UPCOMING PITCHING PROBABLES

LONG BALL SPOILS NIGHT, TWICE--The Royals were victimized by the home run on two occasions last night, as Justin Smoak hammered a 3-run blast here in Safeco Field, while just a couple hours earlier a little over 2,400 miles away, Jason Giambi put a damper on the night with a walk-off home run in Cleveland...all told, Kansas City suffered an ill-timed 4-0 loss to the Mariners, after the Indians pulled victory from the jaws of defeat at Progressive Field for a 5-4 decision over the White Sox and pushing KCs post-season hopes to the brink, now trailing by 4 games with 5 to play...Bruce Chen was tagged with the loss, working 5.0 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 runs, the key blow the fifth inning shot by Smoak...the Kansas City offense had a pair of first inning hits around a double play ball, the only time the Royals had more than one baserunner on board in an inning all night.

SET ALARMS TOMORROW--Kansas Citys final road trip of 2013 will conclude with a tidy 1,730 mile trip to Chicago tonight and a sunrise arrival in the Windy City to be followed approximately 12 hours later with the first pitch of a 4-game series with the White Sox...the Royals are just 7-8 vs. the ChiSox this year, going 4-2 in U.S. Cellular Field while scuffling to a 3-6 ledger in Kauffman Stadium...the series calls for 7:10 starts tomorrow and Friday, 6:10 on Saturday and then a 1:10 season finale on Sunday. BEST PEN IN FRANCHISE HISTORY--The Kansas City bullpen enters the final 5 games in possession of an American League low 2.54 ERA trailing only Atlanta in the Majors (2.45)...if the current ERA doesnt take a dramatic hit, it would be the best relief mark in Kansas City history, with the strike-shortened 1981 pen posting a 2.80 mark...the previous best full-season ERA by the KC pen was 2.92 in 1976...if the current mark holds up, it would be the second lowest by an A.L. pen since 1982, with only Oaklands 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better. ANOTHER RUBBER GAME--For the sixth straight series and 19th time this year, it will take the third game of a set to decide the winner, with KC going 4-1 in its last 5 rubber games...overall the Royals are 11-7 in series deciding tilts, going 4-5 on the road and 7-2 in Kauffman Stadium. DWYER DEBUTS--The Most Valuable Player of the AAA Championship Game, Chris Dwyer, made his big league debut last with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief...the 25year old fourth round pick from the 2009 draft allowed hits to the first two Mariners he faced before fanning two in a row and escaping a jam in his first inning of work... the southpaw was a 10-game winner for the PCL Champion Omaha Storm Chasers and a PCL All-Star...hes the 384th different player to pitch for KC, 108th southpaw. HOLLAND MATCHES TEAM MARK--It wasnt his easiest rescue, but effective nonetheless as Greg Holland worked a scoreless 12th inning here on Monday night after walking the first two hitters to record his 45th save of the year and tying the club record set in 1983 by Dan Quisenberry and matched 10 years later by Jeff Montgomery...Greg has now made good on 38 of his last 39 attempts dating back to May 30...since that date, Holly has five more saves than any other reliever in the Majors, with Craig Kimbrel next with 33, while the A.L. leader in that span is Jim Johnson with 31...a first-time All-Star in 2013, Holland has allowed just 4 earned runs since May 30, spanning 49.0 innings for a 0.73 ERA, while recording 73 strikeouts, a 13.4 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio in that span, which is also the best in the Majors in that span, while limiting the opposition to a .139 average. STAFF #1 WITH FIVE TO GO--With five games left on the 2013 docket, Kansas City has maintained its #1 status in the American League ERA race with a 3.45 mark, easily topping second-place Oakland at 3.58...should KC manage to keep the season mark at 3.45 or better, it would be the clubs best season ERA since a 3.44 in 1978. ADDING TO THE WIN TOTAL--With 83 wins the Royals have matched their most recent winning season of a decade ago when the 2003 squad finished 83-79...another victory would give Kansas City its highest win total since going 84-78 in 1993...the Royals are 39-37 away from The K, the most road wins since recording 43 in 2003.
