A COMPARISON OF SOST AND HVDC TRANSIENT SlMLILATlON ALGORITHMS %houri Zangeneh-Baktiar Shoulnie-Ahhss

The SOST algorithm thought roputed to bc efficient. use fewer approximations and provides automatic selection of optimal integration steps, as a result the SOST responses are very consistcnt. T.bk I . E0mp.d.o" b m w " sosr ."d .".b"", T.b* I. s.mp,,ng Fun"*"

Simulator with optimal step time (SOST) is a hybrid solution of large HVDCRTVAC systems, Detailed simulation of HVDC convener behavior has been modified to include automatic selection of optimal integration steps, frequency-dependent effects of AC system AC systcm phasc and magnitudc dynamics of voltagc (Panicularly weak AC systcms), rwt-matching Control assessment and temporary over voltage consequences and techniqucs(far eliminates the h'uncation cmr) . SOST, via graphical intcrfaccs, providcs fast and accuralc information of elechomechanical and electromagnetic-transients behavior of Large HVDCMVAC system(provides highly efficient and accurate time domain rcgardlcss of time stcp used). Three conditions m u s t be met for a rigomw approach to problem of verification of a computer algorithm, ie I . Presenting all the relevant information needed to detect any deviations and the instanca of their occurrence. 2. Selling up identical test system conditions in each model. 3. Comparing the propased algorithm with one or More fundamentally different models. A more realistic comparison, in terms of conditions 1 to 3 above is the use of three or more altcmativc and fundamentally diffcrcnt computcr solutions. Three basically different approaches are currently used in HVDC/HVAC transient simulation, ie the electromagnetic transient program (EMTDC, EMTP) and the hybrid algorithm (SOST, TSE') and state variable technique (TCS'). If the response o f the three methods (SOST, TSE,TCS) to various disturbances can be made to agree, it will be reasonable to accept the validity of both. If they do not agree, at least one of them will not meet the criterion and without additional information it will be Difficult to reach a positive conclusion as to the value of either. First, a three-phase fault at the invcTter-converter terminal to validate the hybrid technique by showing that the response is practically identical lo that of TSE programs was Simulated.(Fig. I). Second, Line-to-ground fault at the inverter-converter terminal exemplifies the differences between the two types of solution(Fig 2). Finally , Comparison of the optimal step time algorithm with analytical response (existences ones) shows the method is complement of others(Table 1,2).
