Units and Conversion Factors to the International System of Units

Introduction

Measurement of a variety of mechanical, electrical and thermal properties is fundamental to characterization of materials used in industry. System International is a system of measurement that is the language for both science and industry throughout the world. System International (SI) provides a level of simplicity because all properties can be expressed in terms of basic units. In many publications, properties are reported in both Sl and English units of measurement. In these instances, the accepted format is to report Sl units first and English units second. When both unit values are reported, English units are normally enclosed in parenthesis. Table 1 lists common properties with units and corresponding symbols expressed in both English and Sl units. Conversion factors are also included to allow conversion from English units to Sl units. To use these conversion factors, simply multiply values expressed in English units by the appropriate factor to obtain values expressed in Sl units. Conversely, to convert from Sl to English units, divide the SI unit value by the conversion factor.
