of Events
Candidate: Baylee Kovacsics L#: 00095634 Date and Time of Lesson: 03/22/2013 9:00am Grade Level: 4K School: Early Childhood Center Cooperating Teacher: Monty Richardson Subject: English Language Arts Lesson Title: Sequencing of Events Curriculum Standards Addressed: Common Core Standards PKRL 2: With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details. PKRL 3: With prompting and support, identify characters and major events in a story. Good Start Grow Smart Standards ELA-4K-1.4: Retell one or two events from a story read aloud. Cross Curricular Connections: The students will participate in a music and movement activity, The Bunny Hop. PD-4K-1.1: Move with balance and control while walking, running, jumping, marching, hopping, and galloping. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: The students will retell the sequence of events in a familiar story when given a cutting/gluing activity and objects from the story. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre-Assessment: The teacher will read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover by Lucille Colandro. The students will be asked a series of questions and the whole group will create a sequence using a storyboard. During small group, the students will be given a set of cards in which they will put in order according to the story. A checklist will be used to record results. Questions to Ask: Who is our main character? What did the old lady swallow first? What did she swallow next? What did she swallow after the daisy? After the butterfly? Bird? Pot? Gold? Fiddle? During Assessment: The teacher will observe participation in the Bunny Hop song, the read-aloud, and the storyboard exercise. Notes will be taken on participation. Questions to Ask: Did the student participate in the Bunny Hop song? Did the student participate in the storyboard exercise? Did the student participate in the read-aloud?

Post-Assessment: The students will be asked a series of questions regarding the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick by Lucille Colandro. The students will create a sequence using a storyboard. During small group, the students will color, cut, and paste pictures from the story in sequential order. They will then make individual Easter baskets regarding the events from the story. A checklist will be used to record results. Questions to Ask: Who is our main character? What did the old lady swallow first? What did she swallow next? What did she swallow after the straw? After the egg? Candy? Basket? Bow? Materials/Resources: -There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover! by Lucille Colandro -There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick! by Lucille Colandro -felt storyboard -laminated sequencing cards for both stories to use with storyboard -5 individual sets of 7 laminated sequencing cards -The Bunny Hop song on CD -19 easter buckets -19 plastic eggs -19 marshmallow peeps -19 wrapped candies -colored straw -19 pre-cut ribbons -19 pre-cut tongues -19 sequencing card printables -19 old lady printables glued onto construction paper -crayons Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): -Students should be comfortable with cutting and gluing paper for the small group activity. -Students should be able to follow simple directions. Procedures: 1. Have students stand in a line and follow the teacher in the steps for the Bunny Hop song. 2. Introduce Easter and ask students, What do you do to celebrate Easter? 3. Read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick by Lucille Colandro. 4. Introduce the storyboard, and as a whole group, put the cards in the correct sequence from the story. 5. Introduce the small group activity and model for students. 6. Dismiss for small group and centers. 7. Divide students up between the teacher and the assistant. The teacher will call students to the table to cut and glue the sequencing cards while the assistant will call students to make the Easter baskets. 8. For the cutting/gluing activity: a. Give students crayons and ask them to color their sequencing cards. b. Ask each student questions about the sequence of events and record results.

c. When students are finished coloring, have them cut the sequencing cards out and then glue them onto the old ladys tongue in order. 9. For the Easter basket activity: a. Have students choose each item according to the sequence of the story. b. Guide them in making the Easter basket and write their name on the basket they choose when they are finished. Accommodations: -For students who have behavioral problems during whole group, the teacher will have them seated in a chair at a table with the assistant. -For students who have trouble gluing during the activity, the teacher will assist them as needed. -For students who have trouble recalling events, the teacher will have the book nearby to be used for guidance.
