KATIE BRADFORD
KOURIER-STANDARD
It is my belief that many
people have become frus-
trated with Hollywood due
to its pandering to the low-
est common denominator.
Insisting on creating prof-
itable, however mindless,
drivel, these films usually
have sex, drugs, explosions
or some variation of those
three.
Now, dont get me wrong,
a lot of these films are
extremely entertaining and
many quite good, but this
formulaic filmmaking can
sometimes get a little old.
A breath of fresh air can
be found in films like Smart
People from director Noam
Murro. Produced by the
man behind hit smart film
Sideways, this film caters
to those who enjoy intellec-
tual stimulation, and also
manages to critique them at
the same time. You will go
to this film thinking: I am
a smart person. No [insert
mindless teen flick here]
for me, Im seeing Smart
People. Why? Because I am
a smart person. This deci-
sion is surely a smart one.
If you do this, you will
feel slightly pretentious
when you leave, and you
will kind of deserve it.
Of course the film is
smart, its in the title, but
it also makes for a great
comedy on the incredible
stupidity of those far too
aware of their own bril-
liance. Professor Lawrence
Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid)
is a professor of English
Li t erat ure at Carnegi e
Mel l on Universi t y. He
believes himself to be far
more intelligent than most
around him. He is smarter
than his students, his co-
workers, his children, even
the publishers that refuse to
option his book about how
smart he is. His daughter
Vanessa (Ellen Page) is the
top of her class, determined
to be the smartest 16-year-
old on the planet. The only
problem is that this attitude
begins to alienate them from
the people they love.
When Lawrence has an
accident and cant drive,
his adoptive brother Chuck
(Thomas Haden Church)
becomes his chauffeur.
Chuck hops from job to job
and is a burden in the eyes
of Lawrence. However, it is
this burden who will teach
the Wetherholds a disci-
pline theyre failing at: basic
social skills.
The film is slow in parts,
and lacks a certain punch;
however it is a pleasant
experiment. The social retar-
dation of the characters is
quite comical at times, but
also tragic. The acting is top
notch, with Page playing an
overachieving know-it-all
who needs to learn to be a
kid, and Quaid is excellent.
For those who enjoy a
higher brow of humour, you
may like this romp with the
intellectuals, and will love
it even more when theyre
taken down to size.
