As Halloween approaches, the theatres arent the only place for blood and gore. Saw IV, from director Darren Lynn Bousman, is capitalizing on the holiday, churning out another flick in series famous for last minute plot twists, confusing timelines and brutal violence. Just a few warnings: if you havent seen Saw I-III then this article will ruin important revelations. Read at your own risk! Also, it is important to note the rating on this film: 18A. They arent joking. Honestly. If you are easily sickened, disturbed or thinking of taking any young person to this film, I would advise against it. It is a truly twisted brand of horror. The story picks up where the last left off, and is (as always) very confusing. It doesnt feel the need to explain key moments or characters. This is an issue mainly because it means that those new to the series will not get as much out of it as

KATIE BRADFORD those loyal from the start. A group of police have gone missing, and there are fears that others are next. SWAT Commander Rigg (Canadian Lyriq Bent) has watched friends disappear around him, and finds himself thrust into one of Jigsaws (aka John, played by Tobin Bell) twisted games. Whats the catch? Jigsaw is (apparently) dead. In the last film, we also find out that Johns apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith) is also dead. If both killer and apprentice are dead, who is setting up all of these traps? That is what Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), and the newly appointed FBI agents Lynn

(Bahar Soomekh) and Strahm (Scott Patterson), are trying to find out. As Rigg battles through the many games set for him from beyond the grave, detectives question Johns ex-wife about his past. This is the best part of the film, because it attempts to explain the basis for the killers twisted logic, and gives the audience far more insight into the complex character of Jigsaw. However, the film is imperfect overall. While maintaining the staple Jigsaw traps, they feel less inspired than before. Even the blood and guts didnt feel as exciting. While the special effects team is obviously genius, gore was also included at times which felt completely unnecessary. If someone is trying to escape a machine pulling their scalp off, thats one thing. Watching an entire body being taken apart for five minutes just for giggles is another. So should you see Saw IV (tee hee)? Yes. Youll get your moneys worth in fake blood alone, and a good Halloween scare.
