This is the Scotland High School of Math, Science and Technology Newsletter. The know purpose of the newsletter is to let parents know what the students at our school are doing in the classroom. project-basedinstruction. MST uses project-based-learning, or PBL, as the main mode of instruction. Periodically throughout the school year, we will let you know about some of the projects your children are completing.

Chemistry In Ms. Mallory Cooks chemistry class, the students completed a project in which they made their own natural dyes. They could only use natural ingredients (fruits, vegetables, spices, etc) in making the dyes. By the end of the project they were to have 5 dramatically different colored eggs, along with a booklet which included the recipes and the chemistry behind why the dye stained the egg. Research was also done on why vinegar makes the egg dye a stronger brighter color.

Algebra 2 This semester in Mr. Travis Locklears Algebra 2 class, students created a video on "Solving EOC Questions." Each team had to create a video that showed how to answer a particular EOC question. The students enjoyed the project and it gave them the opportunity to be the teacher.

Drafting In Ms. Celeste Mortons Drafting classes, the seniors are just completing their senior project. The houses were designed on Autocad and are 3500 square feet, with a first floor, second floor, roof plan, and 4 elevations. The students are now completing the scaled model of their designs. The roof of the model comes off and you can actually see the design come to life. Intricate details, such as stairs, and interior cabinets are also included.

U.S. History/English 11 History Idol: World War I American Idol fever struck Ms. Rebecca Wilsons and Ms. Kristi Edwardss11th grade English and History this semester in the form of our very own History Idol project. The students, working in groups, made a music video using slant rhyme and the material learned about WWI. In the video, they performed the songs and added photos and other images from World War I. Finally, each class hosted a viewing day, which included a panel of "expert judges" (comprised of other teachers from throughout the school, as well as a celebrity guest judge, Mrs. Susan Bundy). The students had a spectacular time creating and watching the videos! They also learned a lot about World War I and Emily Dickinson, whom they proclaimed the grandmother of hip-hop!

Senior English AP English Literature In a recent project, the Mrs. Karen Cafaros AP English Literature students rewrote scenes from The Scarlet Letter into modern language and situations, then made videos of their scenes. Some were even shared on You Tube. They did a fantastic job! English 12

Every child must be encouraged to get as much education as he has the ability to take. We want this not only for his sake but for the nations sake. Nothing matters more to the future of our country: not military preparedness, for armed might is worthless if we lack the brain power to build a world of peace; not our productive economy, for we cannot sustain growth without trained manpower; not our democratic system of government, for freedom is fragile if citizens are ignorant. - Lyndon B. Johnson

Mrs. Cafaros English 12 class, in conjunction with reading Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne, created a travelogue slideshow of one of the countries that Phileas Fogg traveled through in the novel. They did an excellent job exploring the geography and culture of their assigned countries.

Geometry The project Ms. Susan McKinneys geometry students just finished is called the Christo & Jeanne Claude Project. Christo & Jeanne Claude are wrap artists. They wrap structures in fabric or ribbon. In this project the students had to research the work of the two artists. Then they used the artists' idea and picked a project of their own. They were in charge of picking a building, landscape, monument, or statue that they wanted to wrap or surround with ribbon. They then had to calculate the dimensions in order to determine the amount of materials required to complete their wrapping. Throughout the project they derived surface area formulas from area formulas.
