TRAFFIC SUMMARY
During the month of January 2012, all operational airports (taken together) handled 133.60 thousand aircraft movements (excluding General Aviation Movements), 14.35 million passengers and 175.99 thousand tonnes of freight. The details are given in Table 1.1. TABLE-1.1: TOTAL TRAFFIC HANDLED IN JANUARY 2012 AND APR JAN 2011-12

The above table reveals that the aircraft movements and passenger traffic have increased by 10.4 per cent and 10.8 per cent respectively whereas freight traffic has shown a decrease of 8.0 per cent during January 2012 over traffic handled during January 2011.

2.1.1 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The total aircraft movements (International and Domestic) handled in January 2012 has shown an increase of 10.4 per cent as compared to the aircraft movement handled in January 2011 (refer to Annexure-I). Growth rates of
traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure IIC. The domestic aircraft movements have increased by 13.0 per cent during January 2012 compared to aircraft movements handled in January 2011. The total aircraft movements have witnessed an increase of 11.8 per cent i.e., from 1155.60 thousand movements to 1292.28 thousand movements during the period April - January 2011-12 as compared to the aircraft movements handled during April January 2010-11. Growth rates of traffic handled by different categories of airports are given in Annexure I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIC. 2.2.2. INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:
The international aircraft movements have shown an increase of 3.6 per cent during AprilJanuary 2011-12. Introduction of services of Jet Airways from the month of March 2011 at Trichy Airport has contributed to higher growth. All the international airports except Calicut and Mangalore airports have witnessed an increasing trend in
domestic aircraft movements during the period April - January 2011-12 as compared to the aircraft movement handled during April January 2010-11.

Air India Ltd. : Indian Airlines, Air India and Alliance Air. (Air Deccan / Kingfisher Red, Spice Jet, Go Air, Jet Konnect and Indigo Airlines are considered as low cost airlines) The share of private airlines in aircraft movements, passenger and freight traffic on the domestic sector is maintained at 82.6%, 83.9% and 86.0% respectively during January 2012. The share of domestic passenger traffic is shown graphically in chart 5.1. The overall share of passengers in Low Cost Airlines is increased to 46.3% in January 2012 as against 41.1% in January 2011. The detailed airport-wise share of Air India Limited and Private Airlines in domestic traffic is given in the table 5.1

The dispersion of air traffic in terms of percentage handled at different categories of airports in the country is shown in the Table - 6.1. The dispersion of traffic is also depicted in the Chart 6.1 for the month of January 2012. The Table 6.1 shows that seventeen international airports have major share in the countrys air traffic i.e. 79.2 per cent, 84.7 per cent and 96.4 per cent in aircraft movements, passenger and freight traffic respectively.

7.1 REGION WISE TREND: Northern Region has registered the highest growth rate of 11.6% closely followed by Southern Region with 11.3% and Western Region with 10.7% in total aircraft movements during the reporting month January 2012 compared to the traffic handled during January 2011. All the regions have registered significant growth ranging from 8 to 16 per cent in total passenger traffic during January 2012. Northern Region has registered the highest growth rate of 16.3 % followed by North Eastern Region with 12.7% and Eastern Region with 12.1% in the total passenger traffic during January 2012 compared to January 2011. All the Region have registered negative growth ranging from 5 to 18 per cent in total freight traffic during the reporting month January 2012 compared to the traffic handled during January 2011 resulting into an overall decrease of 8.0 %. Category wise & Region wise trends in traffic during January 2012 and for the period April January 2011-12 vis--vis April January 2010-11 may be visualized in the Annexure V. 7.2 REGION WISE SHARE: Southern Region has witnessed the highest percentage share of 32.5 % in total Aircraft Movements followed by Western Region with 28.2 % and Northern Region with 25.2 % during January 2012. Southern and Western Regions have witnessed the highest equal percentage share of 30.3 % in total passenger traffic followed by Northern Region with 27.1 % during January 2012. Southern Region has also witnessed the highest percentage share of 33.9 % in total freight traffic closely followed by Western Region with 32.6 % and Northern Region with 26.7 % during January 2012.
