Ayurveda

INTRODUCTION
Ayurveda or ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional medicine native to the Indian subcontinent and a form of alternative medicine. The oldest known ayurvedic texts are the Suruta Samhit and the Charaka Samhit. These Classical Sanskrit encyclopedias of medicine are among the foundational and formally compiled works of ayurveda. By the medieval period, ayurvedic practitioners developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments. Current practices derived (or reportedly derived) from ayurvedic medicine are regarded as part of complementary and alternative medicine, and, along with siddha and Traditional Chinese medicine, form the basis for systems medicine. Safety concerns have been raised about Ayurveda; for instance, two U.S. studies found that about 20 percent of Ayurvedic Indian-manufactured patent medicines contained toxic levels of heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic. Other concerns include the use of herbs containing toxic compounds and the lack of quality control in Ayurvedic facilities. In classical Sanskrit literature, Ayurveda was called "the science of eight components" (Sanskrit), a classification that became canonical for ayurveda. They are:

Kya-chikits: "cure of diseases affecting the body" (general medicine) Kaumra-bhtya "treatment of children" (paediatrics) halya-chikits Surgery, "removal of any substance which has entered the body (as extraction of darts, of splinters, etc.)" lkya-tantra "cure of diseases of the eye or ear etc. by sharp instruments" (ophthalmology/ENT[dubious discuss]) Bhta-vidy "treatment of mental diseases supposed to be produced by demoniacal influence" (demonology / exorcism/psychiatry[dubious discuss]) Agada-tantra "doctrine of antidotes" (toxicology) Rasayana-tantra "doctrine of elixirs" Vjkaraa tantra "doctrine of aphrodisiacs

Principles and terminology

Several philosophers in India combined religion and traditional medicinenotable examples being that of Hinduism and ayurveda. Shown in the image is the philosopher Nagarjuna known chiefly for his doctrine of the Madhyamaka (middle path)who wrote medical works The Hundred Prescriptions and The Precious Collection, among others. The three doas and the 5 elements from which they are composed.Since Ayurveda is really the generic term for "traditional medicine" in India, actual practice may be widely divergent. Descriptively, one may either focus on the historical foundation from the evidence of the earliest ayurvedic texts of the early centuries of the Common Era, or alternatively a description may take an ethnographic approach and focus on the forms of traditional medicine prevalent across India today. Mahbhta Dosha Guna Hinduism Buddhism

History
Ayurveda is a discipline of the upaveda or "auxiliary knowledge". It is treated as a supplement or appendix of the Vedas themselves, usually either the Rigveda or the Atharvaveda. The samhita of the Atharvaveda itself contains 114 hymns or incantations for the magical cure of diseases. There are various legendary accounts of the "origin of ayurveda", e.g. that the science was received by Dhanvantari (or Divodasa) from Brahma Tradition also holds that a lost text written by the sage Agnivesh, a student of the sage Bharadwaja, influenced the writings of ayurveda.

Scientific appraisal
In studies in mice, the leaves of Terminalia arjuna have been shown to have analgesic and antiinflammatory properties. As a traditional medicine, many ayurveda products have not been tested in rigorous scientific studies and clinical trials. In India, research in ayurveda is undertaken by the statutory body of the Central Government, the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS), through a national [52] network of research institutes. A systematic review of ayurveda treatments for rheumatoid arthritis concluded that there was insufficient evidence, as most of the trials were not done properly, and the one [53] high-quality trial showed no benefits. A review of ayurveda and cardiovascular disease concluded that the evidence for ayurveda was not convincing, though some herbs seemed promising. Two varieties of Salvia have been tested in small trials; one trial provided evidence that Salvia lavandulifolia (Spanish sage) may improve word recall in young adults, and another provided evidence that Salvia officinalis (Common sage) may improve symptoms in Alzheimer's patients. Many plants used as rasayana (rejuvenation) medications are potent antioxidants. Neem appears to have beneficial pharmacological properties. Turmeric and curcumin have shown effectiveness in preventing and treating cancer.

Cosmetics in ayurveda
Ayurveda being the Science of life has also emphasized upon its importance by saying, good looks help in boosting the psychological state of mind and makes person feel good about oneself. It has described very systematically, the measures to attain it,maintain it and also to enhance it through proper diet and nutrition, serenity of mind, and other specific measures to take care of different aspects of beauty like :

Complexion Hair care Care of Eyes Foot care Well proportionate growth of body parts Most importantly the post surgical or post pregnancy or post inflammatory conditions of different body parts involved like scratch marks Post inflammatory hypo/hyper pigmentation Post surgical marks, loss of normal texture and body contour are all taken care in Ayurveda with different local medicaments to improve the aesthetic value of the parts involved.

Beauty Management through Ayurveda: Diet and nutrition:

Intake of a balanced diet in terms of nutrients as well as physical form, and its proper digestion and assimilation in the body so that it can nourish all the parts of body to give rise to a healthy body and hence healthy appearance is emphasized in Ayurveda. Since, skin reflects the health of a person, it cannot look healthy and beautiful unless it is properly nourished.

Mode of life:
Regular cleansing of body both internal and external as well as of mind (through meditation) helps clear up the toxins of internal as well as external environment along with some toning up procedures for body and skin like regular physical exercise yogasanas (specific body postures),body massage, facial massage, foot massage also enhance the beauty.

OCIMUM SANCTUM:Ocimum tenuiflorum, also known as Holy Basil, tulsi, or tulas, is an aromatic plant in the family Lamiaceae which is native throughout the Eastern World tropics and widespread as a cultivated plant and an escaped weed. It is an erect, much branched subshrub, 3060 cm tall with hairy stems and simple, opposite, green leaves that are strongly scented. Leaves have petioles, and are ovate, up to 5 cm long, usually slightly toothed. The flowers are purplish in elongate racemes in close whorls. The two main morphotypes cultivated in India and Nepal are green-leaved (Sri or Lakshmi tulsi) and purple-leaved (Krishna tulsi).

Tulsi is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely known across South Asia as a medicinal plant and an herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda and has an important role within the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves. The variety of Ocimum tenuiflorum used in Thai cuisine is referred to as Thai holy basil (Thai language: kaphrao); it is not to be confused with Thai basil, which is a variety of Ocimum basilicum.

AYURVEDA
An altar with tulsi for daily worship in a courtyard in India Tulsi has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda for its diverse healing properties. It is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Ayurvedic text. Tulsi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded in Ayurveda as a kind of "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity. Tulsi extracts are used in ayurvedic remedies for a variety of ailments. Traditionally, tulsi is taken in many forms: as herbal tea, dried powder, fresh leaf or mixed with ghee. Essential oil extracted from Karpoora tulsi is mostly used for medicinal purposes and in herbal cosmetics, and is widely used in skin preparations.

Aelo-vera

Classification:
Kingdom: Plantae Clade: Clade: Order: Family: Angiosperms Monocots Asparagales Xanthorrhoeaceae

Subfamily: Asphodeloideae Genus: Aloe

Species:

A. vera

Aloe vera -

Aloe vera is a succulent plant species that probably originated in northern Africa. The species does not have any naturally occurring populations, although closely related aloes do occur in northern Africa. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine since the beginning of the first century AD. Extracts from A. vera are widely used in the cosmetics and alternative medicine industries, being marketed as variously having rejuvenating, healing or soothing properties. There is, however, little scientific evidence of the effectiveness or safety of A. vera extracts for either cosmetic or medicinal purposes, and what positive evidence is available is frequently contradicted by other studies.

Description
Aloe vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 60100 cm (24 39 in) tall, spreading by offsets. The leaves are thick and fleshy, green to grey-green, with some varieties showing white flecks on the upper and lower stem surfaces. The margin of the leaf is serrated and has small white teeth. The flowers are produced in summer on a spike up to 90 cm (35 in) tall, each flower being pendulous, with a yellow tubular corolla 23 cm (0.8 1.2 in) long. Like other Aloe species, Aloe vera forms arbuscular mycorrhiza, a symbiosis that allows the plant better access to mineral nutrients in soil.

Distribution
The natural range of Aloe vera is unclear, as the species has been widely cultivated throughout the world. Naturalised stands of the species occur in the southern half of the Arabian peninsula, through North Africa (Morocco, Mauritania, Egypt) as well as Sudan and neighbouring countries, along with the Canary, Cape Verde, and Madeira Islands. This distribution is somewhat similar to the one of Euphorbia balsamifera, Pistacia atlantica, and a few others, suggesting that a dry sclerophyl forest once covered large areas, but has been dramatically reduced due to desertification in the Sahara, leaving these few patches isolated. Several closely related (or sometimes identical) species can be found on the two extreme sides of the Sahara: Dragon trees (Dracaena) and Aeonium being two of the most representative examples.

Plant anatomy and harvesting

The tree is small to medium in size, reaching 8 to 18 m in height, with a crooked trunk and spreading branches. The branchlets are glabrous or finely pubescent, 1020 cm long, usually deciduous; the leaves are simple, subsessile and closely set along branchlets, light green, resembling pinnate leaves. The flowers are greenish-yellow. The fruit is nearly spherical, light greenish yellow, quite smooth and hard on appearance, with six vertical stripes or furrows. Ripening in autumn, the berries are harvested by hand after climbing to upper branches bearing the fruits. The taste of Indian gooseberry is sour, bitter and astringent, and it is quite fibrous. In India, it is common to eat gooseberries steeped in salt water and turmeric to make the sour fruits palatab. It is also used to straighten hair.

Botanical name: Curcuma longa

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) English pronunciation: is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It is native to tropical South Asia and needs temperatures between 20C and 30C (68F and 86F) and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive.[3] Plants are gathered annually for their rhizomes, and propagated from some of those rhizomes in the following season. In Vietnam, turmeric is called "ngh", "c ngh". When not used fresh, the rhizomes are boiled for several hours and then dried in hot ovens, after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used as a spice in curries and other South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, for dyeing, and to impart color to mustard condiments. Its active ingredient is curcumin and it has a distinctly earthy, slightly bitter, slightly hot peppery flavor and a mustardy smell.

Production and etymology

Brahmi is also the name given to Centella asiatica, particularly in North India, and Kerala where it is also identified in Malayalam as muttil or kodakan. This identification of brhm as C. asiatica has been in use for long in northern India, as Hmdri's Commentary on (yurvdarasyana) treats(C. asiatica) as a synonym of brahmi, although that may be a case of mistaken identification that was introduced during the 16th century.

Rose

Rosa rubiginosa

Scientific classification Kingdom: Plantae (unranked): Angiosperms (unranked): Eudicots (unranked): Rosids Order: Rosales Family: Rosaceae Subfamily: Rosoideae Genus: Rosa Species: Rubiginosa

Rose:
A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach 7 meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa, which was perhaps borrowed from Oscan, from Greek rhdon (Aeolic wrdon), itself borrowed from Old Persian wrd- (wurdi), related to Avestan vara, Sogdian ward, Parthian wr.

Rose leaflets

The leaves are borne alternately on the stem. In most species they are 5 to 15 centimetres (2.0 to 5.9 in) long, pinnate, with (3) 59 (13) leaflets and basal stipules; the leaflets usually have a serrated margin, and often a few small prickles on the underside of the stem. Most roses are deciduous but a few (particularly from South east Asia) are evergreen or nearly so.

Uses
Roses are best known as ornamental plants grown for their flowers in the garden and sometimes indoors. They have been also used for commercial perfumery and commercial cut flower crops. Some are used as landscape plants, for hedging and for other utilitarian purposes such as game cover and slope stabilization. They also have minor medicinal uses.

Food and drink:

Rose hips are occasionally made into jam, jelly, and marmalade, or are brewed for tea, primarily for their high vitamin C content. They are also pressed and filtered to make rose hip syrup. Rose hips are also used to produce Rose hip seed oil, which is used in skin products and some makeup products.
