Read-a-thon
2013 What is a Read-a-thon? A Read-a-thon is similar to a walk-a-thon where students set goals to read for a set amount of time for one week. Students will collect pledges from sponsors to encourage them to reach their goal. Why a Read-a-thon? NO CATALOG! NO COLLECTING ORDERS! NO DELIVERY! NO HASSLE! The Read-a-thon teams fundraising with academics. Teachers and parents know that reading is an extremely important part of a childs education and recreation. This includes time spent reading independently as well as the time that students are read to. In addition, the money raised will be invested right back into the classrooms. Helpful Information for your Familys Success: o Try to get as many pledges from as many sponsors as you can and enter them on the Pledge Form. Sponsors can pledge per minute read or a Olat donation. Usually you can collect a Olat donation on the spot. Then you dont have to go back and collect the pledge. o Set a daily reading goal. Below is some guidance for setting goals by grade level: o Kindergarten: 10-20 minutes per day o 1st and 2nd Grade: 20-30 minutes per day o 3rd and 4th Grade: 30-60 minutes per day Collecting Pledges: Ask family, friends ,and neighbors that you know to sponsor you. Students will be setting reading goals and can ask for pledges by minutes read. Or they can get one-time donations. If it is a one time donation it can be paid at the time the students asks for the pledge. You do not have to wait until the Read-a-thon is over. Students will use the attached pledge form to keep track of their donations. (Make checks payable to Willard East Elementary) Key Dates: o Friday February 22nd Kick-off Assembly 2:30 o A volunteer will come around and explain the packet. o Friday February 22nd Tuesday March 5th READ and collect pledges o Tuesday March 5th Family Reading Night 6:30PM o Friday March 8th Money Due to classroom teacher o Friday March 22nd Winning students and classrooms announced at Tiger Pride Assembly o Tuesday March 19th School-wide Bounce House if goal met.
