The Tribe makes opportunities to share ideas with our neighbors all year long. Were you at our parties? If not, dont worry-- therell be plenty more to come! Community builder Project #1:
Why:

Once a year is simply not enough time to connect.

Community builder Project #2:
Art competition

Mobile Conversation wall

Community builder Project #3:

Little Libraries

What:

To CONNECT with one another & learn about our neighbors hopes and dreams.

How it Works:

Our Youth Council (YC) Members (ranging in age from 12-17) were inspired by a talk given by TEDfellow Candy Chang. Artist-turned community activist, Ms.Chang transformed a dilapidated building in New Orleans into an ongoing conversation in the community. Her Before I Die wall has sparked a world-wide movement. We built our own wall, but took it one step further. YC designed a rolling wall that travels with us from town to town, scratching OCs surface just enough to see the deeper side of people. As YC travels with our wall, we invite new friends to join us in bringing focus to our hopes and dreams & create NEW conversations. An added bonus: we learn about the stories behind the stories.

An invitation to Mind the Generational and Achievement Gap. To connect young artists with mentors in the arts community through various workshops and instructional time.

What:

To CONNECT & INSPIRE our community through sharing books locally & within the global TED community.

How it Worked:

How it Works:

We issued a Call for Art from students 18 or younger to create multi-media art interpreting of our theme Mind the Gap. Mentors were invited to share knowledge, provide creative methodogies & skills to the youth & aid developing an art submission; youth were able to channel their creative energy & tap into years of experience from community mentors. Judges were invited to select the finalists in 8 categories: 2-D Art, 3-D Art, Technology, Music, Photography, Creative Writing, Videography.

YC collects books from the community & attaches special bookplate stickers to the book. Original book donors are asked to personalize the book by writing their first name, age & birth city. Theyre also asked to write why they chose the book to connect with the next reader. Readers are invited to use these books as a global communication platform & encouraged to write in the margins. The book is also labeled with a tracking number, so wherever the book travels around the world, people can log online to continue the conversation: A perfect marriage of an analog connection in a digital world.

The Net Effect:

Culminating in an interacive Art Exhibit, judges met the artists behind the art, sharing meaningful connections as they validated our youths contributions.
