The House on the Hill

The house on the hill has a beauty view of Nantucket Sound. Its about was 2 miles away from Wianno, Massachusetts. The problem was that no one could live in the house on the hill and surrounding land. The local Indians called the area The Land of None Thing. No kind of Wild life was ever seen going across or living on the land. The Indians never went on the land. Nor did they have a reason because there were none things on the land to eat or use. When the early settlers came to the land, they thought it was a godsend that the land had no wood and was ready for planting. A number of settlers tried to grow crops on the land but no crop grew there. Because no crop grew on the land and early settlers went somewhere else to live if they did not died first living on the land for number of unknown reason. Settler stop trying to settle on the land. The land was unused for about 120 years. No one was willing to living on the land. The first person to build to a real house on the land was an Irish Sea captain Tom McDaniel in 1876. He built the house which was actually mansion for his young bride Penelope. People in the area try to tell him that it was a bad idea to live on the land. He chooses the site for a coupler of reasons. It was close to Lewis Bay and the land was cheap. The house was place in the middle of the clearing. The mansion was two stories tall and 100 feet long. It was made from stone, which was quarry on site. On the roof had a widow walk, it was equip with all the latest convenience. They live in the house for about two year without any problem. He took the ferry one day that ran from Wianno to New York. He plays bridge for most of the trip in the ferrys main lounge. He seem calm, relax and in a good mood. About ten minutes after his step off the ferry he started to attack strangers in the street with deathly force. The police was forced to kill him. By the end of his killing spree three men, and three cops were death, and twenty three persons were also wounded.

A week after his dead, his bride, Penelope, was found cowering in one corner of her living room. For the rest of her short life she lives in a sanatorium totally mad. On the day before Penelope was found cowering the corner a close personal friend came to visit Mrs. McDaniel. She found her grieving but doing alright. On the next day a business associate came to see the widows on business. He found her cowering in one of living room corner. The entire content of the house was found to be destroyed. Any thing made of cloth was tore apart. Broken glass was every where. Heavy piece of furniture were threw out the windows. A popular theory of that day was an unknown number person broken into her house and scares her so bad that she had to be place in an asylum for the rest of her life. The supporting argument for this was the some of the furniture were so heavy it needs two people just to move it. It was notice that many of the friends of the Sea Captain and his bride who spent large amount time in the house on the hill started to act strangely after the death of the bride. The house was abandon after the Sea Captain and his wife incident. In spring of 1951 a land developer bought the land. A number of people told him about the history of land and the curse. He had a polite laugh with them about the curse. He was hoping the scenic view would help him to sell the houses. While he was arranging for more funding and necessity permit to finish the project, he live on the land in a trailer. There were rumors that some powerful local interest were working behind the scene to stop the development. These rumors was never confirmed. In summer 1953, the land developer came out his trailer one day. He was carrying a shot gun and backpack. He started walking toward Wianno. He met a couple hunters along the road, that just got out of there car. He shot them and kills them on the spot. Another car came down the road, started firing on it. The driver wrecks the car was killed in the crash.

When the police caught up with land developer there was a gun battle. By the end of the gun battle the he was dead and two police office also dead. When the land development estate was in probated, the county gains control of the land. The county did not want the land and try to get rid of the land. No one wants the land because of all the liens on the land. In later 60s and 70s the land became a local made out spot for teens. Some of the teens of the county started to act stranger. In the summer of 1975 Steve Travis (homeless man) started to illegal live on the land. No one object to the fact that Mr. Travis was living in a corners of the old mansion. Mr. Travis lives there quiet until fall of 1978. On the fall night, he went to lover lane and starts to attack the teenagers. Mr. Travis was killed by the teenagers that were left alive in love lane. Five boys and three girls were killed at which was later call by the local newspaper the Massacre at Lover Lane After the latest incident, Barnstable County took steps that this would not happen again. They made it into a wild life sanctuary. They put a fence around the area, and the fence was complete in 1979. Now days the fence is in poor shape and there are a number of holes in it. But what keep most of the people off the land is it reputation. In 1983 the County Commissioner found away of get for Federal Government funding for the upkeep and placing security on the property to keep it a Wild Life Sanctuary (no wild life has have been seen on the property.)
