The rounds will now begin from the start of the chain. The chain is at the back
of the body and will become the tail once the body is complete.

Cut the yarn and use the yarn tail to close the remaining stitches.
Add the hackle feathers to the body. Holding the body right-side up, insert the
hook going from the bottom of the body to the top and attach bronze yarn
(pic 5).
Ch 4. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, 1 sc, 2 hcd, skip 1 stitch on the
body, slst into the next stitch on the body (pics 6-8).
Repeat 23 more times for a total of 24 hackle feathers. The “wrong side” of the
stitches should be facing out once the hackle feathers are complete. Cut the
yarn and fasten off invisibly (pic 9).

COMB (MAKE 1)
Using red yarn. The comb is created by attaching three parts together. Fasten
off for the first two parts after round 6 but do not cut the yarn on the third part
(pic 10). Cut a piece of red yarn and set aside to use for sewing before
beginning.

The three comb parts should now all be attached, with two gaps left by the
skipped stitches. Sew the gaps closed using the set-aside yarn before continuing
the comb (pics 15-16).

Close the wing by folding the wing together. Ch 1. Working into two stitches at
once, close the wing by crocheting 10 sc across (pic 17). Do not stuff the wings.

TAIL FEATHERS (MAKE 6)


Using blue yarn, ch 17. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook.

FEET (MAKE 2)
Using yellow yarn. The feet are created by attaching three toes together. Fasten
off for the first two toes after round 5 but do not cut the yarn on the third toe

ASSEMBLY
Place the beak on the front of the body centered between the eyes on rounds
10-15 and sew in place using the long yarn tail (pic 24). Place the comb on the
top of the head going down the back and sew in place using the long yarn tail
(pics 25-27). Stuffing is not necessary for the comb or beak unless desired.

Add cheek highlights under the eyes using


spare pink yarn and sewing between rounds 28

Sew the wattle parts under the beak using the
long yarn tails. 29

Sew the comb curl to the front of the comb


using the long yarn tail. 30

Place the wings on either side of the body below the hackle feathers and sew in
place along round 20 of the body using the long yarn tails.

Sew the tail feathers to the tail of the body (pic 33). The feathers should be
sewn in two rows of three feathers, with a top row of three feathers sewn
between rounds 20-21 of the body and a bottom row of three feathers sewn
between rounds 21-22 of the body directly below the top row (pics 34-35). Sew
the feathers so that the feathers curl away from the body.
