CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

In the Philippines, English is highly valued not because it is functional and

practical, but more importantly, the better one's ability to understand and use it, the better

one's chances of career development. English is always been one of the official languages

of the Philippines. It is the language of commerce and law, as well as the primary

medium of instruction in education. The English language is well entrenched in

Philippine formal education (Regala, 2017).

Through the years, the evolution of English language has become dominant and
became our international language. It enables second language learners to communicate
directly with native English speakers. Blake (1998), observed that “technology can play
an important role in fostering second language acquisition by electronically increasing
learners’ contact with a wide array of authentic materials” (p. 210).

Movies or also known as films are a type of visual communication which use as

moving pictures and sound to tell stories or inform or help people to learn. People in
every part of the world watch movies as a type of entertainment, a way to have fun. Fun
for some people can mean laughing while for others it can mean crying or feeling afraid.
Most movies are made so that they can be shown on big screens at cinemas or  movie
theatres. After movies are shown on movie screens for a period of time (ranging from a
few weeks to several months), movies are shown on pay television or cable television and
sold or rented on DVD disks or videocassette tapes- so that people can watch the movies
at home. Later movies are shown on television stations.

Student’s nowadays are experiencing difficulty in learning and speaking English,

which is why this research aims to determine how students at the Universal Colleges of
Paranaque are getting benefit from watching English Movies in order to support their
learning process.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers formulated questions to further explain this study. The questions are

as follow:

1. How will English Movies help Senior High School Students in terms of

Language Acquisition, Visual Communication and Audiovisual

Communication?

2.

3. How can the English Movies increase the English Proficiency of the

Students?

Significance of the Study

To the students

This study will increase the authenticity of the learning process and help in decreasing
students’ learning anxiety. Through English movies, the English Proficiency of a Student
effectively improve skills including speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary, and writing. Hence,
increase the confidence of a student whenever they speak or write in relation to English
language.

To the teachers

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 5

This study will help English teachers educate students through the use of English movies
to develop learners speaking and listening skills. The study will give ideas and basis for their
teaching. The teacher may know the advantages of using watching English movies in improving
English Proficiency of the Students.

Hypothesis

Scope and Limitations

The main concern of this study is how does English movies affect the English
Proficiency of the Students. The study is limited within the bound of Senior High School
students of Universal College of Parañaque who are watching English Movies. This study
focuses on the fifty (50) Senior High School students school year 2019-2020. The 50% of
grade 11 students and 50% of the grade 12 students will be used in this research. This
study will not cover other related movies. The other students which do not fall as part of
the grade 11 and grade 12 students are not within the scope of the research.

Definition of Terms

The following definitions are provided to ensure uniformity and understanding of

these terms throughout the study:

Communication- the imparting or exchanging of information or news.

-the imparting or exchanging of information or news.

Language - the method of human communication, either spoken or written,

consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way.

English Language
Proficiency

Students are exposed to abundant English Movies and their language

acquisition takes place when comprehensible input is sufficiently delivered. Full visual

context, such as subtitles/captions have beneficial effects on English Language learning

due to rich and authentic comprehensible input. Captioned English Movies demonstrating

words in auditory and visual form are beneficial. English movies with subtitles have their

unique advantages that can lead to the improvement of Students vocabulary output.

(Chung, Goldman, 1996).

Indeed, visual communication is the transmission of information and ideas

using symbols and imagery. Besides, visual communication in English movies is believed

that people can depend on its signs, graphic sigs, films and typography in subtitles. One

of the most benefits that offer visual communication across its approach to English

Language is that students develop their reading speed. The following benefits in watching

English Movies are word recognition and help students in visualizing things in learning

new language. With the use of subtitles, students broaden their knowledge with a new set

of conversational phrases coming from the English movie itself. Thus, students who

watch foreign films with subtitles can speed up their learning process and boost their

adaptation to the English Language (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and

James McQueen).

Through this, Students can promote their comprehensive application abilities of listening,

speaking, reading, writing and translation.

Banks today are the largest financial institutions around the world, with branches

and subsidiaries throughout everyone’s life. However, savings banks are facing risks

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 10

when they are operating. Credit risk is one of the most significant risks that banks face,

considering that granting credit is one of the main sources of income in savings banks.

Therefore, the management of the risk related to that credit affects the profitability of the

banks.

Saving Bank

Savings bank, is financial institution that gathers savings, paying interest or

dividends to savers. It channels the savings of individuals who wish to consume less than

their incomes to borrowers who wish to spend more (Morella, 2018).

Bank Credit

Lorena (2015) posits that bank credit is the aggregate amount of credit available

to a person or business from a banking institution. It is the total amount of funds financial

institutions provide to an individual or business. A business or individual's bank credit

depends on the borrower's ability to repay and the total amount of credit available in the

banking institution.

Synthesis

This should be the summary of all the gathered RRLs. This part should also give

the insights of the researchers towards this research and give the difference of this

research from the mentioned RRLs.

Research Methodology

Research Design

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 12

This research is a non-experimental research under the quantitative research. This

research will use comparative descriptive design in determining the difference between

the two financial institutions. It will further discuss the contrast between the two. These

two are the savings bank and cooperatives.

Population and Sampling

The population for the research is 57. Using the Sloven’s Formula, with the margin of

error of 5%, the researchers will have a sample size of 50. Due to this big number of

population, the researcher opts to choose judgmental sampling, under non-probability

sampling, of the population and get samples from who the researcher thinks to have a

concrete knowledge and proper experience for this research. The researchers will

cooperate with savers, and members of lending clubs.

These financial institutions will be studied so as to have a greater idea of the

difference between the two, when it comes to convenience of service, safety, security and

gain of investment. Also, it would be able to give future researchers and the readers the

idea of where the best place is to invest one’s money. The technique the researchers will

use would be able to give results that will generalize the results needed for this research.

Research Locale

This study will be held in financial institutions, cooperatives, situated in South Metro

Manila. At the same time, it shall be situated in our school for bank savers. These places

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 13

were selected to ensure the efficiency of the results to be obtained from savers and

investors around the said area.

Research Instrument and Techniques

This research will use the 4-point-scale questionnaire. It is used for clear and

distinction of qualities, experiences or respondents opinion. For the validity of the

questionnaire, the researchers consulted the experts in this field, the Universal College of

Parañaque researcher’s team to check and approve the validity and reliability of the

prepared questionnaire. The four-point-scale questionnaires, on the other hand, have the

numerical choices with the ratings: 1 as Strongly Disagree, 2 as Disagree, 3 as Agree and

4 as Strongly Agree. Also the range of this shall be:

RATING RANGE ADJECTIVAL RATING

1 1.00 – 1.75 Strongly Disagree
2 1.76 – 2.50 Disagree
3 2.51 – 3.25 Agree
4 3.26 – 4.00 Strongly Agree

These questionnaires have received a Cronbach alpha of 0.746, making it reliable

for this research.

Data Gathering Procedure

The sources of data for a research are grouped into two, namely: primary sources

and secondary sources. But for this research the primary data shall be generated by means

of survey. The survey shall be divided into two sections; the first section shall collect the

background of the respondents when it comes to these financial institutions. Meanwhile,

the second section shall focus on the subject matter of the study. The question will be

UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 14

given through the research instrument and shall be self-administered and a total of 50

respondents. The research instrument is the validated questionnaire to be given out by the

researchers.

Data Analysis

For the data analysis, the researchers will use inferential statistics. It is used to

extend beyond the immediate alone. The researchers used inferential statistics to make

judgments of the probability that an observed difference between groups is a dependable

one or one that might have happened by chance in this study. To make the data more

specified, the researchers will use the following:

1. Frequency – is the number of times a data value occurs.

2. Percentage – is a measure of a portion in relation to a whole. It is defined as a number

represented as a fraction of 100. It used to express numbers between zero and one. It is

denoted by the symbol %.

The Percentage Formula is given as,

Percentage = (Value/Total Value) * 100

3. Arithmetic Mean – is the sum of all the numbers in a list divided by the number in a

list divided by the numbers of items in the list.
