Holiday Bazaar
December 7 is this year's date for the UMW Christmas Bazaar. As we enter jam making season, consider making an extra jar or two for the Christmas Bazaar. Preserves are always a hit at the bazaar. Not a jam maker? Perhaps you can knit, embroider, crochet or woodwork an item for the bazaar while you are sitting outside in this wonderful weather. And remember to keep an eye out for those "treasures" you might find in an attic or closet that would look great on our re-sale table.
The school year is back in full session and here come the tests. I want to thank everyone for helping our college students feel welcome in the church. I have enjoyed getting to know the new students as well as connecting again with the returning students.. Hopefully you have enjoyed this experience as well. I have had a lot of fun getting to know the college students through meeting with them one on one, spark events, and the meals provided by the church. I also want to say a special thank you to everyone who helped out with these. The church would not be able to have this ministry without your help! Thank you! I am in the middle of planning our Passion trip in January. This trip will include the Passion conference along with a mission trip. This will not be a construction mission trip, but will focus on serving in soup kitchens and other ministries designed to help the underprivileged. We will once again be having fundraisers for this so watch for more details on the trip, along with up coming fundraisers. Including the famous pancake prelude! Thank you for all your generous support in making Spark ministry possible!

Wow we have some crazy busy students. I now remember what it was like to be in junior high again. Sport practices starting, marching band in the early morning hours ( thankfully I did not have this), not to mention the homework.

Needless to say this fall has looked a little different for Merge than I expected. Due to this, Merge is going to meet on Wednesday night for the 6th through 12th graders at 6:30 to 7:30 pm. We will also be doing some discipleship things and fun events on some weekends. Merge 45 is our ministry to 4th and 5th graders. We will be picking up the students from school at 3:30 and meeting until 4:30. This will be starting on Oct. 2nd. Please let Mindy know if your child is interested so you can receive more information. It is such a blessing to work with these students and not only see them excel in sports, band, school but also see them become disciples of Christ and learn what it means to live out their faith!
Fall is time when the next years habits are formed, so this year why not develop the habit of being in a small group? I have heard so many stories about how small groups have changed lives in the church for the better! You read about some of them last month, now what are you waiting for? You will not regret being in a small group, in fact the time you spend there just may become your favorite time of the week. So why not make some time in your crammed schedule and invest in yourself? Your children, husband, wife, friends will all thank you for it as they notice the difference in you! This fall we have small groups being offered on Marriage, Grace, and Living Healthy Lifestyles. Do you have another topic that interests you but is not offered? Talk to me as there are so many resources out there, I bet we can find one that you and others will love! Thank you to everyone who donated school supplies for our classrooms. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Often children come to school without the basics necessary to function in a classroom. The supplies you gave us will be put to use to help many children this year. Bless you all! Sally and Scott Woodworth Thank you to all who shared in our loss with expressions of sympathy. We greatly appreciated it. Only God can help ease our loss of dear Cheri. Ken and Karen Anderson-Carp A Look Ahead: All Saints Day November 3rd we will be celebrating All Saints Day during both services of worship. We will be reading names and lighting candles for our members, friends, and relatives of members who have passed away in the past year (since last All Saints Day). If you would like a candle reserved for a loved one who passed away this past year, please give Jennifer your name and the name of your loved one. There will be additional candles available for others to light in memory of those who have in previous years gone on to the church triumphant.

MISSION COMMITTEE
Dear Church Family: Thank you for your participation in our school supplies mission. We filled the supply lists for six children in our adopted families program. Second, we gave several donations to Scott and Sally Woodworth's classrooms. Also, we were able to donate some supplies to the Platteville School District for students who may come to school without their supplies. The Mission Committee
The Platteville Coats for Kids Project is collecting warm new and gently used kid-sized (baby to teens) coats. Please place any warm winter coats you have to donate in the box in the lobby. Coats that need cleaning will be taken to the Platteville Cleaners by Mission Committee members. Thank you for supporting this project that helps families in Southwest Wisconsin.
Habitat for Humanity of Grant Co. is building a house in Platteville. October 19th has been designated as a workday for volunteers from the Platteville United Methodist Church. Carpentry and building skills are not required. The site construction supervisor will provide training and instruction on the tasks for the day. The actual work we will be doing will depend upon what has been completed in the weeks prior to October 19th. The basement forms are in place and the basement walls should be completed soon. We could be building walls, putting on sheathing, installing doors and windows, etc. As it gets closer to our work date, more specific information about what we will be doing will be sent to those who have signed up to help. A sign up sheet is available in the narthex. Come for the morning, afternoon, or both. Lunch will be provided.

Dear Women of PUMC, I have always believed in miracles, but sometimes a miracle needs a little coaxing to happen. The PUMC United Methodist Women group is a miracle coaxer in that its mission to help make the impossible, possible. Its activities support projects in our church, help our youth, and have a wide outreach to those in need. I am hoping that every woman in our church will consider two things. First, become more active in UMW and support it with your time, talents and monetary contributions. We do not collect dues from our members, but encourage all members to make give a yearly offering to make our work can continue. UMW meets on the first Tuesday of every month, Sept.-May at 1:30. Our meetings are brief with a short program on an issue such as homelessness. Second, if you are NOT a member of UMW, please consider joining. The money collected by our group goes to mission work done locally and beyond our community. Dont hesitate to contact a member of UMW to see what the organization is about and how you can play a role in it. One of the largest tasks undertaken by UMW is the Christmas Bazaar which takes place this year on Saturday, Dec. 7. People in the community rate our Christmas bazaar as one of the best, with great crafts and home baked items to buy and a wonderful lunch. Many hands make light work is not just a saying when it applies to the bazaar. I would hope, as chair of the bazaar, that you would consider giving at least one hour of your time to help us at the bazaar on either the day of the bazaar or on Fridays set up day. I can guarantee that you will enjoy working with the other members of UMW and it is a great chance to meet other people from our community. Sign-up sheets will be appearing in November and we hope that you join us. Please consider working with this outstanding organization! Rosemary Anderson

Shiny Gods
Our stewardship emphasis this year will be based on Shiny Gods, a book by Michael Slaughter. We will be talking about things like our relationship with money, Work & Debt, John Wesleys principles on money, and investing in Gods Kingdom. There are two sides to our giving at church. On one hand, we give because we want to support the ministry of the church that we love. On the other hand, we need to consider what Jesus said about our relationship with God and our relationship with money, as well as how we are using the gifts that God has given to us. During the four weeks we focus on Shiny Gods we will be considering both aspects.

REDEEMER
Our very own music group Redeemer performed for Platteville United Methodist Church during its annual Dairy Days worship service Sunday morning, September 8. Over 150 people were in attendance.
Mark your calendars for Barely Seniors. Barely Seniors will meet on the second Thursday of each month Sept through May in the Fellowship Hall with the potluck at noon.
PUMC ToyMake:
On Saturday, October 12th and 19th from 9am to 4pm will be work sessions for making the wooden toys. We will be working at the Wood Technology Lab on the UWP campus. The door to the lab can be accessed from the parking lot on the west side of Russell Hall. Warner's navy blue Chevy pickup with topper and ladder racks will be parked near the door.
These are 3 of the toys we make. We also make a doll bed, semi-truck and barn.
If you can only come for one hour and not the entire work session, your help is still welcomed. Bring your safety glasses or goggles if you have them. We will order out for pizza at noon, so bring $5. Donations for buying the wood are needed. Mark your check or giving envelop with "ToyMake". Contact Warner Smidt (348-5017 home, 608-331-7624 cell, or warner.smidt@gmail.com) for more info.

Our church will be hosting a presentation of current ideas for generous gifting to our church. We will discuss planned giving, and look especially close at the current IRS rule that allows up to a $100,000 tax-free IRA distribution for charitable gifts for people over the age of 70 . This rule is to be phased out on December 31, so now is the time to take advantage of it. Featured presenters are from the Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation, part of the nationwide United Methodist Foundations which together manage nearly $3 billion for churches and their members. There is no charge, and refreshments will be served. Attend one or both presentations. If you have questions about whether or not this could be helpful for you, please contact MarkThacher at 330-1160. Call Jennifer at 348-9508 for reservations.
