The market research institute Ceresana forecasts market value of the worldwide urea market to increase to around US$96 billion in 2019 at dynamic growth rates. Growing population increases the demand for foodstuffs. As less acreage is dedicated to crop cultivation, yield per hectare has to be increased. Therefore, more urea is used as fertilizer. Ceresana Research forecasts urea demand to rise at an average annual rate of 3.2% over the next years. Asia-Pacific already is the largest sales market for urea, accounting for almost two thirds of total demand, followed by North America. In the next eight years, Asia-Pacific will gain additional market shares. Market researchers at Ceresana expect populous countries such as China and India to expand their position in the worldwide urea market.

Changes in regional demand will also have an effect on the production structure of manufacturers. The global urea capacity of approximately 184 million tonnes is anticipated to be expanded by 71 million tonnes in 2019. Almost 50% of these new capacities will be built in the Asia-Pacific region. Another major producing region is the Middle East, due to a number of natural gas resources that offer ideal conditions for production. This worldwide most comprehensive report analyzes how the use of urea in agriculture on one hand and industry on the other will develop. A large part of urea consumption takes place in agriculture, where it is used as fertilizer. Industry mainly utilizes urea for producing urea-formaldehyde resins and melamine. Innovative application area with dynamic growth is the reduction of nitrogen by the urea solution

AdBlue, which is used in utility vehicles in Western Europe in particular. Given the increased application of AdBlue in industrialized countries, their urea demand is likely to increase in the following years. Development in the agricultural sector, on the other hand, is mainly supported by developing and emerging countries, as Ceresana expects a rapid growth in population and more intensive cultivation of arable land.

2.1.1 Demand and Revenue
Worldwide demand for urea was X tonnes in 2003. Following an average growth of X% per year, demand rose to around X tonnes in 2011. Two thirds of the worldwide urea demand in 2011 came from the region Asia-Pacific (Graph. In total, around X tonnes of urea were consumed in that region. Until 2019, we forecast an increase to around X tonnes, corresponding to about X% of the global market.

Graph: Worldwide urea demand from 2003 to 2019 split by region Asia-Pacific was leading in worldwide demand in 2011, followed by North America with X tonnes, the Middle East with around X tonnes, South America with X tonnes, and Western Europe with X tonnes. The three remaining regions only consumed a comparatively low amount of urea. We expect the highest average growth rates for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Urea consumption is likely to increase at X% and X% per year respectively in these two regions. As total acreage decreases, cultivation has to become more intensive. An increased application of fertilizers ensues. Given the high effectiveness of urea in rice crops, we expect the strongest increases in the regions cultivating rice. Western Europe will

Middle East - Production

From 2003 to 2011, production volume in the Middle East increased at X% per year to an absolute value of X tonnes (Graph). Until 2019, we expect an increase in production volume to just below X tonnes. Compared to 2011, this constitutes a growth rate of, on average, X% per year. Share of global production will decline from X% to X% in that period. Nevertheless, this region will remain the second largest producer. Because of its natural gas and oil reserves, urea can be produced at low costs. The region is a net-exporter of urea given its high production volume.

Pakistan was the region's major producer in 2011, with a production volume of around X tonnes. Saudi-Arabia reached an output of around X tonnes, Iran around X. Regarding other countries of this region, major production sites can be found in Oman, Qatar, and in Kuwait. Until 2019, we forecast the highest growth rates of an annual X% for Iran. A number of large scale project are planned in this country during the next few years, causing production capacity to almost triple.

3.3.3.1 USA Demand and Revenues
In 2011, the agricultural sector consumed around X tonnes of urea, industry around X tonnes. We expect demand for urea as fertilizer to increase to X tonnes by 2019. The agricultrual sector in the USA is one of the most productive in the world. Due to many large farms with a corresponding acreage and utilization of modern equipment and agrochemicals, economies of scale can be exploited. A range of climatic and geographic conditions can be found in the USA. While the Northern part belongs to the temperate zones, the Southern states enjoy a subtropical climate. As a consequence, various regions specialize in certain crops, such as the Corn Belt and the Wheat belt in the Midwest. Due to the size of the country, significant discrepancies typical for a continental climate occur, especially in the central areas. Additionally, the USA are often victim of natural disasters that destroy harvests. For industrial applications, we forecast a significant increase of demand at an AAGR of X% to X tonnes. Major branch is the production of urea-formaldehyde resins with a consumption of around X tonnes. About X tonnes were used in melamine production in 2011. Utilization to reduce nitrogen oxides in utility vehicles (AdBlue) consumed around X tonnes, but this application area is a primarily European one. For the next eight years, we forecast an average increase of urea demand of X% per year in this sector. Other fields of application in the industrial sector are medicine and cosmetics.
