Tell Tales

The Fabulous Fourth is here

Welcome to the big 4th of July weekend! The Beacon is being published a day earlier than normal this week. By the time you read this, the Sesqui-Centennial Celebration of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg will be over. It is amazing to realize just how many men were killed or wounded in the three days of carnage outside the small town of Gettysburg, PA. When Abraham Lincoln visited and dedicated the cemetery there, he delivered perhaps the greatest Presidential speech of all time. He started it by saying: Four score and seven years ago, our forefathers brought forth a new nation That was in recognition of the 4th of July, 1776. Much blood has been spilled, but we are still a free people thanks to the courage of those great men in Philadelphia 237 years ago. So, enjoy the fireworks and the fun. Just please remember why we celebrate.

In the same year, he then took a job for Western-Southern Life Insurance Company until he retired after 33 years in Sept. 1989. He remained married to Betty for 52 years until her death on Nov. 29, 2008. Reuben and Betty moved to Grants Lick, KY, in 1962 in which they became active members of Plum Creek Christian Church. He served as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He also was a softball coach/ player (pitcher) for the church team. He started the churchs benevolence team which served the local community with food and clothing for those who are in need. Devotional writing along with writing poetry was something he enjoyed to do and share with others. Hobbies included golfing, softball, bowling, euchre and watching the Reds and UK teams play ball. Survivors include his sons David (Paula) McCain, Daniel (Kristin) McCain and his daughters Karen (Kevin) Mack, Amy (Jeffrey) Schmidt and Rebecca (James) White and his brother James Richard (Marilyn) McCain and 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Salvation Army programs

Live Local...Bank Local...Shop Local

Invest in your community and we can invest in you. Three Locations to better serve you.
The employees of The Marblehead Bank would like express our appreciation for each and every one of you that have chosen to Live Local, Bank Local and Shop Local. The challenging economic and regulatory environment we have all experienced over the last five years has resulted in some local banks closing branches or merging into large institutions. However, with your continued loyal support of The Marblehead Bank, we will work diligently to remain a strong independent local community bank. We pledge that we will continue to offer you the personalized service that you have come to enjoy over our 106 years of continuous operation. We hope you have enjoyed our 10 weekly ads that have featured the beautiful community in which we have chosen to live. If you would like to review this series, they will be available soon on our web site at www.marbleheadbank.com. Please accept our personal invitation to visit our bank. We are looking forward to meeting with you soon.

THANK YOU!

On June 19th, 37 children got up early, loaded onto a chartered bus filled with snacks & movies, and headed to Camp NEOSA in Carrollton, OH, for five days filled with swimming, canoeing, hiking, outside sport activities, singing, role-playing and arts & crafts. Camp NEOSA (Northeast Ohio Salvation Army) is one of the many programs offered by The Salvation Army-Port Clinton Service Unit. Camp NEOSA provides an atmosphere where campers learn skills for developing physically, socially and spiritually. The camp is aimed at helping campers learn good health habits and provides an opportunity for them to con-

tribute to and receive from a group living experience. Campers participate in activities that stimulate creativity and foster independence. The Port Clinton Service Unit has provided this opportunity to approximately 35-40 campers each year for the past sixteen years. Currently, the Salvation Army is taking applications for the Tools for School program and needs bell ringers for their Christmas in July campaign, July 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28. To volunteer or for more information, contact Maureen Saponari at 419-732-ARMY (2769) or stop in at 1854 E. Perry Street,Suite # 800, Port Clinton.

A reunion 100 years in the making

History was made Friday at Cedar Point as relatives of college football legends Knute Rockne and Gus Dorais joined park officials to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the perfection of the forward pass on the Cedar Point Beach. In 1913, both Rockne and Dorais worked at Cedar Point and during their free time they practiced the forward pass, an innovation in college football that would help propel Notre Dame over the heavily-favored Army team that fall and into national prominence. Michael Rockne, great grandson of Knute Rockne and Charles Dorais, great grandson of Gus Dorais, reenacted the event at the historic park.

Captain Juls Fishing Report

Organization is the Key to Success

For as long as I can remember, my grandmother used to say, Everything has a place and everything goes in its place. Shes gone now, but those words still echo in my head as if she were saying them to me out loud today. Wait a minute; this is a fishing report column. How will being organized help put more fish in the boat? The answer is simple. It wont. But it will make your time on the water much more enjoyable and stress free. And it will greatly improve your chances of success. For example, lets say you hear them chatting on the marine radio about a lure that is out producing everything else on a particular day. You know you have one on the boat, but cant remember where you put it. If you have to spend a lot of time searching for that lure, then youre wasting time that could be spent with baits in the water catching fish, and your stress levels will rise. Having a plan for the day is also important. Having an idea of where you want to fish and what presentation you plan to use can greatly reduce the frustration of looking out at that big body of water from the boat ramp or marina and asking yourself, Where do I even start? Start by talking to the various bait shops in the area. Going in to a bait shop and buying something as small as a crank bait or candy bar will get you more results than simply calling up and asking where the fish are biting. Use the social media outlets like Facebook to help you. Building a network of friends who fish can help you eliminate a lot of time spent searching for a species of fish that is always moving. However, keep in mind that this is a two way street. Only receiving information but never giving information will reward you with friends unwilling to share with you, and less fish in your livewell. So be organized and be kind, and you will have much success in life and fishing. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@gmail. com, or by phone at 419-835-7347. Her website address is www.julswalleyefishingadventures.com

Wyland to debut new art

Marine life artist and environmentalist Wyland will appear at Put-in-Bays Wyland Gallery during the July 4 holiday weekend in an art showcase expected to be the highlight of the gallerys 2013 summer season. Wyland will be on hand to debut his latest images and meet art lovers from 2-6 p.m. Friday, July 5, and from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at the 495 Catawba Ave. gallery. During Wylands appearance in the Year of the Original, as he defines it, the artist plans to introduce a unique series of museum-framed original drawings on acidfree paper, as well as brilliant paintings and sculptures. He will also create new pieces each day as show attendees watch, and offer insights into his ongoing conservation initiatives. There is a twofold reason for celebration during Wylands Put-in-Bay visit. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Wyland Galleries and July 9 is Wylands birthday, a birth date he shares with actor Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks probably wont be around for the weekends events, but attendees will find a wide variety of star-quality art. The gallery is open throughout the season and features images by Wyland and other leading American artists. For more information, call (419) 2852233 or visit www.wylandkw.com. Dancing with Mayflies

BY JASMINE CUPP The Dancing with Mayflies Art Walk that took place downtown Port Clinton on Thursday, June 27, featured art, music and dancing. Vendors offered art from prints to jewelry. Music from two live bands filled the air with music downtown as people walked about looking at the art. A severe thunderstorm ended the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council sponsored Art Walk a little early, but the gray skies didnt keep people from coming out to dance with the mayflies.

nings and air gun rental is just $5. For more information about the National Match Air Rifle (NMAR) program, click here. Camp Perry History Tours The Ohio National Guard operates Camp Perry and gives periodic tours of the entire camp. Learn about the training site and the many uses and countless men and women who have passed through its gates as soldiers and marksmanship competitors. Camp Perry boasts the largest outdoor rifle range in the world. The firing is conducted in the direction of the open water of Lake Erie, just beyond an earthen berm and the targets. The original land for Camp Perry was purchased in 1906, and the reservation was named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the American naval commander who won the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. During World War I, Camp Perry served as a training center for Army officers and marksmanship instructors. During World War II, Camp Perry served as a POW camp for German and Italian prisoners and hundreds of small hutments built for that purpose remain today. Presidents Rifle Trophy Match Shoot-Off 4 p.m., Monday, July 29th Approximately 1,200 competitors will attempt to win or at least reach the top 100 place finishes in the 2012 Presidents Rifle Trophy Match. The qualifying event is fired with a service rifle - 10 shots standing at 200 yards, 10 shots rapid-fire prone at 300 yards and 10 shots slow-fire prone at 600 yards. The top 20 competitors will line up shoulder to shoulder and fire an additional 10 shots prone, slow fire at 600 yards in front of spectators at the foot of Rodriguez Range, just off the Shooters Memorial Plaza. Each competitors shots will be marked on large scorecards in plain view of spectators who can follow the shoot-off to determine the best of the best. The top 100 will receive special recognition as the Presidents Hundred. A trophy and awards presentation is made upon conclusion of the match on the firing line. Commercial Row Whether youre a competitor, casual shooter or collector, Commercial Row awaits you with new and used firearms, ammunition, competition gear, parts, accessories, apparel and more. Commercial Row consists of several buildings leased as retail space by manufacturers, retail firearms stores, resellers and specialty shops during the National Matches. If youre a shooter who forgot his cleaning kit at home or looking to add to your shooting collection, chances are youll find something of interest on Commercial Row, opposite CMP Headquarters on Lawrence Road. Vist the CMP Store Be sure to stop by the CMP North Store located on base, Bldg 2500. Browse our racks of military surplus rifles, personally handle rifles and hand-pick your treasure. Our friendly store staff will be happy to help you select the rifle youve always wanted whether its to build your rare collection, own a piece of history, shoot in competition or impress your buddies at the range. If you have any questions about National Matches, please feel free to contact the CMP at info@thecmp.org or (419) 635-2141.

National Match Spectator Events

The National Rifle & Pistol Matches at Camp Perry are open to the public from July 8-Aug. 14. While shooting sports are not always easy to follow due to their individual nature, there are still plenty of opportunities for shooting fans and the general public to see and experience the color and fanfare of contemporary marksmanship. Below is a list of events that you may wish to attend. Camp Perry, home of the National Matches, is six miles west of Port Clinton on the shore of Lake Erie. Its an Ohio National Guard training site that is open, with the exception of the actual firing areas, for you to explore and learn about its history and purpose. During the National Matches, spectators are welcome to bring their spotting scopes or binoculars to the ready line behind the competitors to get a birds eye view of the matches. If you know what match youd like to watch, simply review the match program and schedule that is posted on the CMP website. Safety is the highest priority of all shooting events and clear and understandable announcements are made near the firing line throughout the matches. If ever in question, feel free to ask one of the many soldiers or range personnel for assistance and they will be glad to help. Visit In-Processing Upon Your Arrival If you need assistance in finding your way around or locating the time and place of a match or event, stop by the National Matches Welcome Center in Building 3 (center of the V-shaped arcade building at the east end of Lawrence Road). All competitors and visitors are required to check in at the Welcome Center to receive their Welcome Packet (CMP competitors will also receive their Competitor Packets). First Shot Ceremony 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 8th Each year the First Shot Ceremony kicks off the National Matches when the guest speaker fires the ceremonial opening shot on the 600yard Rodriguez Range at the conclusion of remarks. Dignitaries from the CMP, National Guard, NRA, all branches of the armed forces and government representatives will be on hand. Public viewing from bleacher seating is open to the public and encouraged. Fanfare including a color guard, a military band, military combat maneuver from the Ohio Air National Guard make for an exciting opening to the Matches. . The 2013 First Shot speaker is LTG John S. Crosby, Ret., U.S. Army, former member of the CMP Board of Directors. The First Shot Ceremony will take place on Monday, July 8 at 10:00 AM with the Military Band Concert at 9:30 AM. This event is open to the public. CMP Marksmanship Center Plan to visit the CMP Marksmanship Center while youre here. Our 80-point indoor, climate-controlled air gun range is a stateof-the-art 10-meter shooting venue thats on par with Olympic ranges around the world. Try your hand at sporter air rifle or the new National Match Air Rifle (AR15 clone). The range is open to the public and re-entry matches will be held throughout the National Matches. Its a great, low-cost way to experience competitive marksmanship. The range is normally open on Tuesday and Thursday eve-
