This apex institution of Prayas is the first of its kind in the country. The thrust areas of this Institute are child protection and juvenile justice, education, child labour & human trafficking . It has the following units RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION This unit conducts surveys and research on issues pertaining to street and neglected children. It also maintains a database of all other organizations, national and international, working in the area of child development and rehabilitation. TRAINING This unit organizes workshops, seminars and prepares materials (both written and visual) to impart training to NGOs, educators, govt. functionaries and other social groups on various aspects of child rights and needs. This unit also coordinates the placement of students from various institutes. INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION (IEC) AND MEDIA This unit undertakes networking with the media to generate awareness and spread advocacy among various groups of people. RESOURCE UNIT This unit develops programmes to raise funds and resources through various interventions to sustain its ongoing activities. It also arranges sponsors for our children. CHILD PROTECTION UNIT The Child Protection Unit conducts survey, action research and studies on the socio-economic, psychological and legal status of the children at risk within the broader meaning of juvenile Justice system. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER (PDC) The unit implements alternate education programs for marginalized children who are at risk. The unit also undertakes training of teachers, curriculum planning and developing of user friendly teaching and learning material. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Prayas caters to more than 500 volunteers, interns, community workers and so from various Universities of India & abroad like Dublin University, University of Virginia, University of London, Chicago University, SUAS, Ireland etc. This unit is engaged in the advocacy work of gathering and disseminating ideas concerning with various UN, governmental and non- governmental education policies & programmes.

THE STORY OF PRAYAS Prayas had its inception in 1988, as an emergency relief and rehabilitation measure for thousands of children rendered homeless due to a devastating fire in one of the slum areas in north Delhi at Jahangirpuri re-settlement colony. Starting with 25 children, today Prayas caters to the needs of over 50,000 neglected, street and working children in 08 states/UTS of Delhi, Gujrat, Bihar, Assam, Haryana, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Chapters of Prayas are being established in US, UK., and Germany. The organization is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FERA) and under Section 35AC and Section 80G of the Income Tax Act. MISSION Prayas mission is to protect children's rights, to help them meet their basic needs and to expand opportunities to achieve their full potential. Guided by dreams and aspirations of thousands of neglected street and working children, we pursue our mission with both commitment and compassion because the children we serve, deserve the best. PHILOSOPHY.... Prayas believe that the basic needs and rights of children & marginalized are synonymous. Every child has needs and thereby has the right to adequate food, clothing, shelter, education, recreation, medical facilities, love and care. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES WORKING AT GRASSROOTS AND FOSTERING PARTICIPATION Prayas essentially operates at the grass-root level and our programmes are participatory and focus is on the community, building their capacity for self help and affirming the dignity and worth of all. WORKING TO BRING POLICY CHANGES Prayas' works for changes in various policies and programmes for child welfare and development with the government and institutional agencies. WORKING FOR HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT Prayas' focus is on Institutional Care and community service, child helpline, alternative education, vocational training, health, nutrition, girl's education, micro - enterprise, and emergency relief and rehabilitation. WORKING CLOSELY WITH OUR PARTNERS FOR DEVELOPMENT: Prayas' strength lies in its capacity to network with the government corporate as well as the NGOs. RIGHT TO LIVELIHOOD We encourage youth and adults in their income generation ventures by providing relevant training and by assisting them to improve the economic and social capacities needed to meet their livelihood requirements.

RIGHT TO PARTICIPATION ..... KALASRISHTI PRAYAS: Prayas, believes that in the rehabilitation process of a child in difficult circumstances, his /her cultural and social reintegration takes a priority. Kalasrishti is a vibrant platform for children living in such circumstances. GENDER MAINSTREAMING: Prayas empowers women through confidence and capacity building for their equal participation in economic activities. CHILD SPONSORSHIP PROVIDES... CARE FOR EVERY CHILD:Through sponsorship, children receive education, training in hygiene, nutrition, family planning, vocational, and life-skills. In addition children receive mid -day meals, uniforms, healthcare and recreational facilities. ACTlVITES AND PROGRAMMES NUTRITION: All children attending the AE Centres are provided nutritious meals for their healthy development. CRECHE: To provide care service to children between 1-6 years of working mothers. ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION: Prayas has been working for innovation and replication of alternate schooling to contribute to the national goal of education for the marginalized children. Prayas is catering to the educational needs of approximately 5,000 children every year through more than 225 alternative Education Centers, which adopts a multidimensional approach for the rehabilitation needy children in Delhi alone besides village in Bhuj (Gujrat) and cities and rural areas in Bihar. Prayas partners with Government of Delhi in the implementation of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and is committed to the achievement of UEE. It is a member of the Governing Body of UEE Mission Delhi, and also the nodal agency for SSA in South Delhi. Prayas is a major partner of the Department of Elementary Education and Literacy, MHRD, Govt. of India in its new project, "Community Owned Effort to Universalize Elementary Education in Urban Deprived Communities" to reach out to another 4500 children in the age group of 11-14 years through bridge and remedial education courses. Keeping the goal of SSA in mind Prayas feels privileged to offer its expertise and services to facilitate REACH India' program in strengthening the capacities of six child - centered grassroot NGOs of south district with a focus on basic education service delivery for at risk children through the Prayas model of Alternative Education. The program aims to cater nearly 4,500 vulnerable/ at-risk children over a period of three years covering the areas of Sangam Vihar, Okhla, Tughalkabad, Badarpur, Madanpur Khadar etc.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING: Prayas imparts vocational training in 23 trades including computer, candle making, dress making, hand and machine embroidery, auto repair, beauty culture and tailoring, doll making, etc. P L A C E M E N T : P raya s h a s placement facilities for its vocational students and also arranges funds for those starting their own ventures. INSTITUTIONAL CARE: Prayas runs five Shelter Homes for children in the age group of 6 - 18 years. There is a separate shelter home for girls (at Tughalakabad), for boys (at Jahangirpuri) and a children's home for boys (at Feroz Shah Kotla), Delhi Gate and night shelters for homeless. The combined capacity of these homes is 1000 children at any given point of time. CHILD PROTECTION UNIT: The project is meant to cater to the social and rehabilitative needs of girls in the age group of 6-18 years who are victims of acute forms of violence including physical abuse. Crisis Intervention Centre ensure professional investigation of such cases and its meaningful prosecution, provide financial support, medical service and counselling to help the needy ones. CHILD HEALTH: Prayas provides medical care to street and slum children. All Prayas children have access to medical facilites, including free medicine. Further, all the shelter homes have medical service and visiting Doctors. Regular medical camps are organized in different Delhi slums, where apart from medical service, information & awareness on HIV / AIDS and family planning is provided. There is also provision of referral service in case of emergency. CHILDLINE 1098: Prayas runs a free telephone helpline for children in north Delhi. Any child in distress can get immediate medical aid, shelter, counselling etc., on dialing the childline number 1098 (Toll free). Any form of child abuse and neglect can also be reported for further action. PRAYAS INSTITUTE OF ECONOMICS EMPOWERMENT (PIEE): Prayas Institute of Economics Empowerment encompasses various facets that include education (both formal and non-formal), formation of Self Help-Groups, vocational training, skill upgradation, production of marketable goods and services, development of skills in sales and marketing and creation of an infrastructure which uses research to support and strengthen all these activities. Such a unit will serve as a model that can be emulated in other areas for economic development of underprivileged community.
