that is suited to his/her current ability:
• Read the book to the child with proper expression.
• Help the child read by reading alternately or together.
• Listen to the child read and offer help only when he/she
encounters difficult words.

BEFORE READING – Spark the child’s interest in reading.

Talk about the cover of the book
• What/Who do you see in the picture?
• What do you think is happening in the picture?
• Based on your answers, what coud the story be about?
Read the tite and the names of the author and illustrator.

DURING READING – Deepen the child’s interest in reading.

Ask one or a combination of the following once in a while:
• Is your prediction correct?
• What do you think will happen next?
• Are there any words you cannot read or understand?

AFTER READING – Enrich the child’s interest and competency

in reading.
Review the story with the child using the following guide ques-
tions:
• Who are the characters in the story?
• Where does the story take place?
• What happens first?
• What happens next?
• What happens last?
• What is the problem in the story?
• How is the problem resolved?
Help the child make real-life connections to the story.
Talk about or have him/her write or draw the following:
• Who is your favorite character and why?
• What is your favorite part of the story and why?
• If you were the character, what would you do and why?
• If you could add to the story, what would you add?
• If you could change the ending of the story, who would it end?
Develop your child’s reading skills:
List down words the child has difficulty reading and have him/
her practice reading them every day.
