UNIT 5. MORE ABOUT SENTENCES THAT MAKE SENSETEACHERS NOTES


A sentence must have all the words it needs to make sense. Look at these groups of words. Each group has one or two words missing. The groups of words do not make sense. They are not sentences. Daddy gave Mummy lovely ring. Polar bears fish seals. Kumar standing the road. She likes wear long skirts. Tigers and lions sharp teeth claws. Apples and oranges fruits. I can see few rocks the beach. Sheep woolly coats. Kitten sleeping on bed. I climbing stairs. The opposite left right. Mr. Brown author of the book. They playing hockey school field. We travelled the village bus.

Now look at these groups of words. There are no missing words in any group. The groups of words are all sentences. Sheep have woolly coats. The kitten was sleeping on the bed. I am climbing the stairs. They are playing hockey on the school field. Mr. Brown is the author of the book. The opposite of left is right. We travelled to the village by bus. Daddy gave Mummy a lovely ring. Tigers and lions have sharp teeth and claws. She likes to wear long skirts. Polar bears eat fish and seals. Apples and oranges are fruits. Kumar is standing on the road. I can see a few rocks on th beach.

Always check your sentences when you have written them. Make sure they have all the words they need to make sense. Also make sure there are no extra words. Read these sentences. They have all the words they need and they make sense. These houses have large windows. The girls hair is very long. The eagle has sharp eyes. The monkeys are noisy.

there is a word that should not be there. Begin the sentence with a capital letter, and end it with a full stop or question mark.
