C Landscape Design
caught the eye of
HGTV producers and
was recently the featured land-
scape installer for a commer-
cial promoting Lowes Home
Improvement Centers. Work-
ing with the Cousins on Call, a
group of DIY gurus, DC
Landscape owner Dennis
Coyle became inspired to dab-
ble further into home improve-
ment television. Knowing he
could offer homeowners
uniquely educational and
inspiring home and garden
advice, Coyle teamed up with
Sleepless Pictures to film the pilot
for his landscaping show.
What I do for a living is
not just a career, but a type of
love. The horticulture and
design aspects allow me to create
projects that leave an impres-
sion and last for years, said
Coyle.
Coyle has been studying
plants for 10 years and is familiar
with almost all perennials,
annuals, trees and shrubs.
Landscaping is truly a sci-
ence, and must be approached
with care and precision, he
said. If you just buy a plant
and stick it in the ground, its
probably not going to live. You
need to take care of it you
need to properly install it with
topsoil, peat moss and fertilizer.
Coyle has excellent relation-
ships with many local growers
and garden centers. Over 99 per-
cent of plants installed by him
live, yet his company still
offers a one-year warranty, just
in case.
Customers feel at ease trust-
ing DC Landscape Design to
make their homes and gardens
beautiful all year long. The
company currently has weekly
maintenance contracts in 10
different towns. My company
takes much pride in every
landscape we do. No job is
ever too small or too big for
us, said Coyle.

engineering. So says a survey
from the National Association
of Colleges and Employers,
which notes that computer
engineering majors earned the
top spot with an average start-
ing salary of $70,400 for gradu-
ates who finished school in
2012. Chemical engineering
majors came in second with an
average starting salary of
$66,400, while computer sci-

third. The NACE salary survey
relied on information from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, the
United States Census Bureau

science, the survey, which
examined starting salaries for
new graduates in more than 90
fields of study, found that

were the only majors outside

Did you know?
T
his year, the RRR
Recognition of Re-
sponsibility Ritual
took place on June 16 and it
was not missed in the
Charnet home. I solidified
my right to receive the ritual
way back on July 24, 1988.
Since then, there have been
three other rights granted to
me that elevated the intensi-
ty of the ritual experience for
2013. For many years, my
wife and I were the only ones
participating in the rituals,
but as the children grew
older the celebration date
each year became much more
important. My baby, Sam,
just celebrated his Bar
Mitzvah, which marked his
religious passage into adult-
hood, and with that level of
maturity he also understands
RRR Day. The other kids
also never forget the signifi-
cance of RRR Day, and if
they do, their Mom reminds
them well in advance of the
importance and meaning of
the day.
Yesterday, Sam handed
me an RRR card that had a
black-and-white picture of
an older man sitting on a
stool milking his cow. The
inside caption, written by
Sam, read: Go ahead, Dad.
Youve earned the right to
milk it for the day! The card
accompanied a specially
designed back scratcher,
which is essential to someone
of my vintage who lacks the
flexibility to scratch those
hard-to-reach places in the
center of the back. How did
he know?
One of my kids created a
homemade card for me that
that offered a foot massage in
recognition of the special
day. Along with that was a
CD of music from the early
1970s, which became the-
matic with the other gifts I
received: CDs from the
ancient genres of music from
the late 70s and early 80s.
The artists were unimpor-
tant. (Their choices of whom
they thought I liked and lis-
tened to three-and-a-half
decades ago were interest-
ing!) But the thought and
remembrance of RRR Day
were all that mattered.
I remember the transi-
tion from being single to get-
ting married and being a cou-
ple. It was an amazing time.
My wife and I were both
working together to build our
dream, and we always had
money in our pockets for
whatever we desired. A few
years later my status matured
to parent with the birth of
my daughter, Chelsie. With
that came expenses for baby
furniture, clothes and dia-
pers, but most importantly,
for college funding. Things
were tight for a while. Then
the first of my three sons,
Zachary, was born, escalating
us from parents of one to a
family of four. This was a
major increase in responsibil-
ity. Now we were responsible
to house, feed, clothe and
educate two children, while
maintaining our standard of
living, hopefully to escalate
it while simultaneously
preparing for our retirements.
Wow, the pressure was
mounting now! I immediate-
ly began a second college
funding account, as well as
added to my already robust
life insurance and disability
insurance programs. Vaca-
tions were scaled down a lit-
tle bit and even omitted, but
when I put my head on the
pillow every night, there was
sincere peace of mind, for if
something negative were to
happen to either Terry or

Celebrate the Recognition of Responsibility Ritual By Mark Charnet
continued on next page
me, the other would have
been financially prepared to
handle it.
The transition to family
of five, then six, was relatively
easy. There are 12 years sepa-
rating my eldest from my
youngest, so the older two
were instrumental in helping
us with the younger ones. I
heard myself once praying
that not only should Chelsie
get a drivers license, but that
she would be an excellent and
safe driver, too. Terry and I
needed some transportation
help. My prayer was answered.
The monthly college savings
programs were eventually
increased to four, and we insti-
tuted retirement programs for
all the kids. Terry and I
increased our retirement fund-
ing, especially after the stock
market crashes and correc-
tions of 1987, 1990, 1994,
2000-2001 and 2002, to take
advantage of the ultimate law
of investing. (Buy low and
sell high!)
We were fortunate that
when college and grad school
first came upon us, the col-
lege funding I prepared for
was unneeded so the funds
could be used for other
meaningful purposes. I con-
tinue to put away for Jack
and Sam, now 15 and 13,
with the hope that these
funds may also be used for
other purposes, like their first
house or additions to their
retirement plans. It is never
too soon to plan for your
retirement or your childrens
retirement!
Yes, this past weekend
was Triple R Day in the
Charnet household, known
by most of America as
Fathers Day! Im having a
little fun with you by the title
of this column, but isnt it
accurate? Fathers and moth-
ers both make huge sacrifices
to start and raise a family.
The financial burdens alone
are enormous, and there are
stresses and responsibilities
on top of that. However, the
rewards are amazing and well
worth the sacrifices and price
we pay. I have clients who
never had children and
though in some cases they
have amassed a greater for-
tune, in virtually every case,
they would trade it away for
children of their own to nur-
ture, to love and to dote over.
And the grandchildren they
do not have, they would give
the rest of their fortune away
to have that, too.
Though my column is
financial in nature, it is
important to take some space
every now and then to recog-
nize why it is important to do
the right things, financially
speaking. Advancement and
well-being of our family is
the foremost conclusion I
come to, followed by philan-
thropic endeavors as a very
close second. For the father
in your life, I hope you
called, visited or recognized
him this past Fathers Day. If
that was impossible, I hope
you had the good fortune to
recognize a father you admire
for a job well done. Men are
fragile and emotional beings,
though they hate to (or
wont) admit it. They require

H
ouse cleaning is a
chore few people rel-
ish. House cleaning
can be monotonous and time-
consuming. But ignoring
cleaning tasks may leave you
with a much larger mess to
tackle.
Cleaning does not have
to be such a difficult job.
There are a number of time-
saving strategies to keep the
mess to a minimum and keep
your weekend afternoons free
from all-day cleaning mara-
thons.
Do the dishes after every
meal. A sink full of dishes can
make the kitchen look like a
mess, and letting dishes pile up
increases the risk of an insect
infestation. Although it may
seem like a chore, keeping on
top of dishes actually reduces
your workload. If youre lucky
enough to have an automatic
dishwasher, then load dishes
directly into the dishwasher
instead of putting dirty items
into the sink.
Protect your microwave.
The inside of the microwave
tends to get dirty rather quick-
ly. Heating up snacks or quick
meals may result in spill-overs
or splatter. To cut down on
cleaning time, stack several
paper towels on the turntable.
Should a spill occur, simply
discard the top paper towel for
an easy clean-up.
Switch your soap. Gly-
cerin or liquid soaps do not
have traditional binders that
are in many bar soaps.
Without the binders, which
are the primary cause of soap
scum, you will have to con-
tend with much less soap scum
in showers and sinks. To fur-
ther cut down on soap scum,
use a small, flexible squeegee
to wipe down tile walls and
glass doors after each shower.
Work from the top down.
Dust and dirt settles at the
lowest levels. Avoid messing
up what you have just cleaned
by beginning any cleaning task
high up and moving down-
ward. Therefore, dust shelves
and cobwebs from ceiling cor-
ners first, then tackle tables
and other surfaces before ulti-
mately cleaning the floors.
Concentrate on one
room at a time. Some people
suffer from cleaning attention
deficit disorder. This means
theyll begin one task and then
go into another room for
something and start a new
task, and so on. Focus on one
room at a time to save time.
You will do a more thorough
job with less frustration.
Establish a drop zone.
Foyers tend to accumulate a
lot of clutter. Organize the
space so youre less tempted to
drop items as soon as you come
in. Keep the recycling bin (or
shredder) handy for dealing
with junk mail. Have a coat
rack for hats, coats and
umbrellas. Keep a basket avail-
able so you can transport items
that belong in other rooms in
the house.
Do laundry every day.
Invest in a hamper that
enables you to sort clothing
into different compartments,
including lights, darks and del-
icates. This way the sorting is
already done when it comes
time for washing, then aim to
do a load a day so that youre
not faced with 100 pounds of
laundry come the weekend.
Rely on baking soda and
vinegar as cleaning products.
These kitchen staples are the
workhorses of many cleaning
projects. A mix of baking soda
and vinegar can dislodge a
clogged drain and be added to
a wash to freshen towels and
linens. A paste of baking soda
can often scour tough stains,
like marker, while vinegar has
been known to neutralize pet
odors from accidents.
Think outside the box. A
can of Coca-Cola can be effec-
tive at cleaning the ring in the
toilet. An unsweetened pack-
age of Kool-Aid brand lemon-
ade can be used to freshen and
clean an empty dishwasher.
The citric acid will scour the
inside and get rid of any scal-
ing or hard water stains.
Cleaning is a task that
may not be enjoyable, but it
is a necessary evil of healthy
living. Keeping on top of the
mess can save time in the
long run.

S
ummer is a time for fun
swimming, picnics,
baseball games, and
playing with your dog in your
freshly mowed lawn. The
only downside to summer is
the heat! For us humans its
easy to keep a tall glass of
lemonade around or crank
the air conditioning up to
keep us cool during these
months.
But our pets dont often
have it so easy. It can be mis-
erable for your dog to be
stuck in the heat for long
periods of time with no way
to keep cool. While its obvi-
ously preferable to keep your
best friend indoors when the
weather gets hot, sometimes
its not practical.
If you absolutely have to
keep your dog outside during
these hot months, then there
are a few simple things you
can do to keep your dog safe
and cool. You dont want to
forget these tips; they are
absolutely essential.
First off, make sure your
dog has plenty of shade. You
can build a simple pavilion
out of scrap wood and a tarp
if there is no other shade
source. Shade can make a big
difference!
Also, make sure your
dog has lots of cool water.
They make great water bowls
now that can be hooked up
to a hose and that continual-
ly refills the bowl when the
water level drops below a cer-
tain point. Its great because
your dog will never run out
of cool water!
Another super way to
keep your dog cool is to give
him access to a kiddie pool
filled with water, but this is
only for dogs that like the
water and are able to swim.
Remember: safety first! Dont
do this if you have a small,
short-legged dog that could
drown in the pool.
Finally, and one of the
best ways to keep your pet
cool during the summer, you
can get your dog a cooling
dog bed (also known as a dog
cooling mat). This is a great
way to make sure your dog
stays comfortable in that blis-
tering summer heat. And if
you are looking for a cheap
dog bed, a
cooling dog
bed or dog
cooling mat
usually does
not cost too
much and
works great.
They require
no electricity;
they work by
simply dis-
persing the water inside the
dog cooling mat when dogs
lie down, providing a cool,
dry place to sleep. Theyre
made out of a tough nylon
material so that claws wont
puncture when the dog walks
across them. Cooling dog
beds are a great way to keep
your favorite pet from suffer-
ing in the hot summer sun.
These dog cooling mats are
also great for dogs that have
just gotten back from playing
outside or from taking a dog-
gie walk.
Remember to always fol-
low these tips when your dog
is outside in the summer. In
the end, however, the best
way to keep your dog cool is
to keep it indoors when the
heat is too much!

A
ccording to Calvin
Coolidge, Patriot-
ism is easy to under-
stand in America it means
looking out for yourself by
looking out for your country.
In other words, whatever we
do to bolster our national
image and integrity will, in
turn, help us in our own lives.
Merriam-Webster defines
patriotism as love for or devo-
tion to ones country.
When I surveyed friends
and family and asked them to
give examples of patriotism,
most answers fit into two cat-
egories. The first set of exam-
ples included heroism in times
of trouble and tragedy, like the
troops in our armed forces
who put their lives on the line
every day, or the tremendous
national response in the days
after 9/11.
The second category of
examples included shows of
enthusiasm and love in times
of happiness, like the national
fanfare surrounding our World
Cup soccer team, or festive
Fourth of July celebrations,
from small backyard barbe-
ques to huge galas.
Without patriotism, our
country would be a boring
mass of people who never got
excited about any national
competition. Holidays would
be dull and dreary, if not com-
pletely eliminated due to lack
of participation. Support for
our soldiers and other heroes
would be limited to small
pockets of family and friends.
We would lose our identity,
our pride and the very essence
of what makes our country
America.
Does patriotism still
matter? You bet it does!
Patriotism gives us hope. It
helps us remember where
weve been, helps us celebrate
where we are, and gets us
excited about where were
going. It gives us a sense of
uniqueness, while unifying us
as one people. So fly your
flags, support your troops, play
your baseball and eat your
apple pie! Let your patriotism
ring throughout this majestic
country we call the United
States of America!

H
ome health care
allows one to receive
quality individualized
services in the comfort of his or
her home. Recipients of home
health care include the elderly,
those living with an illness and
those recovering from an acci-
dent or surgery. More families
are choosing home care as the
preferred way of care for their
loved ones for various reasons:
1. It is delivered at home.
There are positive feelings that
all of us associate with being
home. Our home is our castle,
our refuge from the storm.
Whether were feeling sick or
well, we enjoy the sanctity of
our residences and the joy of
being with our loved ones.
2. It provides the elderly with a
sense of independence. No one
wants to feel totally dependent
or helpless. With some assis-
tance, seniors receiving home
care can continue to function
as viable members of society.
3. Home care can be safer.
Statistics show it is not uncom-
mon for patients to develop
new health problems or risk
infection as a result of being
hospitalized. Some of these
risks are eliminated when care
is given at home.
4. Home care allows the maxi-
mum amount of freedom for
the individual. A hospital or
nursing home can be a regi-
mented, regulated environ-
ment. Upon admission to
either, an individual is required
to surrender a significant por-
tion of his or her rights. Such
sacrifices are not required with
home care, where flexibility is
key.
5. Home care is personalized,
tailored to the needs of each
individual. It is delivered on a
one-to-one basis and involves
the individual and the family in
the care that is delivered.
6. Home care is less expensive
than other forms of care. Home
care costs only one-tenth as
much as hospitalization and
one-fourth as much as nursing
home placement. By bringing
health services home, the
patient also does not generate
additional room-and-board
expenses.

utdoor activities are
even more fun when
the weather cooper-
ates. Pleasant temperatures
and conditions can entice
people who are normally con-
tent to stay indoors to venture
outside and enjoy the fresh air.
There are a number of activi-
ties, from cooking to enter-
taining, that are ideal for sum-
mer fun. But what about
watching a movie?
Although the number of
drive-in movie theaters may
be on the decline, that doesnt
have to keep movie buffs from
enjoying a film with friends
and family al fresco. Certain
parks, municipal recreation
centers and businesses host
movie nights under the stars
for large groups in the sum-
mertime. However, home-
owners can host an outdoor
movie night right in their own
backyards.
Establish the screen
spot well in advance. A few
different scenarios can make
watching a movie more enjoy-
able. You will need a large
enough surface to act as the
movie screen. If yours is a
light-colored home, you can
project the image directly on a
patch of siding that is not bro-
ken by windows or doors.
Otherwise, you will need to
erect a tarp, sheet, shower cur-
tain, or an actual screen to
serve as the backdrop. Test out
the movie-watching experi-
ence prior to inviting people
over to ensure that the movie
is clearly visible and is not
marred by street lights or
obstructions like overhanging
branches.
Invest in a projector. In
order to project the movie
onto the big screen, you will
need a projector. Electronics
stores sell projectors that can
hook up to everything from
DVD and Blu-ray players to
Smartphones. Some are small

enough to travel in your pock-
et. If a friend has a projector,
you can also ask to borrow it.
The higher you can mount
the projector, the better it will
be to avoid picture blockage.
Also, keep in mind that the
bigger the screen the higher
the resolution projector you
will need. A high definition
projector is your best bet,
especially one with an HDMI
input.
Have a sound system.
Dont skimp on a sound sys-
tem; otherwise youll have a
big, impressive movie picture
without adequate sound. You
can only turn up some projec-
tors so much before experi-
encing distortion, so it is best
to purchase some speakers so
you can project the sound to
guests who are sitting around
the yard. A stereo receiver or
an old sound system that you
can buy on an auction site or
garage sale should suffice.
Create the theater.
Theaters are built with stag-
gered seating in which seats
are set on a gradually increas-
ing angle. This may not be
possible in a yard unless you
have a nicely sloping hill.
Place blankets or sheets down
front for children or shorter
adults and then place folding
chairs for adults. You can also
opt for guests to bring their
own chairs if you do not have
enough.
Have movie snacks on
hand. Snack foods, especially
finger foods, work best for out-
door movie nights. Give
everyone a paper lunch bag
they can fill up with snacks
from a snack table and then
take with them to their seats.
Have a cooler filled with bev-
erages in close proximity to
your seats. If youre creative,
you can tie in the snacks to
the theme of the movie. For
example, if youre watching a
film with dinosaurs, then
serve dinosaur-shaped gummy
fruits.
Plan for an intermission.
Pause the movie halfway so
guests can stand up and
stretch or visit the restroom.
This also enables
them to refill any
drinks or snacks.
Give neighbors a
heads-up. As a cour-
tesy to your neigh-
bors, let them know
you will be having a
movie night in the
yard, and for a few
hours there may be
more noise than
usual. Try to time the
viewing so it will not stray too
far into sleeping hours when
neighbors may be disturbed.
Better yet, invite them to the
festivities.

E
xcitement is mounting
as beautiful buildings
emerge where aban-
doned buildings once stood in
the Haskell section of
Wanaque. With units in
Buildings 1 and 2 of the new
Parkside at Wanaque develop-
ment slotted for closings over
the next few weeks, that
excitement can be felt by
everyone involved.
Our buyers in Buildings
1 and 2 made a commitment
to purchase these homes from
floor plans, artist renderings
and option samples. Now that
their closing dates are fast
approaching, they are able to
see the finished product, and
they are thrilled, said Marie
Episale, manager of Century

listing agency for the Parkside
at Wanaque development.
The local community is
just as excited. Drive by the
Parkside at Wanaque con-
struction site located at the

Fourth Avenue on any given
day and you will most likely
notice observers on the out-
skirts of the job site. Recently
a small group of local residents
had assembled to watch the
progress. One of them com-
mented, These are just beau-
tiful. We are all so excited to
welcome Parkside to our
neighborhood.
All of the new construc-
tion sales staff at Century 21
Crest Real Estate have enjoyed
partnering with Greentree
Development Group to offer
purchasers the best in quality
and service, said Episale. Our
buyers know that they are get-
ting a beautiful quality product
from a group that has dedicated
themselves to offering the best
product out there, and from the
first moment they walk
through the doors of our sales
center, they receive personal-
ized service from a team of
experienced professional real-
tors and new construction spe-
cialists. Our buyers are really
getting the best of both
worlds.
All the hard work and
dedication have paid off. With
only 18 out of 88 units still
available, the quality of prod-
uct and service is evident.
Parkside at Wanaque pro-
vides luxury living at affordable
prices to its purchasers offer-
ing custom kitchens with gran-
ite countertops, stainless
kitchen appliances, hardwood
flooring, carpeted bedrooms,
and unbelievable appliance
and lighting packages. Prices
start under $250,000 for a two-
bedroom, two-and-a-half bath,
two-floor townhome with one-
car garage.
The sales and design cen-
ter is located at 142 Route 23
in Pompton Plains and is open
Tuesday through Thursday 6-8
pm. There are open houses
every weekend from 10am-4pm
and scheduled appointments

D
uring the dark days
of the Civil War,
Lincolns Secretary of
War, Edwin Stanton, was frus-
trated by the Presidents policy
of trying to win over his adver-
saries. Why do you waste so
much time trying to make
friends with your enemies
when you should be destroying
them? he demanded angrily.
Lincoln replied, If I turn an
enemy into a friend, havent I
destroyed that enemy?
What brilliant and simple
wisdom. Instead of waging a
battle that consumes our
resources in an effort to make
the enemies waste theirs, find
areas of synergy and grow
stronger together.
We can apply this con-
cept to our daily lives. Some
our most powerful adversaries
and allies are the habits that
govern our behavior. There are
habits that are beneficial and
those that are destructive. We
all have both. They can either
serve us or we can be doomed
to serve them; there is no third
option.
Try taking a habit that is
harmful such as interrupting
other people while they are
speaking and look to
replace it with a useful habit of
success instead. We interject
because we arent listening.
Practice effective listening and
you will both curtail the bad
habit while reinforcing the
successful one.
