YOUR TRUSTED PARTNER IN EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION

During the summer it is important children keep up on their reading. This will help them maintain and improve their reading level going into the next school next year. This will also help them to become a life long reader. During camp after lunch every day the campers are given a choice of doing quiet activities and this is a great time for the children to take time to read a book. Please make sure that there is one in their bags for them to read.

We had a fantastic first week of camp. The campers enjoyed many of the onsite activities like the Gold Rush, playing several different sports, and art and science projects. During one of our art activities we explored the painting style of Jackson Pollack. He is known for his development of what is now called the "drip" technique. Before Painting inspired by starting the process we Jackson Pollack talked about how he developed this style and different ways it it used. Once we had a better understanding of his technique we got to go and experiment with our own techniques. Fourth grader Ashley B. said her favorite science project was making slime. When asked to describe the experience she said, "I liked the slime we made during science because it was really slimey." And who could forget the Slip and Slide!

During our Alice in Wonderland theme day the children participated in activities inspired by the story. One of the activities was to listen to a condensed version of the book. A new section of the newsletter that we would like to introduce is the book review done by one of the children. This section gives the campers an opportunity to recommend books to their fellow campers. If your child reads a book that they enjoy or if you read a book as a family that you would like to recommend we encourage you to let us know. Book review by Nika C., fourth grade

The Familiars Written by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson The Familiars is a great book! Aldwyn, a normal alley cat, spends his life doing what he is best at, running. But one day, while running away, he finds himself trapped in a wizard's shop. Aldwyn can't believe his luck. He was bought by a young wizard named Jack! Unfortunately Jack gets taken by an evil queen and the only one creature who can save him is Aldwyn. Adam Epstien and Andrew Jacobson do a great job making sure that you can't stop reading this book. Anyone who is in third grade or higher should read The Familiars!

We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Coach Anna from Hot Shots again this summer. Coach Anna joins the campers at a workshop on Fridays. During our time with Hot Shots the children play many different games and work on soccer and basketball skills units. In addition to Hot Shots, we are looking forward to starting our workshops with Urban Beat Dance Company and Mrs. Skozia, the art teacher at Avoca West Elementary School.

Enrollment for the 2013-14 school year is going on now. If you need enrollment forms please let us know. If you are registering for the morning program please remember we need to have the forms turned in so we can let families know if there will be a program. Luckily for the staff, and some of the parents, none of these campers got to stay for more than a day. We had a great visit with Deb the Frog Lady, who brought many different amphibians and reptiles to show the children. Her passion for the creatures was evident as she introduced each species and told us anecdotes about that particular animal. The best part about the day was every child had the opportunity to hold one of the visitors! First grader Cole M., said, "I liked all of the animals that she brought because they looked really cool." We would like to thank Deb for the great visit!
