Tutorial 15 (b) : Vectors (Part B : Lines and Vector Product)
(Supplementary Questions) JC2-2013

1. The diagram shows a rectangular cuboid with OA = 6 units and OC = OD = 4 units.
Unit vectors i, j, k are parallel to OA, OC and OD respectively. M is the mid-point of
AB and N is a point on the line OA such that ON = 2NA.

(i) Show that the line GM is parallel to the vector 3 2 i j k . [2]
(ii) Find the acute angle between the lines GM and FN. [4]
(iii) Find the position vector of the foot of the perpendicular from O to the line
GM. [4]

2. The diagram shows a cuboid in which OABC and DEFG are opposite faces. The
position vectors of A, C and D relative to the origin are 2i , 2j and k respectively.
The point P on the line GF and the point Q on the line BF are such that GP = i and
BQ = k. The mid-point of DG is L.

(i) Write down the position vectors of P and Q. [2]
(ii) Hence show that if the lines OP and LQ intersect then 2 2 0 + = . [4]
(iii) Deduce, or prove otherwise, that if Q is between B and F, and if OP and LQ
intersect, then P is between G and F. [2]
