Dear Student,

You are required to do one assibment for the Foundation Course in English-02. It is a Tutor Marked Assigllrnent (TMA) and carries 100 marks: It covers four blocks of the course.

Aims: The TMA is primarily concerned with assessing your writing and study skills. You should not reproduce chunks of information from the units but effectively use the skills that you may have acquired during the course of study to compose your answers. These assignments aim to teach as well as to assess your pefformance.

Guidelines: You will be required to write a paragraph, an essay, reports, make notes and summarize.
As in day-to-day life, planning is important in attempting the assignment as well. Read the assignment carefully; go through the units on which the,questions are based; jot down some points regarding each question and then re-arrange them in a logical order. Pay attention to your introduction and conclusion. The introduction must tell you how to interpret the given topic and how you propose to develop it. The conclusion must summarize your views on the topic. The growth and development of the l~uman child iiivolves two parallel processes. One is physiological growth. This is supported by nutrition and exercise and protection from physical harm. The second is the psychological growth of the individual. This is an important aspect of social development; the process whereby the infant gradually becomes an independent ancl active member of hislher comtnunity. A member of human society is an individual who is able to interact and commuriicate effectively with others. This is made possible by h e use of language. Thus one major requirement that must be met as the child grows is the learning of the first language. A inember of society is also a person - an individual wit11 upique characteristics that make up hisfher personality. Among these characteristics are personality traits, interests, abilities and talents. We often refer to a small baby as 5t' even when we know whether it is a boy or a girl. This is because we have not yet begun to see this child as n person.

One very obvious reason fbr this is that human beings usually live together in Piinilies and widcr communities. But this is not always true. In the folklore of most corninunities there are important characters wbo are wanderers and hermits. These arc individuals who do not claiin to belong to a particular community. And we find such people in modern societies too. The more important and interesting aspect'oi' man's social nature is related to how it is folmed. An individual's persorlality and behaviour are detc~rninedby the culture in which his early socializ,ation took is place. The humdn infar~t born with the potential for developing in a number of ways. The culture into which s k c is boin functions as an envirorinlexlt which provides the opportunity and support for learning various things associated with being a person and meinber of society, At the same tirne it restricts what is learnt by the child. The language the child is exposed to in the home and neighbourhood becomes the first language and the culture of hat particular community is what the child learns and accepts as his own. The language and culture of the community in which socialization takes place, influence the social nature and identity of the individual in important ways. A child has very little choice in these matters. It is only after we have become socialized and learnt how to live in society that we can begin to rebel or become reformers.

A remakable feature of the process of learning the first lanpages is that it occurs quite naturally and is managed with effectiveness. This strikes us as anlazing

when we n ~ t that this learning of a language takes place 'without any conscious e planning and effort. Various persons around the child help and support this, first language acquisition process, but there is no systematic"teaching. We can 'state another principle now. Every child leans to speak hisher first languages effectively, without planned teaching. Of course after the child goes to school, a great deal more learning takes place under instruction, especially reading and writing. But this curriculum-based teaching is based on what was lea~nt earlier through the natural ,processof socialization.
