GTA: ‘Good
Times Ahead’

It’s fitting that, a few days
after UConn spirals into chaos,
the newest iteration of the
“Grand Theft Auto” series will
be available in stores.
“Grand Theft Auto IV” (GTA
IV) will be released on April
29 for the Playstation 3 and the
Xbox 360, though a pirated ver-
sion has already surfaced on the
Internet. The game will be avail-
able in regular and collector’s
edition versions. The standard
edition will cost $60, while the
$90 special edition will come in
a metal safety-deposit box and
include special packaging, an
art book, a soundtrack featuring
select songs from the game, a
Rockstar keychain and a duf-
fel bag. The Xbox 360 version
will feature exclusive episodic
downloadable content set to
be released in the fall, though
what that content is hasn’t been
detailed – though it’s been
rumored to be a whole other
island or district for players to
explore. Sony has also said that
the Playstation 3 version will
feature some sort of download-
able content, though even less
is known about this. As long as
it’s not horse armor, that would
be fine.
Players take control of
Eastern European Niko Bellic,
who comes to Liberty City – the
same location featured in GTA
III – with hopes of pursuing
the American dream. Modeled
after New York, the game will
feature a total of four districts
but will, overall, be smaller than
“GTA: San Andreas.” The four
districts include Broker, Bohan,
Dukes, and Algonquin, all based
on the boroughs of Brooklyn,
Bronx, Queens and Manhattan,
respectively.
Without side quests, it took
Rob Taylor of Xbox World 360
magazine 25 hours to complete
the game. Rockstar has claimed
that the game lasts 100 hours
total with all the bells and whis-
tles. The single-player mode will
remain true to GTA tradition,
with Bellic performing odd jobs
for people who hire him, begin-
ning with his cousin Roman.
Multiplayer is where GTA IV
will distinguish itself from pre-
vious installments. There are a
total of nine modes, all of them
online-multiplayer compatible.
Players can enhance their skills
up to level 10. Most games can
be played with up to 16 people.
Announced modes include Race,
GTA Race, Team Deathmatch,

No Richness On Stage At

People may go to the theater
to escape reality. But in the
Connecticut Repertory Theater’s
The Threepenny Opera, reality,
in that Brechtian twist, is at the
theater with you, and refuses to
let you leave.
The musical, which runs
tonight through May 3 at
Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre, is
set in a messy, grease-stained,
mildly anachronistic Victorian
London. There’s nothing ele-
gant or refined about this play,
though, a fact that’s clear from
the moment the cast stumbles
onstage for the opening “Mack
the Knife.”
“The Threepenny Opera” tells
the story of notorious criminal
Macheath (Michael Hanson), a
womanizing ruffian who seems
to have finally fallen for the
vacuous Polly Peachum (Heddy
Lahmann). The two are to be
married shortly, which is of
course unbearable to Polly’s
parents, Mr. J. J. Peachum
(Christopher Hirsh) and his wife
Celia (Lauretta Pope). Enraged,
Mr. Peachum, master of all the
beggars in the city, plans to
stop the wedding by any means
necessary, up to and including
capital punishment. Matters are
complicated when Macheath
turns out to have the Chief of
Police Tiger Brown (Michael
Daly) in his pocket. A multitude
of arrests, escapes, prostitutes,
love affairs and unlikely twists
later, the play reaches its happy
conclusion – but who’s really
happy at the end?
The acting is occasionally
notable, but it’s also occasion-
ally bad, and the two don’t
really manage to balance each
other out. Hanson feels sub-
dued and wooden as Macheath,
a role which suggests dangerous
smiles and deadly style. As Mrs.
Peachum, Pope happily snaps
herself back and forth, double-
taking and mugging furiously,
but she feels more slapstick
than characterful. Hirsh, on the
other hand, makes a fantastic
Mr. Peachum – he adds an hon-
est bit of charm to the lumbering
gait and snarl of his character.
And though she has a relative-
ly minor role, Hillary Parker
is enjoyable as Jenny, with a
stunned, doe-like demeanor and
a pitiably awkward posture.

whatever your preference),
funneling, dizzy-bat and
keg races with thousands of
UConn students with blue
wristbands and their guests
makes for one interesting
weekend. What can make
Spring Weekend even bet-
ter than seemingly endless
crowds of people and loads
of alcohol topped off with a
(debatably) amazing concert?
Being dressed the right way
can ensure a comfortable and
safe weekend in at least one
aspect, and here are some tips
to “spring” into the weekend
in style.
Leave Your Heels At Home.
Spring Weekend is no time
to worry about elongating
your legs. Though your new
pair of wedged J.Crew espa-
drilles are beautiful, there is
no reason to parade them
around campus just to get
them ruined. Thousands of
college students have the
opportunity to step on your
$118 investment, and no pic-
ture showcasing the heels is
worth that amount of money.
“I don’t understand why
anyone would think it’s a
good idea to wear heels out
during spring weekend,” said
Ashley Vrabely, a 2nd-semes-
ter exploratory major. “Heels
give you blisters. It’s one less
thing to worry about.”
However, forget the
aesthetics and simply
consider the practi-
cality of heels
on a weekend
such as this.
