St. John of God No one is quite sure any longer what happened to John of God as an eight-year-old boy. He may have run away from his home in Portugal; he may have been kidnapped. What is certain is that soon after that he found himself homeless in Spain. John served in the army, and then became a shepherd. When John turned 40, he became anxious about what might be left of his life. He wanted his remaining years to have meaning. He went back to Portugal to find his parents, only to learn that both had died. He felt sad and guilty. He thought back on his life as a soldier and decided that he had brought harm to people instead of goodness. John opened a house in Granada. He invited in anyone who had nowhere else to go. His guests were beggars, prisoners just released from jail, prostitutes, and the poor. He came to be a familiar sight in Granada, carrying home a cripple he had found on the street. Years of soldiering had taught him how to care for wounds. Now he used that knowledge to nurse the sick. John begged strangers for money to feed his friends. Volunteers, including some of the needy people John had rescued, joined him in his work. They became a religious order, the Brothers Hospitallers, still serving the sick to this day. At age 55, John got sick after he jumped in a river to save a drowning man. His illness grew worse, but he would not rest in the Lord until the archbishop of Granada promised to watch over all Johns house guests. Then John died peacefully. St. John of God, pray for us.
