Reached Area - Troy Camp works within the region known as Historical South Central. - Within this area are 18 public elementary schools where Troy Camp campers are recruited from. Ethnicity Demographic - In Los Angeles County, Hispanics compose 47 percent of the populations, with Blacks makings up 9 percent, Asians compose 13 percent and Whites total 29 percent. - In Historical South Central, the demographic is slightly different. - Hispanics make up 87 percent of the population. - Blacks compose 10 percent of the population. - Asians and Whites each total 1 percent of the population. Socioeconomic Demographic - South LA is an inner-city neighborhood composed of some of the poorest people in the county. - Poverty rates in South LA are twice as high as the county level. Education - Education levels in Historical South Central lay far outside the county wide standards. Many attribute this to the rate of poverty in the district. Childhood Resilience - Sociologists have divided the child population into three groups based on the populations views of education, likelihood of gang violence involvement, and overall goals and aspirations based on family life.

Work Cited

5 percent of the child population is resilient. This means that no matter what difficulties they face, these children will go to school, continue to college and find a career.

85 percent of the child population are at risk. This means these kids have not decided where their life will go. Troy Camp targets this population of students, encouraging them to pursue higher education and supplying them with the role-models and tools they need.

10 percent of the child population is already involved or has been tapped for future gang participation.
