SOCIOCULTURAL WORKCAMP OF COY (LORCA). 2.009

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKCAMP OR THE TASK TO FULFILL:

The aim of this workcamp is to energize the population of Coy in social and
cultural terms through the development of a project designed for all kinds of
population: children, young people, women and older people.

Volunteers will prepare, carry out and assess a series of activities and
performances aimed at the different sectors of population in order to have a
positive effect on the inhabitants of Coy throughout the summer holidays.

EXTRA OR FREE-TIME ACTIVITIES:

At the same time, a programme of activities will be drawn up so as to improve


the relationship of the participants along with their knowledge of Murcia Region,
Lorca and its surroundings.
- Programme of characteristic activities of entertainment, leisure and
free time.
- Two excursions: one to the Murcian Coast and the other to a concert
of the “Espirelia Festival” in the Castle of Lorca.

DATES:

First turn: From July 15th to July 30th. The workcamp begins the first day at
lunch time and ends the last one after breakfast.
Second turn: From August 1st to August 15th. The workcamp begins the first
day at lunch time and ends the last one after breakfast.

PARTICIPANTS:

Age: Participants must be aged between 18 and 26.


No. of people: 24. 12 of them will belong to the International Volunteer Service.
Documents to take: On arrival, all participants must give the camp director a
photocopy of their health insurance card or something similar.

LOCATION AND EMPLACEMENT OF THE CAMP:

Coy is the northernmost deputation of the large municipality of Lorca. It is about


36 km away from downtown Lorca and 97 from Murcia. It has an estimated
population of 512 inhabitants and it is placed by a former Neolithic village from
the so-called “Algarian Culture” known as “Cerro de las Viñas”. It is an area with
a long-standing tradition for handicraft, mainly in the textile sector and the
production of high-quality wines.

HOW TO GET THERE:

By car: For those vehicles driving down the A-7 carriageway, coming from
Murcia: Exit 595 (Lorca-Norte, Caravaca). Then, take the local road (CC-3211)
towards Caravaca. Later, take the “Avilés-Coy” exit through the C-12 road.
Finally, go straight on until Coy.

For those vehicles driving down the A-7 carriageway, coming from Andalusia:
Exit 595 (Lorca-Centro, Caravaca) and then follow the route above.

Buses leave from Lorca Bus Station every day at 12:00.

By train: Take the Murcia-Aguilas regional train and get off in Lorca. RENFE

MEETING POINT:

Participants will be welcomed at the entrance of the bus station of Lorca (which
is by the train station) the very first day and will be driven to Coy at 13:00 and
20:00. Participants can also go to the camp on their own throughout the first
day.

ACCOMODATION: Participants will stay in the “Casa Grande” youth hostel, in


Coy. They will also be provided with their bed linen (sheets, blankets and
pillows).

BATHING AND SWIMMING:

Coy has an artificial beach, called “La Encantada Beach”, which takes its water
from a nearby spring. Its measurements are 40 m long by 15 m wide. Its depth
varies between 0m and 1.70m.

THINGS TO TAKE AND ADVISABLE EQUIPMENT: Casual and summer


clothes, comfortable footwear, a coat, a hat or a cap, swimming costume/trunks,
sunglasses and sun cream.

LANGUAGES: English and Spanish.

BEHAVIOUR AND INTERNAL RULES OF PROCEDURES:

All volunteers must commit themselves to:


- Work selflessly on schedule for the labour project of the camp, five
days a week
- Collaborate with the development of the entertainment activities
programme and take part in it.
- Contribute to the general organisation of the camp and its daily
chores: cleaning, cooking, administration, etc.
- Respect the different beliefs, ideologies and personal differences
among the different participants of the camp.
- Stay in the camp for the scheduled time.
- Respect the typical internal and coexistence rules of procedures of
every camp, such as: accepting the indications from the people in
charge of the activities, keeping to the timetable, and not using private
vehicles.
