One of the most popular, new fashion fabrics is the bonded fabric. “Bonded” is literally a two-faced fabric—one layer is permanently attached to another, usually a lining like tricot. It is a huge time saver for those who sew their own fash- ions because it eliminates lining. This treatment makes fabrics that normally are hard to handle quite easy to work with. It is easy to cut and sew and makes the shape you so carefully sew into a fashion last for life of garment! Just about everything you can imagine is bonded. Knits, both classics and novelties in wool; cot- ton or synthetics; suiting and dress flannels; wool homespuns; dress crepes of all types; even metallics, laces and silks. Bonded cottons have been quite successful too. Like other new fabrics, there are a few things home designers should know before handling fabrics of this type. Choose a style with simple detailing, as it is unsuitable for very soft draping and gathered fullness. Bonding adds body that is best Suited to clean, crisp lines . . . just the sort of fashion look that is so important today. Since bonded fabries cannot be stretched diagonally for straighten- ing, square off ends with a ruler and cut. Follow lengthwise grain for lengthwise fold. Use tailor tacks or chalk to transfer pattern markings to fabric. Very sharp shears are essential. Fold bonded knits for cut ting with wrong sides together and ibs treated as true lengthwise grain. Fold woven bonded fabrics with right sides together for cutting. Mercerized, silk or synthetic thread is satisfactory to stitch knit materials—usually 12 stitches to the (Continued on Page 16) 4960—Fashion mixers for almost any occasion —parfect for school, office, travel dining ia ‘or out. In constructing a garment, slash and press open darts to eliminate bulkiness; cut inside collar seams, facings, ete, to uneven widths (called blending) to eliminate bulk. Since bonded fabrics will not ravel, no special seam finishes are needed. They may need stay stitch- in on crosswise seams to hold shape while assembling, and sometimes require permanent seam staying with woven seam binding. Length- wise grain of most bonded fabrics is very stable and does not require special treatment. Buttonholes do not present any problems. Work them on a zig-zag machine or with a buttonhole attachment, but use a woven stay or underlay between garment and facing. Bound or corded buttonholes should be made through a woven stay in a bonded knit or crepe. The cost of materials is about 5c per pot and I sell each pot at the grocery store for 30c. Mrs, William R. Wells Kitchen Key Racks I make hanging fish key racks. To make, draw a fish shape, about 12 inches from head to tail, on a piece of plywood. Cut out’ shape and paint gray. When dry, paint fins, tail and other features in black and white.
