Students’ Perception on English Movie Improving English Skills

Introduction

The habit of watching English films using English subtitles can encourage students to have
good English speaking skills because speaking requires mastery of vocabulary mastery and the
arrangement of words, phrases, sentences as well as the meaning conveyed. This research aims
to determine the relationship between the habit of watching English films using English subtitles
and speaking skills. This research was conducted in college students in Makassar, not only from
English Education, but also from other major as well. The research method was quantitative by
taking a sample to collect 41 students. The data taken were in the form of speaking ability tests
and questionnaires on the students' habits of watching English films using English subtitles. The
independent variable is the habit of watching English films. The results of the study obtained
speaking ability which is influenced by the habit of watching movies. There is a positive
relationship between the habit of watching English films with English movie and English ability.
The level of the correlation coefficient will also be discussed in order to discover the level of
habit of watching English films, and the correlation to the ability to speak English.

Using film as a medium for learning English provides a background behind the information
that activates prior knowledge in students who are very important in stimulating Herron and
Hanley's four language skills in Canning (Canning-Wilson, n.d.) The activity of watching movies
provides entertainment and make students interested and enjoy learning English. Movies usually
display audio and visuals with text that can help students understand new meanings and spellings
of words so that they are expected through watching activities films can enrich vocabulary and
improve English language skills students, especially the ability to speak (speaking). To support
good English language skills, the lecturer asks students hone their English speaking skills by
getting used to watch English films using English subtitles. Movies can become one of the media
or means of learning. Watching movies is an activity that can be done by anyone from children,
teenagers, to adults mature. Movies have become a special hobby for people who like to watch
film. However, what needs to be underlined is the delivery of the storyline in the film that can be
used as learning to speak / speaking is an English-language film that using English subtitles. By
using English subtitles, it is hoped that students can find out the meaning of terms, vocabulary,
idioms heard and read through running text. By viewing English-language films using English
subtitles, students can practice listening concentration. Various English vocabulary by using a
British or American accent can be heard. Various phrases/idioms, phrases conveyed by actors
and actresses in the film will be a learning material for students. Students can imitate existing
speech in English films and can enrich vocabulary. However, English-language films using
English subtitles can add understanding in English language skills. Various vocabulary heard
students are then processed to become sentences, phrases, idioms / expressions, students can
pronounce and have meaning. What students say can be understood by others, so that the
communication process occurs. According to Jeihan (2019: 174) good vocabulary mastery can
support one's English language skills. Vocabulary becomes one of the supports in the element or
speaking element. If someone who wants to speak a foreign language, for example, English,
understand the meaning of the vocabulary, then the person will easily speak use English.
Mulyadi (2015:143) British films have educational moral values that motivate and cool
especially in the ability to hear native speech. When students watch western movies, they
practice hearing the words spoken then they catch the meaning and meaning, good vocabulary
understanding make students have good English speaking skills as well. According to Dewi
(2019: 963) film is an audio-visual media that has beautiful sound effects and pictures. The
sound and picture effects make students are interested to see who then memorizes the vocabulary
that is not range. By having a large vocabulary, students will easier to communicate using
English. According to Napikul (2018:104) film subtitles can improve foreign language learners,
films can help students understand the characters that are brought during the conversation takes
place in the film. Scott Thombury (2005:1) says Speaking is so much a part of daily life that we
take it for granted. The average person procedures tens of thousands of words a day, although
some people-like auctioneers and politicians-may produce even more than so natural integral is
speaking that we forget how we once struggled to achieve this skill until, that is, we have to learn
how to do it all over again in a foreign languages. Talking is part of daily activities. Everyone
can process thousands of words per day to be able to speak either the language used daily or
foreign language to learn

Research question

The Research question which is used in this current poses, namely, what are the students’
perceptions on English Movie Improving English Skill to engage the students in classroom
activities

Research method

The type of research method that is used is a quantitative method by using quisionare
as an online survey design to reveal students’ perceptions on English movie which improve
the students’ English skill. The research participants are 41 EFL students at Makassar State
University as the population in this study which consisted of four homogeneous classes.
The research questions were spread based on the terms and conditions set by the
researcher, such as active students at University in Makassar. Where from the population
above, the researchers took samples from active students not just from the English
education study program, but also taken from other major as well, totaling 41 respondents.
The instrument was piloted before being given to participants. Data from the online survey
were analyzed manually

Conclussion :

English films have a special attraction for students in learning English especially on improving their
speaking and listening abilities. When students watch English movie, they will mostly get motivated to
learn and improve their English language abilities. Students will interpret words and phrases that
difficult in Indonesian, as well as to understand vocabulary which will hinder them in having the ability
to speak English. Student who are accustomed to watching English films tend to have the ability good
communication in English. They will know a lot and understand various vocabularies and can pronounce
words according to the original speaker. In this study, the results obtained from a positive relationship
correlation coefficient between students' habits of watching English films on a daily basis as the to
improve their English knowledge skills, especially on vocabularies, listening, and speaking skills. Students
who have the habit of watching English films ( with the help of English Subtitle of course ) so they will
have high speaking skills as well. Students who understand the meaning of English pronunciation then
they will grow confident when speaking in English.
