1. OFF THE BENCHReplacing quarterback Luis Thompson (12 #2), Mason Motely (10 #10) prepares for a pass for the most important game of the year. I dont really like sitting on the bench, but Im kind of disappointed because Luis doesnt get to finish his season; Motley said. Hes the leader of the team, so it was bittersweet for me to go in. MORAL SUPPORTPercy Minor (12, #6) pushes an injured Luis Thompson (12 #2) onto the field, as Thompson prepares to cheer for his teammates on the sidelines of Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium. Even though he was hurt, hes still part of the team, Minor said. So when we won, he won too.Photo by Liz Palmer. 3. BREAKING DOWN After breaking his ankle and dislocating his knee during the game against St. Xavier on Oct. 14, Luis Thompson (12 #2) lies on his back while icing the injuries. CHANGEof
With the crowd wincing in shock and concern, Luis Thompson (12, #2) grimaced, limping to the sideline. Staring intently onto the field was second string quarterback Mason Motley (10, #10), who came to the realization that he was expected to take the seniors place. A broken ankle and a dislocated knee ended Thompsons final season, one week before the most talked about match-up of the yearthe Male/Manual game. It was more that I was mad than anything because I wouldnt get to finish my season for the Male/Manual game and the play-offs, Thompson said. I didnt get to play out there with my brothers that Ive been playing with for the last four years, and I wouldnt get to finish it with them like we started.

PLANS
on the role of a mentor to compensate for it. He helped me know who my read was to make my decision for where to throw the ball or run the ball, Motley said. In practice, you get a feel for what happens, but it doesnt happen as quickly as it does in the games, so it helped me get up to speed for the games. Those it hit the hardest handled the sudden change somewhat optimistically. Im just trying to look to the positive and try to get better so I can play in college, Thompson said. As far as Mason filling in, hes doing a good job and Im not mad because I know thats what had to happen. Im injured so the next man has to step up, and Im proud of the way hes been playing.

In lieu of the injured, first string quarterback, Luis Thompson (12, #2), Mason Motley (10, #10) stepped in for the Old Rivalry game. Words by Sarah Rohleder Design by Eli Fosl
Playing in place of Thompson was bittersweet for Motley. It was a privilege, because its such a big rivalry, but I feel bad that Luis didnt get to play because it was his senior year and his last year to beat Male, Motley said. Because of his age, some doubted Motleys ability to fill in as varsity quarterback, but that only encouraged him to prevailand he did, with a victory against Male. When [the Male coach] found out that I was starting quarterback, he thought wed run the ball a lot instead of throwing it, but we really mixed it up, Motley said. [Thompson] has better strength than me and hes faster, but Im a good compromise. Hes a better athlete and everyone knows it, but I had to step in and help. The adjustment wasnt easy for them, but Thompson took

I was nervous. Once we got there it was the shock factor because of the big stadium, but the student section calmed me down.
