Four Health Checks Every Woman Should Perform
(BPT) - Women tend to spend more time taking care of their families, homes and jobs than themselves. With so much time invested in caring for others, women can overlook the importance of their own health. National Women's Health Week was recognized on May 12 to May 18, but taking care of your own health should be a year-round pursuit. Here are four health checks every woman should have, and if it's been a while (or never) since you had one, schedule a doctor's visit right away.

Annual Physical: No matter your age or relative level of health, it's important to see your family doctor at least once a year for a complete physical that includes blood pressure screening and a blood test that will check for diabetes, high cholesterol and other problems. This checkup can help your doctor spot any problems, provide you with guidance toward your weight and health goals, and give you peace of mind when everything checks out fine. Skin Check: Skin cancer rates have been rising for years - so much so that now, one in every five Americans will get skin cancer, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. It's also one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, if caught early. In addition to performing regular self-checks, it's important to have your skin thoroughly checked by a professional, too. Ask your physician to include a skin check as part of your annual physical, or schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Reproductive Health: From fertility questions and cancer screenings, to heavy periods and uterine fibroids, women can face many reproductive health issues. It's important for women of every age to monitor the health of reproductive organs, so be sure to see your gynecologist once a year. He or she can also tell you what tests you should have to monitor your health. Mental/Emotional Well-Being: Just as you take care of your own physical health and the mental health of your family members, it's important to take care of your own emotional well-being. There's nothing wrong with finding some "me time" for yourself every day. In fact, it's vital.

Pharmacist Tip of the Month!

The Battle of Gettysburg

150 years ago, in July of 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the turning point of the Civil War occurred, in the battle with the largest number of casualties in the entire war. Union General George Meade and his army put a stop to Confederate General Robert E. Lee's invasion of the north. Over the course of the three-day battle, almost 50,000 casualties were recorded, including almost 8,000 killed, 27,000 wounded and 11,000 captured/missing. Over 3,000 horses were killed as well. But only one civilian death was recorded - 20 year old Jennie Wade was killed by a stray bullet while cooking bread in her house.

Built-in Air Conditioner

Your body was created with a built-in cooling system, called sweat or if you prefer, perspiration. On television and in magazines, you will find numerous advertisements encouraging deodorant for exercise when in actuality; sweat is a vital key in a good workout. When your body heats up due to exertion, sweat is doing the job intended keeping the body cool. Therefore, do not try to squelch sweating, accept it.

Journalist Bruce Catton recorded this observation in the aftermath of the battle: "The town of Gettysburg looked as if some universal moving day had been interrupted by catastrophe." Four months later, the effects of the battle were still evident in Gettysburg, when President Lincoln dedicated the Soldier's National Cemetery, delivering his famous Gettysburg Address. 75 years later (in 1938), President Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the monument called the Eternal Light Peace Memorial at a reunion on the battlefield that attracted over 300,000 visitors.

1903: The First Tour

110 years ago, the very first Tour de France occurred. Originally, it was sponsored by the newspaper L'Auto in an effort to increase readership, which was waning. The race was to take place in six stages over 19 days, and cover almost 2,500 km (about 1,500 miles). While current day Tours cover about 3,500 km, making for a longer route, modern races are divided into 20+ stages, so the original Tour featured extraordinarily long stages, averaging 400 km (250 miles) per stage. Initially, few cyclists were interested in participating. After postponing the start of the race a month and increasing the prize money, enough cyclists signed up to make the event worthwhile. 60 cyclists started the race, with Frenchman Maurice Garin becoming the first ever Tour de France winner. The race was a success for L'Auto as well - its circulation increased from 25,000 to 65,000, ensuring that Tours would take place annually. Garin became a national hero, and with his winnings he bought a gas station, where he worked the rest of his life.

Coffee filters... who knew!

Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling. Protect China. Separate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.

July Birthday Hall of Famer: Bill Watterson July 5, 1958

July is National Hot Dog Month

This month, to celebrate the wonderful, ubiquitous hot dog, here are some fun facts about America's favorite tubular food...

The most popular hot dog topping among adults is mustard (by a huge margin), while kids prefer ketchup.

You may not know the name Bill Watterson off the top of your head, but he's likely made a direct impact on your childhood. Watterson is the artist who created arguably the most beloved comic strip of the past 30 years, Calvin and Hobbes. Bill spent much of his childhood alone, drawing and cartooning, throughout his school years in Ohio. He drew cartoons for his high school newspaper and yearbook, and continued to develop his skills at Kenyon College, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science in 1980. He did a brief stint at the Cincinnati Post as a political cartoonist, and worked several years in advertising while experimenting with different comic strip ideas before settling on the now-familiar duo of six-year-old Calvin and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. For ten years, the strip was wildly successful, earning not only the love of fans everywhere, but honors and awards, large and small, nearly every year the strip existed. In 1995, Watterson announced to the world that he had said everything he wanted to say with the strip, and decided to move on to pursue other interests. His disappearance back into personal life was eerily near-total, moving back to his hometown of Chagrin Falls, OH and out of our lives. He does not do public appearances, sign autographs or license his characters for any sort of merchandising. Other than occasionally writing the forward to comic strip collections, both his own and for others, he is completely out of the limelight. But the characters he created for us are legendary and beloved, and will continue to speak to fans, new and old, indefinitely.

In honor of the 1996 Olympics, Sara Lee Corporation created the world's longest hot dog, at 1,996 feet long.

Americans consume over 7 billion hot dogs every summer -that's 818 dogs per second, and enough to stretch from Chicago (the Hot Dog Capital of the World) to Frankfurt, Germany (where they were invented) 125 times.

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport sells more than 2 million hot dogs per year.

Marlene Dietrich said that her favorite meal was hot dogs and champagne. Hot dogs were also the favorite food of Al Capone and Cary Grant.

Babe Ruth once ate 12 hot dogs and drank eight bottles of soda between games of a double-header - and was hospitalized after game two with severe indigestion.

Cooking Tip: Use a spatula or tongs to cook your hot dogs on the grill. They can lose moisture and tasty juices when pierced by a fork.

Secrets For Living A Healthy, Wealthy & Happy Life

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome. Booker T. Washington

The Wedding: July 29, 1981 Prince Charles & Lady Diana
Nearly 750 million television viewers in 74 countries joined another 250 million on radio to experience the marriage ceremony of Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, to Lady Diana Spencer, a young English schoolteacher, daughter to the 8th Earl Spencer. Married in a grand ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral in the presence of 3,500 guests, the couple's post-ceremony procession through the streets of London drew 2 million spectators lining the route. Their first child, Prince William, was born in 1982, and their second, Prince Harry, in 1984. However, life being what it often is, the couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

Stay Safe Around Fireworks

About 47% of persons injured from fireworks are people under age 20, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Injuries are most commonly associated with firecrackers, sparklers and bottle rockets. Leave fireworks displays to trained professionals. Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. If you do choose to use fireworks yourself this July 4th, keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a fire. Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.

Migraine Headaches Driving You Crazy? Heres Help:

Migraine headaches are three times more common in women than in men. A family history of migraine is present in 70 to 80% of sufferers. Many women experience migraines related to the hormonal changes of menstruation, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, post-partum and menopause. If headaches become more frequent and intense with oralcontraceptive use, its important to inform your doctor. In some instances, a change in the type of oral-contraceptive pill will lessen or alleviate the headaches. In other instances, the pill or hormone treatment must be discontinued. Over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications are often useful in migraine management. It is possible, however, to worsen headaches with frequent medication use. Talk with your doctor about all prescription, OTC or herbal products you are taking for headache treatment. Your doctor will work with you to try to find the best strategy for headache relief and prevention. Many people find headache improvement with relaxation and other self-care techniques. Rest in a darkened room, cool compresses, massage and a nap are examples. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Keep a journal to help identify migraine triggers and patterns. If you are experiencing headaches, see your doctor for a diagnosis and to discuss treatment options that are appropriate for you. Source: University of California, Berkeley
