9 AM 43rd Surgical Hospital Dear Alma and Dad, I am short of nurses so am working on the ward today and for the next five days. We only have six patients and I am thru with them until 10AM good chance for me to get caught up with my letters. This has been a funny week, on Tuesday the 19th we were alerted to pack up and be on the alert to move if anything went wrong at the prisoner release. We were all ready and stayed up until after midnight and when everything turned out to be orderly we were taken off the alert so unpacked and back to normal. It has been real cold here, down to 0F a couple of nights, the days are sunny and the mud thaws around noontime. I havent minded it at all. Last night was the coldest so a couple of nurses and officers gathered in the C.O.s tent (he has two stoves) wrote letters and I worked on my table cloth. I served cheese and crackers, shrimp and tried to make hot buttered rum but didnt have the ingredients. He has a tape recorder with some very nice music so we had a pleasant evening. Of course my quonset is warmer but I love the rule that all men have to be out of the nurses compound at 10PM. I have had lots of mail this week and two unexpected Xmas packages. One from Elsie who sent me a Wedgewood ash tray and cigarette dish of the coronation design; the other from Mary, a lovely gadget bag for my camera. I had just mailed a package home to you so I will probably be sending another one as I accumulate stuff, I dont want anything extra to pack when we may have to move. I am trying to get all my paper work done in advance before I go to 8th Army next Monday. Yesterday I completed the Nursing Service History for our annual report and hope today to write up a staff study I have been making. I am breaking in a new nurse to take over for me while I am relieving the 8th Army Chief Nurse. I plan on coming back here next Tuesday when we celebrate the Anniversary with a cocktail party and dance. Dord and Nonie both write that you are having real winter weather at home. I hope Dad isnt trying to shovel snow, seems to me the Steele children should be big enough now to want to earn a little money. Love, Edna
