A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: In this lesson, students will put all that they have learned in this unit to use by visiting a website. Students will use prior knowledge to complete the lesson. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: all skill levels Grouping: individual: computer activity, paper on computer activity Whole group: review, paper on computer activity presentation, discussion C. Materials: Computers Review PowerPoint Lined Paper Pencils D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards C13.3.1 Identify and discuss examples of rules, laws, and authorities that keep people safe and property secure. C13.3.2 Discuss that democracy involves voting, majority rule, and setting rules. C14.3.1 Name the current President of the United States. C14.3.2 Name the current mayor of the town. Student-Friendly Standards C13.3.1 I can identify and discuss examples of laws and rules that keep us safe. C13.3.2 I can discuss what things a democracy involve such as voting, majority rule, and rules C14.3.1 I can name the current President of the United States. C14.3.2 I can name the current Mayor of my city.

E. Procedure: 1. As a class we will review: -

What laws and rules are What democracy is- what voting and majority rule is Who the President is Who Las Vegas, Nevadas Mayor is

2. We will go to the library. Students will complete a minimum of 2/5 games on the iCivics website.

Go to: http://www.icivics.org/games Game to complete :Cast your vote or Responsibility Game to complete: Counties Work or Executive Command or Law Craft If you have enough time to complete more than the two required games, you can do so, but you must pick from the list given. Remember to write down the games you chose to complete.

3. Students will write a 2 paragraph paper on what games they chose to play, why they chose to play those specific games, and what they learned from those games. In addition, students are to write at least one paragraph on what they learned from this unit. 4. Students will be selected to share what they wrote-class will listen and discuss the websites. 5. CLOSURE: What is democracy? What is the difference between a law and rule?-Give 1 example of each F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the students written paper to measure their understanding of the unit on civics Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. C14.3.1 Name the current President of the United States. C14.3.2 Name the current mayor of the town. If students are able to correctly give information in their papers as well as tell what they learned from the game, I will know that the students understood the concept of the activity.

G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the entire lesson will be easy; it is a review and game play lesson. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I do not think this lesson will be challenging to teach. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? This is the end of the entire unit. The follow up would be to have students participate in a class election. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Pinpoint the material they are having problems with, reteach them the material. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I do not think the lesson needs to be changed. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? I was having trouble finding a standard to go with the activity I had planned, I integrated a review. After all, reviews are always helpful!

Review: What are rules? One of a set of explicit or understood regulations or principles governing conduct within a particular activity or sphere. What are laws? Enforceable body of official rules and regulations, established by people in authority who use them to govern the affairs of people in a society. What is democracy? A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. A state governed in such a way. What is voting? a method for a group such as a meeting or an electorate to make a decision or express an opinion What is majority rule? The principle that the greater number should exercise greater power. Who is the President of the U.S.A? President Barack Obama Who is the Mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada? Mayor Carolyn Goodman
