A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. When a pendulum is displaced sideways from its resting equilibrium position, it is subject to a restoring force due to gravity that will accelerate it back toward the equilibrium position. In this experiment, Galileos experiment on a simple pendulum in the 16th century was used. The pendulum was measured with its angle and length where it was placed. The gathered data was used to compute for the period of the pendulum and its gravity was compared to the standard value by computing for the percentage error. Therefore, pendulum could be precise in terms of the number of trials but never accurate to the standard value because of different errors such as the physical error and the inaccuracy of the materials used.

Answers to guide questions: 1) Using MSEXCEL, Graph table and display Table 3. Length vs. Square of Time. What relationship exists between the length of a pendulum and the square of its period?

2) What are the factors affecting the period of a simple pendulum? The factors that affect the period of a pendulum include the point of suspension and the length. The equilibrium position and amplitude is also important. 3) What must you do to the length of a simple pendulum so that its period is doubled? To make the period of a simple pendulum doubled, we must increase the length four times.

4) Determine the acceleration due to gravity in a location where a simple pendulum is 150.0 cm long makes 100 vibrations in 246s. L = 150.0 cm f = 100 vibrations T = 246 sec. G = 42 L/ T2 = 42(150.0 cm)/(246s)2 = .09785 cm/s2 = 9.79 m/s2 Conclusion: As the data suggests, since our results yielded a small percentage error, we were able to accurately observe the pendulum and determine the values needed to be measured while properly performing the given procedures to acquire the desired results.
