THERMAE: AN OLD SCIENCE FOR A MODERN MEDICINE

FEMTEC web site: www.femteconline.org

16th - 19th October 2011 Bled, SLOVENIA

PRESENTATION Thermal medicine is one of the oldest western forms of therapy and should be considered, as such, as a traditional medicine (WHO definition). The Thermae intended as an integrated set of natural resources, facilities, and services, can be the meeting point of several forms of medical culture for therapeutic and rehabilitation purposes, as well as for health preservation. Today, with the significant progress of scientific medicine, it may look pleonastic, to use a medium (water) that is apparently simple. In fact, in the era of pharmacogenomics, of metabolomics, of lipidomics, and of highly sophisticated diagnostic and surgical techniques, the role of the Thermae can look, at best, obsolete. Indeed, a more comprehensive definition of the physical and psychic well-being of people calls for the acknowledgement of deep transformations in some key words of the Welfare system. Thus health is not just treating a disease, but first and foremost promoting the well-being and development of personal skills. Thermalism should therefore be intended both in terms of therapeutic efficacy and in terms of prevention and active opposition to medicalized lifestyles, i.e. in favour of maintaining a health and well-being status (with subsequent pharmacoeconomic values). Integrated Thermal Medicine, which avails itself of the classical know-how and techniques of hydrology and medical climatology combined, wherever necessary, with traditional therapies and therapeutic techniques based on other medical principles (Traditional Chinese or Indian therapy, phytotherapy, etc.), should deal with man in his entirety and refuse to focus just on one part or organ, rather aiming at restoring both health in the diseased part and the functional balance of the whole body. Slovenia, today, with a great number of thermal springs and very well equipped thermal centres can be an excellent new arena not only for therapeutic treatments but as destination for health tourism. For that, we think that the choice of Bled for 64th FEMTEC Congress is very actually to explain the role of the ancient thermal medicine in the new society and interesting and helpful for all the specialists. Bled is renowned for being one of the most beautiful alpine resorts. It has a picture postcard image of idyllic tranquillity, where a little island with a medieval chapel sits upon a glacial lake surrounded by the unspoilt majesty of the Alps. Pr. Umberto Solimene FEMTEC General Secretary Pr. Nikolai Storozhenko FEMTEC Chairman
