All talk, no action still makes Frost/Nixon a captivating film

There is perhaps no way to pinpoint the time when Americans began to distrust

their government, believing all politicians are corrupt. One could argue, however, that the election of President Barack Obama could be a turning point in the other direction.

What cannot be denied, though, is that the Watergate scandal and subsequent resignation of former president Richard Nixon is a dark mark on the office Obama now holds.

What also cannot be denied is that Nixon is one of the United States most widely accepted villains, a man frequently caricatured, frequently quoted, whos scandal set a new precedent for the naming of scandals (Nipple-gate? Strippergate?). While Im sure the fact that Nipple-gate is his crowning legacy may cause Nixon to turn in his grave, I am also willing to bet that Ron Howards towering achievement Frost/Nixon will not. It chronicles the attempts of journalist David Frost (Michael Sheen) to secure camera time with disgraced former President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella), the struggles of his researchers James Reston Jr. (Sam Rockwell) and Bob Zelnik (Oliver Platt), and the many failed attempts to finance the project. Finally, we witness the explosive interviews that reignited Frosts dying career, and put the final nail in Nixons coffin. Based on true events, this

KATIE BRADFORD film is easily one of the best of the year. I find this very surprising, as well, considering the film is entirely comprised of talking. A film with no action, no sex, and hours of people sitting opposite each other rambling about wire taps and Vietnam; sounds like a $10 sleeping pill, but I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. This, coupled with stimulating cinematography and unbelievable acting is what makes the film exciting. No explosions needed.

Langella has come out of nowhere, a near unknown despite having been in the industry since the 60s, and has completely blown away the entire film industry. His portrayal of Nixon is no peace-sign waving, cheekshaking comedic impression. He has become Nixon. The best part of his depiction is that despite the fact that Nixon admits to being a criminal, violating the rights and trust of the citizens of the United States, near the end of the film you feel a certain amount of pity for the poor old man. He has failed on perhaps the greatest stage a person can fail upon, and it is truly tragic. Sheen is also incredible as Frost, proving himself to be quite adept at playing public figures that are still alive (perhaps the toughest type of acting). Dont let the all-talk, noaction status of this film throw you it is a truly entertaining depiction of history, and deserving of its five Oscar nominations.
