What's a BFG?

Summer is Coming

This was a question that many kindergarteners were asking as they began a recent chapter book. Once they started reading the story, by Roald Dahl, they quickly found out what it was. Skye, Kaci, Jillian and Cole summarized the book as "The BFG, (Big Friendly Giant), is about a little girl named Sophie who helps the BFG with a plan to stop the other giants from hurting more children. The giants in the story catch dreams to give to children. The BFG catches good dreams while the other giants catch bad dreams." As the students were reading the story they are engaged as active listeners. This is done by asking what happened in the previous chapters or what the meanings of new words are. Another way that the children are engaged as active listeners is by having the children make predictions about what will happen in different parts of the story. After the story we asked the children to share their favorite part of the story.

Roller Skating at Orbit Skating Center

Summer is just around the corner, and we are well int the registration process. The kids have been talking about some of their favorite moments of last year. Shaili D., first grade, was very sad to see that the Orb Skate field trip was on a week that she would not be attending because that was her favorite field trip from last year. Eleanor H., first grade, shared that she was really excited to go roller skating this year because she has never been before. In addition to the fun field trips, we are also going to be working with Hot Shot Sports and Urban Beat Dance Company at both of ou sites. The children who attended the Glenview Program were introduced to several different art media. children painted pre-made clay flower pots, created mosaic tiled mirrors, made their own clay creations and created comics.

"This is when the BFG is playing his trumpet for the queen," Luke M. When asked what their favorite part was Luke N., said, "When Sophie was placed on the window ledge of the queen's bedroom." Katelynn and Ruby both said that their favorite part was when different characters ate something called a "snozzcumber", which is the only thing the BFG eats because he does not like the taste of "human beans." Daniel S. was very enthusiastic when he, said, "The whole story!"

The children worked hard on these projects, and man took pride in the work that they completed. Joshua P. first grade, commented that his favorite thing about working with Mrs. Scozia last summer was making th flower pot that he gave to his mom. "She still uses it today," he said.

Jillian P., "This is when Sophie was taken by the BFG."

Presidential Active Lifestyle

A highlight mentioned by Laura N., 1st grade, was the talent show. "I remember Shaili and Nora's gymnastic routine from the talent show. It was good." In addition to the acts that the students developed, they also got to show off the dance that they learned in the Urban Beat class for the parents. The students who did not attend the Urban Beat class were taught by our own kids. On the night of the talent show, there was 100% participation in the dance of the children who attended. While talking to Sara G., 2nd grade, she shared that her favorite memory was playing all of the

One highlight of the program was working with Pablo Picasso's piece Hands With Bouquet. If you would lik to see the Picasso painting here is a link to it Friends of Art Hand With Bouquet We began the activity by discussing who Picasso was and looking at the piece we were working with. We talked about the colors that were used in the painting Then, we asked the children to create their own work inspired by the piece. The students used the piece as a reference but took the liberties to make their own unique pieces by adding different colored flowers and decorating the hand with rings and watches. It was a great week, and we hope the children had as much fun as we did.
