales department, says Rick Dodd, DPS Telecoms Director of Sales. We dont rush the client. We dont recommend solutions until we have a good understanding of the clients requirements and ultimate goal. Were design consultants. What makes Dodd and his sales staff different is their sincere, no-nonsense commitment to putting their clients first. Dodds primary goal is making sure you have the right solution to meet your needs and if that means a smaller sale, thats OK with Dodd. A lot of the time we propose solutions that have a smaller sales volume, if its the right solution for the client, said Dodd.
Rick Dodd DPS Telecom Director of Sales

That goes back to the DPS philosophy of creating complete client satisfaction. We customize our solutions to make it the right fit without the client having to buy a lot of extraneous hardware and software. The bottom line is, if youre not 100% happy with the solution weve provided, weve done something wrong. My personal promise is that when you order from DPS, youll get the exact solution youre looking for, or youll get your money back, said Dodd. The DPS Telecom sales process is a systematic guarantee of Dodds promise. With every client, Dodd and his sales staff follow a standard procedure thats designed to safeguard the clients best interests at every step.

Step 1: Consultation
When he first talks to a client, Dodds only immediate goal is to determine the clients real needs, both for the present and the future. First we look the challenges youre facing right now. What are you currently working with, and why isnt it working for you? What are your current solutions shortcomings and pitfalls? We have an extensive site survey we work from to understand your network what equipment do you monitor, what alarm equipment do you currently have, what protocols and interfaces do you use, said Dodd. But we also look at where you want to be in the future, five or ten years down the road. We want to find out what a perfect long-term system for you would look like. We dont want to provide you with something youll have to re-do two years from now.

Step 2: Design
The next step is to design an alarm monitoring application that will serve as a bridge between the clients current state and future objective. The goal here, Dodd said, is to create a perfect fit solution. A perfect fit solution is different for everybodys application. It might mean visibility of network systems you havent been able to monitor before. It might mean consolidating visibility of your whole network to one console. The key is creating a solution thats simpler for you to manage, from your operational standpoint, said Dodd. In most cases, the clients needs can be served with an existing DPS product. But if current products dont provide that perfect fit solution, Dodd will work with the DPS Engineering Department to develop a custom solution that meets the clients exact requirements. From a design aspect, perfect fit means we match our existing products against your requirements. A lot of times, an offthe-shelf solution will meet your needs. But if it doesnt, we modify our hardware and software so it fits your needs exactly. Our hardware is modular and the intelligence is built into the software, so we can tweak it pretty easily until its the absolute best fit for you, Dodd said.

Step 3: Web Demonstration

When a preliminary design has been created, Dodd contacts the client for a Web demonstration. Using a shared browser connection and a conference call, Dodd explains the basics of the application and familiarizes the client with the technical features of the equipment that will be used. The Web demo is a convenient, no-pressure way for the client to get a very personalized demonstration of the proposed alarm monitoring solution, covering both the broad application and the fine technical details.

Step 4: Quote
If the client approves the initial presentation, Dodds staff prepares an in-depth written Sales quotes to clients are illustrated with detailed technical drawings. quote that details the clients existing situation, how the proposed solution will improve that situation, and the technical functionality of the equipment. First we reiterate our understanding of your as-is situation, and we explain how where going to take you from where you are right now to your desired end results. Then we get into the nuts-and-bolts aspect of how its going to work in your network, said Dodd. We also provide extensive application drawings with the quote. We spend a lot of time creating the drawings, because they really help you connect the dots and see what were proposing. The quote also includes a price page that breaks down the cost on a line-by-line basis, and a list of referrals to existing DPS clients. These are companies in your industry, sometimes even in your geographical area, that use similar equipment to what you have now and similar equipment to what were proposing. We want you to see youre not buying something thats untested or unproven.

Step 5: Installation, Training and Support

Dodd emphasized that DPS clients arent on their own after they purchase. DPS Telecom continues to support the client with installation services, training and 24/7 tech support. Our installers are subject-matter experts in the product theyre installing in fact, theyre the same guys who teach classes at DPS Factory Training Events. For a full-system install, your installer will make sure everything is working right and hell train you and your staff on the system, said Dodd. We provide training with installation so that you have full control over your own alarm monitoring system and your own destiny. We want you to be as self-sufficient as possible but we also provide a high level of support. For the lifetime of your DPS alarm monitoring solution, youre entitled to 24/7 technical support.

Step 6: Evaluation, Backed by a Money-Back Guarantee

Every alarm monitoring solution from DPS Telecom, including custom-engineered solutions, is backed by a 30-day, norisk, money-back guarantee. Clients love this, because it basically removes all risk from buying our equipment. And thats only right. If youre going to commit a portion of your budget, you should be sure the product delivers a huge amount of value, said Dodd. We guarantee that your alarm monitoring solution will work as promised, and if it doesnt, youre not on the hook for anything. After your system is installed, you can try it for 30 days, and if youre not happy for any reason, you can send it back and youre not on the hook for the equipment, for the training, for the shipping, for anything. Its just 100% money back.
