Way Out West Festival for Children | Wednesday 10 to Saturday 13 July

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is proud to present its annual Western Sydney contemporary arts festival dedicated to children and families during the July school holidays. We work closely with locally and internationally recognised artists and companies to produce a contemporary childrens festival that engages and inspires the imaginations of the whole family. 2013 Way Out West Festival for Children program includes a selection of Australias most outstanding artists presenting quality performances, fantastical films and exciting hands-on art making workshops in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

The 2013 Liverpool Art Society (LAS) Exhibition and Art Award promise to include a diverse range of media and subjects and appeal to all ages and cultural backgrounds. The inclusive nature of the exhibition represents the multiple voices and perspectives of the local community while illustrating the significant number of talented artists that are emerging from the region. The artists in the 22nd Annual Mil-Pra Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG) Exhibition and Art Award responded to the theme Stories from the Bush. The theme intends to provide engaging discourse surrounding issues that concern Aboriginal communities. Stories from the Bush acknowledges the stories from local and broader country and supports positive future development of Aboriginal culture through the visual arts.

CUSP: Designing into the Next Decade

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is pleased to be a host venue for the national touring exhibition, CUSP: Designing into the Next Decade developed byObject: Australian Design Centre. CUSP presents a creative program exploring design as a human-centred approach that can enrich the experience of life for individuals, organisations and communities. In recent years, design has increasingly found application beyond the scope of aesthetics and products. It is also being understood as a way of thinking that has the ability to positively shape our future. Ranging from architecture to fashion, object, interactive, system, robotics and sound design, this program will feature twelve visionary Australian designerswho have the potential to influence lifestyle, learning and cultural change in the decade ahead.

Pacifica Navigation Next:2013

In recognition of the achievements and talents of local students, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is proud to present Next:2013, the second annual exhibition of visual arts works from HSC students. The exhibition will showcase a selection of artworks produced by students, from schools in the Liverpool community, for their Year 12 Body of Work. This years Pacific program and festival will look at the contemporary and traditional science of Navigation coupled with the social mapping of Pacific cultures. Contemporary artists have been invited to respond to collections from museums, identify and consult community historians about family, country knowledge and heritage, as well as celebrate ancestral past and future journeys. Pacifica Navigation will also highlight significant travelling exhibitions from City Gallery New Zealand and includes artists such as Lindah Lepou, Ngaahina Hohaia and Israel Tangaloa Birch. Notions of social mapping will explore how navigation has been integral to our understanding of ancient history, gender and sexuality, health and well-being, identity and fashion, migration and globablisation. Artists include, Sam Tupou, Brian Fuata, and Daniel Boyd. Come to Casula Powerhouse for an exclusive excursion day just for primary school students. Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre has a series of syllabus-based theatre workshops in our Theatre Excursion Packages. Please contact the Education Officer for more information, or to make a booking thats tailored to your schools needs. Workshops run for two hours each and can be booked any time during the school year. Casula Powerhouse Arts Centres Blockbuster suite of exhibitions

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centres summer blockbuster will present a suite of exhibitions which explore the concept of wrapping, whether it be a rock star in leather, a soprano in a wig or a eucalyptus tree bound by tarpaulin. Enraptured features: The Art of Costuming: Costumes from Opera Australia: Take a unique and intimate look at what goes on behind the scenes of an opera production, from the perspective of its costume and wig designers and makers. Tony Mott Rock Photos: Tony Mott is one of, if not the, worlds leading music photographers. His portraits show music artists in both intimate and staged environments and his work ideally communicates the diverse and fascinating ways in which costume is used by musical artists. Christo: John Kaldor Family Collection artist room: Christo is one of the worlds greatest and most enduring contemporary artists, having practiced for over half a century. Infamous for his wrapped works, Christo, along with life-long partner Jeanne-Claude, has made his mark all over the world by wrapping its most famous, and obscure, monuments and landmarks.

Music & Movement

Get your students moving, singing and dancing in this fast paced and energetic workshop. Students will be introduced to dance and music, and gain skills in coordination, balance, singing, creativity, listening, rhythm, self-confidence and body awareness.

Introduction to Theatre & Performance

Give your students an inspiring introduction to theatre in this engaging and dynamic workshop which will cover role playing, improvisation, stage presence, blocking and character development.

Anti-bullying drama workshops

The anti-bullying workshops aim to encourage students to investigate the serious subject of bullying in a relaxed and informal environment. Students will be instilled with a heightened awareness of bullying, in all its forms, discuss ways of tackling bullying, and will realise the negative effects of bullying on their peers.

We have a variety of excursion packages, centred on our year-long program of temporary exhibitions, to suit your schools needs. These packages and programs can also be tailored to your students requirements through consultation with Education staff. Self-tour: FREE. Emily Eyefinger is an exciting story of adventurous heroine, Emily, who was born with an extraordinary gift, an eye on the end of her finger. Visual Arts Practical Workshops

We provide a variety of visual arts practical workshops including printmaking, painting, ceramics, found object sculpture, sketching and ceramics in the Clay House. Each workshop is two hours duration. Cost is $12/student, per workshop, with a minimum of 15 students.

Subsidised excursions for PSP schools

At Casula Powerhouse we offer subsidised excursions and theatre tickets for PSP schools. Subsidy is dependent on availability and excursion type. We can also assist with the cost of transport (subject to availability and consultation with Education Officer).

Stories Then and Now

Performance 4a presents inspiring Asian Australian theatre in a revelatory storytelling performance. Six storytellers delve into their familys past to uncover the threads that lead to their lives in contemporary Australia. War robs a father of his children, obliterates a young womans village, forces another into a hasty marriage and thwarts a young mans aspirations. Yet they persist to reach new homes, new lives and a future for their children. Hear about the heartbroken dancer who becomes a burlesque showgirl; the busy young professional who outsources her quest for a husband; the traveller who finally comes to terms with her cultural homeland; and the charmed life of a child growing up in a family of entertainers. Secondary Design Study Lab

The Secondary Design Study Lab is a must for Years 10 and 11 students who would like to discover current thinking and ideas in design and seek inspiration. Students will listen to designers speak about their processes and ideas, participate in a workshop with them and experiment with concepts from Cusp. Students and teachers will come away from the day with a greater understanding of the design process, inspiration for their Major Project for Design and Technology, HSC Body of Work or other major projects in Graphics, Visual Design or Textiles and Design. Drama Professional Development Day for Secondary School Teachers

This is a practical workshop that focuses on improvisation and play building. Teachers will be introduced to new exercises, games and techniques of play building and improvisation which they can take back to the classroom and share with their students. Theatre Excursion Packages

Pacifica emPowerment

High schools are invited to attend Casula Powerhouse Art Centres Pacifica emPowerment days, where they will receive valuable information from a range of sources about the exhibition, as well as important social and cultural issues. The day includes: Cyber Safety Talk: the Australian Federal Police will be holding talks regarding cyber safety. Students will be able to listen to the latest cyber issues (such as criminal activity, relationship failure and negative social impact) affecting them today and how they can be handled. Young People & the Law: The NSW Department of Attorney General & Justice will be providing legal information sessions to improve young peoples understanding of their legal rights, how to access the Departments services, and how to take measures to prevent getting involved in the legal system. A Streetcar Named Desire

This performance will be Auslan interpreted. A Streetcar Named Desire tells the story of Blanche Dubois, a Southern Belle whose pretensions to virtue and culture only thinly mask alcoholism and delusions of grandeur. Her poise is an illusion she presents to shield others (but most of all herself) from her reality, and an attempt to continue to make herself attractive to new male suitors. Blanches depressing and heartbreaking past leads her to her sister Stella, in a poor but charming apartment in the French Quarter of New Orleans. However, her destructive relationship with Stellas husband triggers a wave of emotions which aim to break her. They will learn about the colour spectrum of light, how the control systems work, and how to rig, patch, flash and focus lighting for theatre shows. Students will also learn about the audible spectrum of sound, how a live mix works, and how sound travels from the stage to the speakers. In recognition of the achievements and talents of local students, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is proud to present Next:2013, the second annual exhibition of visual arts works from HSC students. The exhibition will showcase a selection of artworks produced by students, from schools in the Liverpool community, for their Year 12 Body of Work. Next:2013 Artists Talks

12 & 14 December
Come view the Next:2013 exhibition and listen to the artists talk about their artworks, methodologies and inspirations. Artist talks will be held on Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 December from 10am 11am. For large school bookings, contact the Education Officer.

Visual Arts Practical Workshops

Spray Art Workshops

We provide a variety of visual arts practical workshops including printmaking, painting, ceramics and sketching. Cost is $15/student with a minimum of 20 students. Three hour spray art or stencil workshops are conducted on the Casula Tanks with a local street artist. Cost is $400 including materials with a maximum of 25 students.

Exhibition Excursion Packages

We have a variety of excursion packages, centred on our year-long program of temporary exhibitions, to suit your schools needs. These packages and programs can also be tailored to your students requirements through consultation with the Education Officer. Self-tour: FREE. Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is open every day from 10am-5pm. Entry is free and all groups are welcome. Package A: 45-minute guided tour | gold coin donation from each student Package B: 90 minutes duration | $4/student with a $40 minimum booking Includes a 45-minute guided tour, a worksheet and educator to engage in the exhibition content with students. Package C: 110 minutes duration | $7/student with a $70 minimum booking Includes a 45-minute guided tour and a practical workshop. Package D: 150 minutes duration | $10/student with a $100 minimum booking Includes a 45-minute guided tour, a worksheet and educator to engage in the exhibition content with students, and a practical workshop.

Subsidised excursions for PSP schools At Casula Powerhouse we offer subsidised excursions and theatre tickets for PSP schools. Subsidy is dependent on availability and excursion type. We can also assist with the cost of transport (subject to availability and consultation with Education Officer).
