NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for homeuse, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org. NEWS FROM THE DAIRY PRINCESS- Did you know that each morning 25 million kids go to school, and some of them are hungry? A large number of children start their day off on the wrong foot by not eating a healthy breakfast. Hunger effects students ability to learn and their attention span. We can change this with a program called Breakfast in the Classroom. The program provides students with a healthy breakfast each morning at school directly in their classrooms. Most school breakfast programs require students to eat in the cafeteria and this can make students feel singled out from others. Thats why this program makes sure that students eat in the classroom together with other students. Research shows that schools providing universal school breakfast (served free to all students) have higher breakfast participation, especially when breakfast is served in the classroom, resulting in a higher percentage of students consuming breakfast. These well-balanced, healthy meals include dairy products like milk, yogurt, or cheese that helps a student reach their goal of three dairy products every day. The nine nutrients in milk help to nourish their body as well as build their bones . The meal only takes about ten minutes to eat and provides plenty of benefits for the students. Students who eat breakfast have higher math and reading skills than students that dont eat breakfast. I eat breakfast each morning and know how important it is to my learning skills. I recently attended an event at the New York State Capital that supported and encouraged schools to add a Breakfast in the Classroom program. Please contact your school to encourage them to offer this great program. TURKEY SUPPER, April 20 - Sponsored by the South Cambridge United Methodist Church, at 4:30 PM at Pleasant Valley Grange Hall, intersection 59 and Cty Rt. 74. Info: 518677-5227. SPRING
2013
As the weather begins to warm and the daylight hours get longer, your yard can quickly become the most important "room" of your home. However, you aren't alone if your backyard looks outdated and lackluster. Weather conditions can be tough on outdoor areas, but with a few simple updates, you can create the perfect outdoor living space. Gates and gate hardware Perhaps the first thing you and your guests see (and use) when entering your yard is the gate, so why not make a great first impression by updating rusty and squeaky gate hardware? D&D Technologies recently launched the LokkLatch Magnetic, a gate latch that operates and locks from both sides of the gate, and it's rekeyable so you don't have to carry multiple keys for your house. Featuring D&D's patented magnetic latching system, and horizontal and vertical adjustment to ensure a consistent gate closure upon ground movement, LokkLatch Magnetic is the first gate lock to offer coordinating handle trim covers that match your lighting and yard accessories. Available in non-rusting black, brushed and polished metal, the gate hardware helps to create a cohesive look that enhances your outdoor living environment. Complete the look with matching TruClose self-closing gate hinges, also offering coordinating trim covers. These modern gate options feature a limited lifetime warranty and are available under the Stanley brand through select Lowe's stores, and other hardware retailers under the National Hardware brand. Visit www.ddtechglobal.com for a full range of gate hardware products and to find a retailer near you. Lighting Weather permitting, your yard can be the perfect place to relax for an evening. Avoid sitting in total darkness. The many options of patio lighting including path sconces, post lamps and even string lights - all are an answer to keeping your outdoor space lit and inviting. Furniture The key to decorating any room in your home is attractive, comfortable furniture that beckons to be sat upon, and this is no different for your outdoor furniture. While prices on outdoor furniture can be a little overwhelming, used furniture with a little love and creativity can be good as new, without the high cost. Cozy chairs, chaise lounges and benches can gain new use with a coat of outdoor spray paint, then recover cushions and add colorful pillows to finish it off. Plants, flowers and shrubs Even if they're only alive for a few months out of the year, flowers can bring any yard to life. A few strategically placed shrubs, flower beds and herb gardens can help turn your outdoor area into a lively space perfect for relaxing personal moments or parties with friends and family. Statues and accessories Give your backyard even more personality by selecting a few garden statues or other accessories that reflect your style - such as recycled metal sculptures, elaborately painted bird houses, unique planters or large colorful rocks. With a few simple updates, you can easily create an outdoor retreat in your own backyard that can provide you the space for entertaining, reading and relaxing without a costly renovation. So go get started.
