The International: eSports Hits the Grand Stage

This past weekend, from August 7-11, I spent almost all of my time glued to the couch. I was watching sports but it wasnt your typical sport. I was watching The International, a $2.8 million tournament for the video game Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2). This weekend was the main event, so the final eight teams slugged it out over grueling 10-12-hour days of competitive gaming in Seattle. The winning team was crowned (and walked away with $1.4 million) and the tournament was over. Now Im trying to figure out what to do with my spare time now that I dont have game after game of DotA 2 to watch. Thats a weird space for me because I mostly hate eSports. The players can be jerks, commentators are often unprofessional and I cant keep up with the fast play of high-level gamers. But The International, Valve and the eSports community have come together and put on one of the most professional and well-designed tournaments in eSports history. One of the challenges in video game tournaments is getting people to watch other people play. Video games are meant to be played! It goes against the very nature of gaming. But games like DotA 2 and Starcraft 2 can be incredibly exciting to watch when professionals are doing things average players only dream of. DotA 2 is a multiplayer game that features 100+ heroes who duke it out on the same map, trying to destroy the opposing teams towers and their throne, the main building. If the throne goes down, then the game is over and the team who destroyed it is the winner. There are three lanes the heroes can charge down to fight and each team will be accompanied by waves of non-player characters called creeps. Neutral creeps can be found in the jungle as well. These creeps charge down the lane and fight other creeps or heroes, whomever they run into first. When creeps die, they give money and experience, which heroes can use to level up and buy items, making the hero stronger. Thats the core experience of DotA 2. The exciting part is when opposing heroes run into each other. Each hero has four different abilities and watching five-on-five battles as the colorful abilities go off is incredibly exciting. This is where the pros do their best work, dodging spells, throwing out counter abilities and putting their hero in the perfect position to do the most damage. It requires quick reflexes and incredible foresight to play DotA 2 at the professional level. The International put the right tools in place to make it exciting for the fans to watch. The game is free (only cosmetic items cost money) and anyone can watch the tournament for free as well in the game client. This game client allows fans to pick their favorite announcer (usually one announcer per language of English, Chinese, Russian and others). Picking the announcer puts the camera in the announcers control and spectators can watch and listen to them call the game. Either that, or Spectators can control the camera themselves or follow a players camera so they can watch how they make incredible plays. Valve gives the player plenty of agency, allowing them to make the decisions on how they wish to watch the game something not possible in the TV worlds of basketball and football. On top of an excellent spectating system, The International was one of the most professional gaming tournaments Ive watched. Gamers can be a bit weird and DotA 2 players are no exception. Having your commentators and reporters as gamers can sometimes lead to awkward moments or weird bouts of humor. While that did happen at The International, it was relatively rare. The analysis was top-notch, the personalities were great and the interviews (save for a few) were informative. There also was zero display of DotA 2s nasty side. The DotA community (dating back to the old Warcraft 3 mod) gets a bad rap for having players who are HUGE jerks. It is a game that takes 30-45 minutes to play, and one player can ruin the experience for everyone by either being a troll or having a bad game. Players get frustrated easily and use colorful language often. It is definitely a game kids should not play online. At the tournament, though, the professional players were excellent. They lost and won with grace and displayed great sportsmanship. Valves tournament is the next step in eSports. It gave fans plenty of choices on how they wanted to watch the games, the prize pool created excitement and the tournament organizers made sure players kept it clean. The focus was on the game and the big plays. Thats the way it should be. I cant wait until next year.

If youve been paying attention, and Im certain that you have, then you know that over the summer Ive conducted a series of interviews with local songwriters. Ive asked obtuse philosophical questions about Art and Life. Ive tried to stay out of the way as much as possible, quoting them at length and allowing their own words to do the talking because I believe that philosophical questions and answers are a kind of Rorschach test for the soul. But sometimes its necessary to turn the mirror on oneself, because me knowing about you means you knowing about me and vice versa. So this week Im turning the mirror on myself because you need to know who it is thats asking the questions, or else what good are the questions anyway? And, believe me, the questions are good. When I was growing up, I was what you would probably call a strange child. (Thats okay with me because I would probably have called you a strange child as well.) I had one odd personality trait that my father in particular could never quite understand. It began around the fourth grade when I was becoming increasingly aware of my superior humanoid intelligence. It went something akin to this: Whatever I liked best, I always used last. For example, if I had a plate of food and on that food were the items a) macaroni and cheese, b) meatloaf, c) steamed broccoli and d) corn on the cob, I would eat those items in the following order: first the corn on the cob (which I liked the least); second, the steamed broccoli; third, the macaroni and cheese; and lastly, the meatloaf (which I liked the most). You may disagree with me about the merits of steamed broccoli versus that of corn on the cob, but that is neither here nor there. Whats important is the rationale. The idea was that I wanted to save the best for last so that I could enjoy it the most. I wanted to go out on a bang. I didnt want to spoil the joys of the meatloaf by returning to the tedium of the corn on the cob (not to mention the discomfort caused when stuck between the teeth). Another manifestation of this philosophy is best described through the shirt model. Par exemple, if I had four shirts, I would wear the shirt I liked the most the least, I would wear the shirt I liked the second-most the most, I would wear the shirt I liked the least the second-most, and the shirt I liked third-most I would wear the third-most. Why would I do this? The rationale was that I wanted the favorite shirt to be something special, and so it would remain untouched in my closet. In one instance, I never actually wore the shirt that I loved the most. My advice to the next generation is this: dont make the same mistakes Ive made. Wear your favorite shirt. Wear it every day. Or else it will be your second-favorite shirt that comes to define you. Let it get dirty. But let your favorite shirt be the shirt that defines you.

L.A.s Latest Arrives Every Friday

Dainty Hooligan on Campus Corner is a ninja. I never noticed it until I was pretendjogging. Slowing from a pathetic stumble to a crawl, I got blindsided by an aqua Angie dress. Trendy-stealthy it is. After living in London, Sydney and other fashion-forward cities, I was shocked at what Dainty stocks. This is style you just dont see in these parts, and most items are under $40. Think mellow glam, ultra feminine, flirty. Right now they have the soft pinks, mints and lavenders that are blanketing the runways. Chiffon and lace steal the show, and did I mention mega-affordable pricing? The owner, Jessica Issler, born and raised in California, still resides in Anaheim. Her mother, however, lives in Tulsa. During a mom visit, Jessica decided she wanted to open a store smack dab in Oklahoma. Hence came the birth of Dainty Hooligan in Norman. There are also locations in Newport Beach, Tulsa and Austin, and of course you can go online at daintyhooligan.com to find fashion treasures not available in stores. Dainty Hooligan supplies the latest and greatest because Jessica is a genius shopper born with a wicked fashion eye. She knows whats getting ready to trend. She literally drives to L.A. from Anaheim every Monday and Tuesday, goes shopping for the Norman store, then boxes up the goodies, which arrive on Campus Corner every Friday morning. (Keep that in mind ladies Friday.) Its straight from the L.A. market to Norman. It hasnt even been unwrapped. Thats why the prices are so low. Since Jessica lives there, shes not worried about upcharging. She does everything herself, says Angela, the store manager. Angela can call Jessica at the drop of a hat and rattle off a list of what the Norman store needs crimson items for football season or long autumn skirts. This isnt cookie-cutter stuff. This is the owner going personal shopping in L.A. for Normanites. Ive seen similar designs around the metro but not at similar pricing: Dresses - rarely over $39.50 Belts - $12-$18 Earrings - $5-$9 Nail polish - NYX $2.50 (Wahhhh?) Bandeaus - $5 High-Waisted Shorts - $30 Its not only the prices that make the difference. The clothes are high quality. They have that rich feel and secure fit that you know will last. Jessica flew me out to L.A. to give me a lesson on superior chiffon, threading and fabriccare techniques. Shes all about quality. There are always those stores that dont care. This isnt one of them. Jessica is passionate, says Angela. The staff is ultra friendly and helpful ta boot. Turns out, they love their job. Its obvious because Angela keeps pausing during our interview to chat with a customer, handing her various accessories to make a canary maxi dress pop. Everyone here is so amazing. Theyre not just workers. They truly like and respect each other. We seem like a little family, says Angela. A dainty family. Dainty Hooligan is the perfect place to buy that wow factor date night outfit. Its as close as you can get to a designer squinting over a sewing machine in your bedroom, biting off the final thread with his/her teeth and handing you a silky, cutting-edge creation. If you want to look hot and not break the bank, hit it up.

You Can Do It. Put Your Back Into It.

Last weekend at Lake Texoma, three friends and I did a late night boating expedition to Highport Bar. Theyve opened a new dock bar below Highport called The Island Bar. Its literally on the dock, so it rocks with the waves and the pounding of the dancers. It can get pretty pumping. As my crew got in the mix, we realized what appeared to be a bangin dance party was actually a hybrid retirement home celebration and random 21st b-day kickoff. Every type was there. Every age was present and everyone was dancing. I was born wearing a nice, tight pair of dancing pants. If I hear music, I have about three minutes before some major throwback moves bust out, so of course I got right in the mix. Mid-pelvic thrust, my friend decided it was his turn to get some. His engine was revved hard. A few minutes deep into a showcase of both his dance moves, he stumbled up to me and slurred, I just got hit on by four separate women due to my tight skills. He wasnt exaggerating. I witnessed their advances. Men, heres a little secret: WOMEN LOVE A GUY WHO DANCES! That doesnt mean you can be spastically offbeat and well still want to have your baby. You just need a bit of swag, or at least fake the swag by swaying inadvertently and using the good ol eye contact/smile combo to let us know youre not just on the dance floor trying to avoid passing out. Will Smith as Hitch in the movie of the same name said it best: Hitch - If she asks you to dance, you cant say no. Kevin James - Thats the one thing Im not worried about. Then Kevin proceeds to show off some ridic moves to Ushers Yeah. Hitch stares at him blankly. About three seconds in, Hitch cuts the music. Hitch Dont you ever do that again, you hear me? This is where you live. Right here [starts a small side-to-side step, head bobbin softly to the beat]. You live right here. This is home. Elbows, six inches from the waist, 90-degree angle. Dont you bite your lip! No need to make the pizza. They have food there. Women relate dancing to sex. Even a great dancer can lose it with one of these [does an MC Hammer spin move]. I dont know if everyone relates dancing to sex, but girls definitely want a man with dance enthusiasm. Its sexy/hot/confident. Maybe it does display rhythm and smoothness wed like to see put into play elsewhere. Its just hot when a guy is willing to cut loose on the dance floor. I simply cant stress enough what dancing will do for a mans dating life. If you want to pick up a chick, dont stand on the wall. Break out, son! Strive to pull a hammy or something. Slide. Pop. Kickball change. Freak. Whatevs. I dont care if youre doing the Clogged Ketchup Bottle, Dealing Cards, or tying an imaginary string to your hip that you pull with the beat. Some hottie will eventually smile at you, and when she does, electric slide in her direction.
