ARCH3120 Assignment 1 1.

1 Assignment 1 Cladding Documentation Study (group assignment) Submission by: 4:00 pm on Thursday 28 March Assessment weighting: 40% of Course Mark 1.1.1 Description The report will document, analyse and critically evaluate the faades of an existing building in Brisbane. The task involves observation, drawing, research, and analysis of the cladding systems. An evaluation of the faades will be based on research and a comparative analysis of architectural precedents. 1.1.2 Assignment objectives On completion of this assignment the student should be able to: describe in sketches and drawings a representative part of the building faades, analyse and evaluate the performance of the cladding system, compare the case study faade with relevant precedents of the same era (decade). Assessment criteria: Assignment 1 Technical Report This assignment will be assessed using the following criteria: 30% Accuracy, content and clarity of the drawings of the building and faades. 40% Analysis of construction methods and performance of the faades. 30% Evaluation and comparative analysis with precedents, including relevant references to books, trade literature or journals Format A3 report submitted electronically via Turnitin on BlackBoard as a pdf (single document). Use the reduce file size (under documentin Acrobat) function before submitting pdf. Tasks Choose 2 facades for a group of three students. Base the selection on orientation and different construction systems/materials if used (consult the coordinator or tutor if unsure). Site and building analysis Purpose of building and its use (and users). Describe and orientation, topography, built environment, overshadowing, views, noise. Climatic analysis of Brisbane and observations on microclimate (access to breezes, river, overshadowing, Describe and analyze the building form, limits of the site. Does the faade work as part of an overall building strategy? Faade description Sketch, draw, and photograph facades (limit the use of photographs in the report). Draw enough of the faade to describe the system (3 floors is generally enough but show minimum floor to floor) Where possible, describe construction systems, materials, jointscompare with other buildings if access prevents close inspection. Describe likely construction processes. Solar analysis Determine the sun-shading parameter Analyze building site in plan form and identify required controls Analyze the effectiveness of the sun shading on the 2/3 facades. If no sun-shading, why? Are there better examples? Evaluate the faade Evaluate the choice of construction system/s for the faade in relation to the function of buildingcompare with alternatives. With respect to thermal performance, identify good design practice and/or options to improve the faade design. Speculate on other factors that influence the thermal performance and thermal comfort requirements of the building. Attempt to evaluate the contribution of the faade to the sustainability of the building (does it have a Green Star rating) What improvements can be made? Precedents use for comparison and to inform descriptions & evaluation. Choose buildings that are similar in type/function and age. Notes Accurate sketches are preferred to CAD drawings but both can be use to describe and analysis the building there is no requirement to produce a detailed model of the entire building. Concise descriptions sketches and diagrams are often more informative than long description.
